Disk 2 of the Painter 6 set contained no Painter resources. It was a Painter
Tour and Digital Art Show and also included the trial version of Bryce 4...

"The Painter Tour provides you with a brief overview of the Corel Painter 6
software and some of its new features. It was designed to help you get started
thinking about the creative possibilities of using Painter."

Disk 1 contains all the extra resources and was underfilled, so it should only
take one for P7.

I'll let Jinny Brown fill you in on the procedure for upgrading Painter 6. The
patched 6.1 version seems to be reasonably stable.

Dunno ;-) Mine came on 2 (in words: two) CDs, namely Application Files
and Content Files.

Even with an upgrade, it would make little sense to use the old
ressources, there are so many new ones.

Yes, it is. It's much more stable than the 6 was, IMO.

To back up painter 6 (or 6.1) files make a copy of all files starting
Painter (ie Painter.pap, Painter.set....) in the root of the painter
directory. I put mine in a subdirectory called 'defaults'.

It's a good idea to back these up as soon as you install painter, as
any of them can become corrupt if painter crashes, rendering painter
unstartable.

Personally I never add new resources to any of the painter default
libraries, as you could loose what you've added. and eveytime I've
added a new grad to the default grads library, the whole library seems
to be emptied :-(

Erwin,

My responses are inserted below...

Painter 7 comes with two CDs:

Painter 7 CD 1 is the application CD and also contains the Default
Content Files, Painter 7 Default Brush Library, and Version 4, Version
5, and Version 6 Default Brush Libraries.

Painter 7 C D2 contains Acrobat Reader 5.0, QuickTime, and extras:
Brushes, Color Profiles, Fonts, Gradients, Image Hose Nozzles, Lighting,
Paper Textures, Patterns, Pen Patterns, Photos, Selections, and Weaves.

Painter 7 is a full program, though you can use many of the resources
from Painter 6 and earlier versions (with the notable exception of
Painter 6 and earlier Water Color brushes since the Painter 7 Water
Color technology is all new and older version Water Color brushes won't
work the same in Painter 7).

Like any version of Painter, Painter 7 is more stable on some systems
than others. I find it pretty stable and think that most people do once
they get things set up right. With the addition of the Painter 7 Update,
released recently, several bugs are now fixed as well.

The latest patch, as Doug said, is the 6.1 patch. I'll paste the
complete instructions for Uninstalling and reinstalling Painter 6,
adding the 6.1 patch, and making a backup of the default Painter 6 files
at the end of this message (though they can be installed independantly
from the Painter 6 application CD, if necessary).

I don't know of a Painter 6 file with the extension .PAB. There's not
one in my Painter 6 folders. You may be thinking of the Painter.SET file
which does every so often become corrupted.
______________________________________________________________

To Uninstall Painter 6, reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch, and
create a backup copy of the Painter 6 default files:

1. Move any files you created to a folder outside of the main Painter
folders.

2. Uninstall Painter 6.

3. Manually delete any remaining Painter 6 installed folders and files.

4. Reboot.

5. Install Painter 6, then immediately install the Painter 6.1 patch.

6. Reboot.

7. Before launching Painter even one time, create a new folder outside
of the Painter 6 folders and name it something like "Painter 6 Default
Files Backup".

8. Go to the main Painter 6 folder and copy all of the default Painter 6
files.

9. Go to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder and paste the
copied default Painter 6 files into it.

Now you have a backup set of Painter 6 default files so when one of them
becomes corrupted, which happens on occasion, **with Painter closed** go
to the "Painter 6 Default Files Backup" folder, make a copy of the
appropriate file, then go to the main Painter 6 folder and paste the
copied file into it. This will save your having to Uninstall and
reinstall Painter 6 and the 6.1 patch again if a file becomes
corrupted... and save frustration, too!

Have fun! :o)

Isn't it much easier (and disk space saving...) to simply delete &
re-install Painter? Or just do copy the whole program folder onto a
removable media? Okay, it depends on the system you use, some of them
make it easy, others not ;-)

What i do _not_ understand: where in you posting was the answer to mine?

I was replying to Erwin's backup question

I use a threaded newsreader, I dont think you are, so it may look like
the reply is to the wrong person.
