Hello,

I have been trying to do a nice tutorial and
there are some parts that I don't understand
very well so I decided ask you experts because
my experience with Painter is not enough yet to
understand all this : )

This is the link for the tutorial...
http://www.arnistotle.com/painter.htm

In this tutorial the artist start using the
watercolors, He does first the background and
then he continues with the figure, the background
was the easy part and I didn't had problems
applying the dark color but if you follow the
illustrations in the picture no3 He apply some
brighter flesh tones to His drawing with watercolors
also meanwhile the pencils continue in the
background, I was trying to do the same but I can't
get the watercolors brighter.

Unfortunately the artist doesn't explain wich
composite method is using in the Watercolor
layer in order to get the Watercolors brighter
or wich kind of settings must be selected to do
that.

May someone explain me how can I do the watercolors
brighter over the dark background?

The second part of the tutorial is only with regular
brushes, I don't have problems with that.

I have Painter v6 and v7

Thanks for your time,
Ladronn

Ladronn,

You won't be able to paint light over dark using Painter 7 Water Color
Layers. Painter 7 Water Color Layers have to be in Gel mode to work as
intended, which makes the color darker when painted above other colors
than white.

It seems the artist is using Painter 6 as he says he prefers it and also
says he's using the Simple Water brush variant which doesn't exist in
Painter 7.

I'm not sure how he managed to get lighter colors using the Simple Water
variant over darker colors, unless he lifted the dark image to a Layer,
set the Composite Method to Soft Light, for instance, then painted
lighter colors on the Canvas, then lifted the Canvas to a Layer set the
Composite Method to Gel and returned the original dark Layer to Default.
I'm not even sure if that would work.

Since there's nothing about the author's finished image that indicates
it's been done using Water Colors, a much easier method would be to
paint with the Dry Media's Artists Pastel Chalk variant. In the Brush
Controls palette's General section, change the Subcategory to Soft
Cover, and lower the brush Opacity to maybe 20% or lower. Working on a
Layer, you have more freedom because if you don't like your results, you
can edit the Visibility Mask, or delete the Layer and begin again.
Working on multiple Layers, you can begin with dark and build to light
and have the option to lower any of the Layers' Opacity or use a
Composite Method to get the effect right.

Happy Holidays! :o)

Dear Jinny,

Sorry for reply to you until now, I have been with very
little time to enter to the Painter NewsGroup.

I wanted to thank you for your help, you are extremely
kind and your patience is weighted in gold,

I don't understand why Painter has removed this function, seems
to me like many people really liked because I have heard from
some other artist who are very sad with the change, many of my
friends are not happy with the idea of Upgrade to v.7

I like the new Painter7 but in my case I didn't knew very much
about Version 6 until now with this watercolor stuff and now
I can see the why some people feel sad.

I really would like to see in Painter some way to paint with
kind of opaque Watercolors and some new tools to ease the
edition of the work.

Thanks for let me know about the Water Brush Variant, I really
don't know yet very much of this application.

I don't understand very all the things you said, I still don't
have many experience, I will follow your tips and I'll do some
experiments.

Unfortunately the author doesn't explain very well his method
wich I think is not very good, from my point of view all the
tutorials must be always very clear.

I wrote a letter to him too but he doesn't have responded yet,
I will try again,

Happy Holidays to you too,

Best,

Ladronn,

Thanks for your nice message! :o)

The Painter 7 Water Color technology is all new and apparently the old
Water Color technology had to be left out.

You might try using the Tinting brushes that were introduced with the
Painter 7 Update.

These brush variants work on both the Canvas and on Default (regular)
Layers and lighter colors can be painted over darker colors.

For blending, you can use the Liquid category's Just Add Water variant
or Grainy Water variant. Grainy Water picks up Paper texture, so choose
a Paper first that will give you the texture you want. If the texture is
too strong, in the Art Materials palette's Paper section, lower the
Contrast and you can also adjust the Paper scale if it's too large. In
addition, in the Brush Controls palette's General section (or in the
Controls:Brush palette) you can lower brush Opacity to blend with more
control.

Have fun, and do a lot of experimenting on a copy of your image, or in a
new image opened just for this purpose, before working on your "real"
image.
