Why can't I do this? The book and help (Painter 4.0, running on NT
3.51) say to shift-click on the source. OK, I get a crosshair. Then
start cloning on the destination. But now I'm not cloning. The best I
can ever get for a source is the upper-left corner.

Any ideas?

Because something is being done not quite right or because some little
thing is not being done.

You got me to thinking, so I had a try. Opened an image. Chose Artist
Pastel Chalk. Pressed shift to get the crosshairs. Clicked. And then
started painting.

I was not surprised when I got big ugly black lines in the middle of
Washu's face and not the blue sky that I had indicated with the clone
source. Why? My chosen brush was still the Artist Pastel and I had not
told it to be doing any sort of cloning. Quick changing my Methods to
Soft Cover Cloning and all was well, I was up there, cloning with the
best of them.

So, my first question is - Are you using a cloning brush? You can chose
either one of the premade cloning brushes in the brush drawer, or you
can just (on the extended brushes palette) chose a cloning method.

Painter will let you set the cloning source, even if you are not
cloning. This may cause you to be misled into thinking that you are now
cloning.

I don't think I have a second question. If this does not solve your
problem, maybe somebody else understands you dilema better than I, or
please respond with excruciating detail so that I may try to duplicate
your problem.
