A few things to try... some of them won't apply unless you have a tablet
and stylus. Those comments are written based on Wacom tablets but I'd
think they apply to any tablet and stylus.

I don't have Painter 4 on my system anymore but try this, if it's
available.. and I think it is:
Edit > Preferences > Brush Tracking
Paint a wavy stroke on the scratch pad using your normal pressure, then
click the OK button. That resets your pen pressure.
_________________________
Close Painter and reopen it. As I recall, in Painter 4, that resets all
of your brush variants to their default state.
If not, one by one, restore any brush variants you've used since just
before this problem occurred to their default state (it would be best to
restore all of the brush variants if you have the time and patience):
Brushes palette's Variant menu > Restore Default Variant
_________________________
As a general rule, after working in Painter for a while, shut it down
and reopen it. If you've been working for long time and Painter begins
to behave strangely, shut it down and reboot your computer, then open
Painter and see if things are better.

Clear out temp files and browser cache frequently as they can build up
and slow down your system's performance. This can mean several times a
day if you're connected to the Internet for much time during the day.

Run Defrag and ScanDisk at least once a week.
_________________________
Keep your tablet several inches away from your monitor. If it's too
close it can cause the pen to act up.
_________________________
Check to make sure your tablet is set to Pen Mode, not Mouse Mode.

If you have a Wacom tablet, check with Wacom to see if you need the
latest driver for your model.

I'm sure I've forgotten something, but maybe this will give you some
ideas and hopefully help to get things working again.. and keep them
working smoothly.

Have you called the manufacturer of your tablet? That's what I'd do at
this point.. and probably earlier.
While you're thinking about that suggestion, how about doing a complete
Uninstall of Painter 4?
1. Move any files you created to another folder outside of the Painter 4
folders.
2. (For Windows. I don't know the equivalent for Mac): Use Start >
Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs to Uninstall Painter 4.
3. Manually delete any remaining Painter 4 folders and files.
4. Reboot.
5. Install Painter 4 and immediately, before launching Painter 4,
install any patches.
6. Reboot.
7. Launch Painter 4 with your fingers crossed. <g>
The Painter 4.03 patch is available for download at:
ftp://ftp.corel.com/pub/Painter/4
Be sure to read the P403 readme.txt file. It doesn't say to Uninstall
Painter 4 but it does say that the interface needs to be returned to the
factory default so Uninstalling and reinstalling should take care of
that. Also, it says the patch is only for Painter 4.0 and says to check
the splash screen before installing the patch.
I hope you find the solution soon. It must be driving you crazy not to
be able to use Painter. I know there are worse things in life, but not
many. <g>

You might want to get the latest drivers for your tablet and video
card as well.

That's right - no mark in freehand mode (with ANY brush) - if i change to
straight
line - all is well!

well it was the new graphic tablet! uninstalled it and Painter goes like a
bomb now!! What a waste of money that was! I thought all my prayers would be
answered with the tablet - not so! Maybe they will take it back!
Thank you anyway for all your help - I really appreciated the advice.

What make of tablet have you bought?
I know that with the Wacom ones, Painter will only work if the tablet is set
to "Pen Mode", not "Mouse Mode" (in the Wacom tablet options)
Just a thought that may be the root cause of your problem! (Fingers
crossed!)
kind wishes,
Christine
