I'm doing a w/c and picking up the colors from the original
underneath. The colors are too intense and do not even to be the same
tone, but darker. Is it me or Painter?

Greg,

Painter 7 Water Color Layers are set to Gel Composite Method and that
makes colors look darker no matter which brush variant is used.

Also, if you choose a color with black in it, (see the Art Materials
palette's Colors section Hue/Saturation/Value triangle and note where
the small circle is), it may paint a stroke that looks more black than
it looks in the Hue/Saturation/Value triangle.

Try choosing colors that have no black (along the top edge of the
Hue/Saturation/Value triangle, and experiment by adjusting Opacity
lower. If you need more saturated color, paint again on another Layer to
build up color gradually.

It might save you time to pick colors from your original image, do test
brush strokes, adjust the color until it matches, then save those colors
in a custom color set to use in your final painting. Be sure to test
with the Water Color variants you'll be using in the painting.

Try adjusting is the current Paper's Contrast and Brightness sliders,
too, and see if that helps.

Why, are they trying to make us crazy? What if you change gel setting.

So are you saying that I have to modify every color I pick of the
original just to get it to look like the original?

Don't know how to do that yet.

I don't know how to control the paper either, and now because of some
earlier things you said, I have to use 3 proggys to paint 1 picture,
PSP, P6, P7.
Thank You

No, I don't think they're trying to make us crazy. They tried to give us
what we asked for.. that is.. Water Color brushes that, as much as
possible, give the visual effect of traditional watercolors.

The quickest way to see at least one reason why the Water Color Layer is
set to Gel Composite Method is to paint on on two Water Color Layers,
using different colors, then change the top Water Color Layer to Default
Composite Method.

It might also help to read John Derry's Visual Guide for Painter 7 Water
Colors. If you don't already have this document, you can download it in
PDF format from my site at:

No, I'm not saying that. I suggest testing colors so you'll begin to
know how they work and be able to make better choices.

Read the Painter 7 User Guide, Chapter 5 Applying Art Materials, the
section named "Using Color Sets", and its sub-section named "Creating
Color Sets". It's quite easy and you can also make one from an existing
image with about three clicks.

Again, read John Derry's Visual Guide for Painter 7 Water Colors and
also read the Painter 7 User Guide, Chapter 16 Using Media Layers, the
section named "The Water Color Layer" and its sub-section named
"Applying Paper Texture".

I don't know what I said that causes you to need three programs. I think
you just need to understand it takes a while to learn Painter and not
expect it to be fast.

Take a bit at a time and read what is suggested when you ask questions.
It'll help you learn the program faster and eventually you'll begin to
have more fun with less frustration.

Good luck,
