Here is an op-ed from the foremost expert on wildfires, Dr. Stephen
Pyne. He spells out the reality of our western forests, and is very
convincing in his desire to restore forests that continue to be at
risk to catastrophic wildfire. Dr. Pyne is not only a respected
scientist, talking about his specialty but, his talent for writing is
quite apparent.

Be sure to read the ignorant comments, as well. Clearly, some
Americans continue to believe that wildfires are "natural and
beneficial", despite the destruction of Mexican spotted owl habitat
and old growth pines. Alas, some groups are trying to say that
submerchantable thinning has reduced fire damages. Those reports are
unreliable, as no one is being allowed into the fire area, as yet.

Here is an commentary about another article regarding the Wallow Fire.
Plans were being drawn up to do more thinning and fuels work before
this fire erupted. There are also people who embrace this huge fire,
and have decided to block more future management by blaming the past.
