Dinner with the Hoares
|
| |
Today, Ian and Jacquie Hoare arrived in Christchurch fresh from a trip to Thailand and accepted our offer of a room for the night. To celebrate, I made a paella Valenciana (or as close to it as I could come) and we opened a few local wines:
NV Quartz Reef "Methode Traditionelle" (Central Otago)... more »

2006 Denis Mortet Gevrey Chambertin
|
| |
Opened at dinner last night with pork chops a bottle of 2006 Denis
Mortet Gevrey Chambertin (Village). Nice ruby red color, very tight
at first but soon opened up showing some red berry, cherry and a touch
of earthy muishroom. Nice medium weight, good concentration for a
Village wine. Well balanced witha nice bright acidity. No... more »

With lamb chops the 2001 Reserve de la Comtesse. Really in a nice
place now, classic Pauillac with cassis and lead pencil, not a lot of
complexity here but nice claret. B+/B
With lemon sole I opened the 2000 Ch. Montelena Chardonnay, which
unfortunately showed quite a bit of oxidation, too bad because there... more »

Grand Cru Burgundies
|
| |
Notes from an interesting dinner tasting of Grand Cru Burgundies.
1999 Delamotte Brut Champagne – young, lots of spritz, good acidity,
clean and tasty, too young to have developed any secondary interest
buy promising.
2000 Henri Boillot Corton Charlemagne – the two whites were very
different wine, each excellent in their way. This one had some sulfur... more »

Craig’s turn to host SOBER, rather than drag us to Brooklyn he
arranged to host at Franco’s loft in Chelsea. Mark, Paige, and I were
on the same train, and decided to share a cab. Next time I’ll pay
attention- as we were zooming down Park South cabdriver turned,
deciding the smart thing at rush hour was to try and go south on 7th... more »

TN: ESJ wins in New World Grenache night
|
| |
So when my friend Dave sent that theme for our local (not very serious) group this month was New World Grenache (at least 45% Grenache), I immediately replied all with "what did I ever do to you that makes you hate me so much?" I was joking, but barely. I didn't think I had anything that qualified, and had no real ideas for shopping- Greneche is not my favorite variety, and most that I drink are from the Rhone. However, the day was saved when Steve Edmunds informed me he thought the 2001 Rocks and Gravel was about 46% Grenache. Squeaking by! Turns out other people were less concerned with sticking by rules than I was.... more »
