With tonight's dinner of broiled lamb, Jean entreated me to find a good lamb wine. What better choice with lamb than Bordeaux? So, off to find a good example in the cellar. One ulterior motive was Jean's recent observation that her recent Bordeaux experiences had failed to excite her. I decided to open something that would be better than just "all... more »

'04 Bronzinelle
|
| |
With last night's light dinner of butternut squash soup and bread, Jean asked for a hearty red wine, so I came back from the cellar with: 2004 Ch. St. Martin de la Garrigue "Bronzinelle" Coteaux de Languedoc nose: brambly blackberry fruit verging on blackberry liqueur, a touch of earthiness palate: medium-full body, smooth tannins, balanced acidity... more »

If most wine was meant to be drunk while eating...
|
| |
...Then doesn't that follow that most wines were probably developed to go well with local specialty dishes/ingredients? But in wine competitions, musn't a wine be able to stand alone? Doesn't that present a contradiction?

'02 Ridge Geyserville turnaround
|
| |
We fortuitously took advantage of the Indian Summer we are currently enjoying by spending a weekend at a local State Park which, apart from spectacular scenic beauty, is bereft of fine dining options. So, to supplement meals at the Inn, we brought along a bottle of: 2002 Ridge Geyserville (84% Zin; 14% Carignan; 2% Petite Sirah)... more »

Modern styled with some apparent oak, but not as heavily extracted as some de Grazia wines. Red berries, leather, a bit of vanilla. Medium bodied, moderately tannic. Over the... more »

On his recent visit to France Santiago was kind enough to bring a 6 pack of Spanish wines for us to try. (He performed the same service for the Baudry clan, I'll be interested in finding out their impressions!) Since we essentially never see Spanish wine here, this is a great chance to broaden horizons.... more »

A pretty nice assortment over several days 2008 Selbach Oster "Anrecht" Zeltinger Himmelreich Spatlese Over three nights. First night, some spritz, clean acids, good fruit, I liked. But I liked even more on night two, the fruit (peaches, yellow plums, lime) resting on a real backbone of acidity, good... more »

November 2009 Lunch Notes
|
| |
November lunch notes: 2002 Larrivet Haut Brion – lots of colour, given the age. Decent nose, decent flavours, and medium length. Pleasant but not outstanding. Nice to get a decent white Bordeaux. 1991 Ch. Musar – the white Musar is Serge Hochar’s favourite even over his red. Lots of colour, an intense and interesting nose with some... more »
