Description: All about wine, for oeneophiles.

TN: Riesling, Riesling, Chardonnay
Sunday night I made split pea soup and choucroute (strange combo, but I was trying to work with what was in fridge, which included some great kraut, a hambone, etc). Cooking wine was NV (listed as 2007 on site of store where I bought, and lot # ends with 07, but no actual vintage I can see) Pacific Rim Winemakers Dry Riesling (America). Does... more »

TN: French wines at a church (mostly Burgs & Loire), plus a Cotturi
Every year my friend Alex and brother-in-law Cal put together a fundraiser for their church's social action programs (which includes contributions towards my group). Cal arranges a musical program around a theme, Alex makes a meal to complement (so when they did Viennese music, there was schweinelendche and sachertorte). This year musical... more »

Botrytis Vignoles from Leelanau County Mi
My wife and i purchased this wine from a winery in Leelanau county Michigan (we are from Michigan). We were told it would be good with a dessert. Since the word dessert is so broad, we would like to know what type of dessert would go best with it. We would be serving this at Thanksgiving. I would... more »

Does anyone else ever order from the Woot style places?
Certainly since recession/meltdown/malaise there have been some great deals from regular retailers (Zachys, Grape the Wine Company, Pops spring to mind). But there have also been some new "stores" established, specializing in the One Item at a Time closeout deal. Woot wine was first, but I've never bought from them.... more »

Huet, Gardine, Beychevelle, San Giorgio, Panascal
Blind tasting notes: 2000 Huet Vouvray Le Mont – this dry Vouvray was sadly lacking. Colour a bit darker than I’d have expected, sweetish nose, but simply lacked fruit on palate, ending after a gap with acidity. Not oxidized but somehow damaged and with a very short finish. 1996 Faustino I Rioja Gran Riserva – bright rim, leather and plum nose... more »

Backlog notes (CRB Pif & Rotgipfler)
Over the last few nights, we've opened a couple of interesting bottles that I've neglected to write up. Two nights ago, with a dinner of roast chicken, I opened: 2008 Clos Roche Blanche "Cuvée Pif" nose: red fruits, leafy palate: tight, young, moderate tannins, red fruit Very tight right now, this shows great promise for the next few years.... more »

Rinaldini Lambrusco
After such sage advice from this group, I come home tonight to find that Jean has made lasagne Bolognese and chilled the Rinaldini Lambrusco Grasparossa "Vecchio Moro." Not being one to put her off any inspiration, I assented to the choice and we opened it nose: initially grapey, turning more savory in an herbal vein with time... more »

TN: 2 of my favorite producers (Chevillon and Ridge)
No wine Wednesday, as I trekked to Long Island for a speech. But Thursday night we had "Pir Vilayat's dinner" (steamed salmon with chard and onions) and barley, with the 2005 Chevillon Bourgogne. I like Pinot and salmon, but for this dish I usually prefer white, but the red was handy! Really nice showing, I was afraid it would be... more »

2007 Joseph Voillot
I was at a tasting yesterday of 2007 Joseph Voillot wines. Voillot is based in Volnay but has holdings in Pommard also. No mistaking the connection between the wines as the style was consistant across the board. Voillot makes a fairly small amount of these wines from a total of about 30 acres consisting of 10 1er red burgundies from... more »
