I have the opportunity to buy some 1970 vintage port: Fonseca and/or
Taylor Fladgate.

1. Any opinions about the relative merits of one or the other for
drinking now?
2. What is the likelihood that one or either of them will still
be good in another 20 years?

Thanks

The 70 Taylors is very good now. Whether it will stand another 20 years
would depend on where it's been stored and where it will be in the future.
Haven't tasted the Fonseca for a while though the 63 will live forever

Toby's note from www.finewinediary.com in June 2000

Taylor 1970 Bags of sweet, fruit-pastel (blackberry/raspberry) fruit.
Youthful (we were guessing 85), has everything, already lovely, will be
great! ***(**) [out of five stars - will be five stars with time, three
stars for drinking now]

My note from 1997

Fonseca 1970 Still very youthful, and fairly closed. Clearly classy, but
patience is needed. {Didn't score it at the time, but I remember it as
superb - ***(**) as with the Taylor's perhaps.

Both will last ages if well stored - I like Fonseca style so I'd go for that
(or better still some of each to compare over the years). Both great wines.

Best wishes
