THE owners of Edinburgh's best-known vegetarian restaurant have been fined
£7,500 after inspectors found filthy and unhygienic conditions in the firm's
bakery.

The family behind Henderson's Salad Table, whose motto is "Eat better, live
better", pleaded guilty to four charges of breaching food safety laws.

A sheriff condemned the breaches, which included the presence of pigeons,
rodent droppings, dirt on trays and mouldy fruit. The firm was fined £2,500
for similar breaches at the bakery in August last year.

During an inspection last May, officers found dirty floors and walls, as
well as milk past its use-by date at the bakery, on the Stewartfield
industrial estate.

Prosecutor Neil Allan told Edinburgh Sheriff Court that trays and bread pans
were filthy and there was no hot water in the washbasin. Rodent droppings
were found on food shelves and in food containers next to baking
ingredients, including flour, and a box of tomatoes had become misshapen and
mouldy.

There were loaves and rolls stored in trays on the floor, where they were
contaminated, while milk in the refrigerator, past its use-by date, was
stored alongside other food.

"However, none of these factors seemed to put the pigeons off," Mr Allan
said.

The bakery was closed following the inspection and cleaned until it was
ready to re-open a few days later. Staff have also been retrained in health
and safety practices.

Councillor Brian Fallon, the executive member for the environment at
Edinburgh City Council, said: "These were not minor blips, but a premise
with no regard for hygiene and a serious threat to the safety and health of
customers."

Sheriff Douglas Allan was shown a series of photographs highlighting the
health hazard. He said: "The evidence does not suggest an isolated matter
which could have slipped over a matter of a day or so."

None of the four partners in the firm, Nicholas, Oliver and Peter Henderson
and Catherine Home, was available for comment yesterday, but a spokesman
said: "This case relates to an incident that occurred on 11 May last year
where Henderson's Bakery was requested to undertake certain health
improvements by the Environmental Health department of the City of Edinburgh
Council.

"Immediate action was taken by the owners, including retraining of all staff
in all health and safety practices.

"The bakery has since operated with a substantially increased level of
supervision, and other additional improvements have subsequently been made."

Hendersons is really crap. The portions are small, the food is bland and
they put grated cheese on everything unless you firmly ask them not to.

I only went there once, but afterwards I got to know someone who used to
work there who told me that when packets of cheese, soya 'meat' slices etc.
go out of date in the shop, they are taken downstairs and used in the cafe,
yuk!

If anyone on here wants to have a good meal in Edinburgh on the cheap,
Susie's Wholefood Diner is the place to go.

If you have money to burn, Bann's is the best.

Ditto on those recommendations (Susie's is hippie heaven!), but there is also
a great balti place down in gorgie and a very good non-veggie restaurnt that
does interesting food for vegans called Mothers on Leonard st across from
arthur's seat.

I never ate at Hendersons 'cause the locals all told me it sucked.
