395 to 138 (2nd or 3rd stoplight on the road). Personally I don't think
it's bad road, but I live in the high desert, so I don't expect much. Take
water and check your spare before you leave, there isn't much between 395
and Palmdale.

actually in pretty good shape. I take it pretty regularly (well, 4-5 times
a year). I live where the 14 and 395 intersect, so Lancaster and
Victorville are the 2 larger towns for this area. Sometimes I have to do
both and just do the triangle: 14/138/395.

miles from the summit. Yeah, I know about LA traffic, I try to avoid it as
well. Once you get on 395, it should be smooth sailing from there, there
are a few hills, but they are just that. On 138, it's relatively flat, but
be sure to follow the signs to Palmdale, the other route takes you out to
the forest (kinda interesting but a bit out of your way, but comes out just
a few miles south of Palmdale). If you come in on Palmdale Blvd, you are
close to Skunkworks (All military aircraft geeks can tell you about this
place) which is where the new JSF was developed.
