Does anyone here have any recipes made with Sotol? Sotol is a spirit
(like a premium tequila is the one I was given) made from a plant
similar but larger than blue agave, and comes from the Chihuahua
district. I enjoy sipping it with a premium cigar, and was interested in
seeing if others here have had any experience with it, or used it an a
recipe?

Regards

The Sotol grows in West Texas (border areas) also. The long stem is used
for walking sticks, and apparently it used to make a pretty good weapon.
But, I've never seen any recipes with Sotol. I've never tasted it. Can you
describe the taste?

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the response. The Sotol that I have, is Sotol Reposado (Hacienda De
Chihuahua). It is a refined and aged spirit. It comes from the plant Agavacea,
which I have only seen in pictures.

It's taste is similar to most premium oak aged tequilas, but it has a very
subtle unique nuance which I can best describe as pleasantly grassy and dry.

From what I read, the native Indians of the Chihuahua district, would make a
drink (more like a diluted wine) they called Sotol, and with the tequila boom,
someone decided to distill this drink, and age it in oak.

I really enjoy it, and the bottle is beautiful.

Regards,

Hades

Thanks for the info, Hades. BTW I checked a San Antonio Distributor's list
(wholesale liquor) and Sotol was not listed. I'll have to see what I find
in a future trip to the border.

You won't find this in places that don't carry premium stuff. Over here in NJ,
(NY Metro) most liquor stores have it--with the exception of those that look at
you in awe when you ask them if they carry Samuel Adams beer, while a big Coors
Lite neon flashes in the background.
