I was about 15 when I had my first Arby's Chicken Cordon Blue sandwich. I

Dammit, Steve, if you had any type of brain at all you would know that Fast
Food is OFFT-TOPIC at that group, and that is why I don't post there,
because fast-food is my main area of expertise. I only read there
occaisionally to get advice and to see what your up to over there, and
sometimes compulsiveness is stronger then my common sense and I end up
replying to your non-sense there.
However I WILL take your advice and try the Arby's sandwich tomorow. Is
there a particular side item and soft drink you would recomend to go with
it?
Peace,
Jerry
It's been a few years since the last time I had the chicken cordon bleu
sandwich, but I remember really liking it. Back then, they only had a
breaded chicken patty option, but from their website I can see that they now
have a grilled chicken breast, too. Go for the breaded one, if you like
fried chicken breasts.
For sides, I'd personally get a salad because the sandwich doesn't have any
extras on it. It's just chicken, ham, cheese and some sort of sauce on a
sesame seed bun. If you're not in the mood for a salad (like, if you're
eating in your car a salad just isn't a good option) they have mozzarella
sticks or curly fries. You might want to try those.
Anyway, if you go to Arby's and get one or these sandwiches, please give us
a report!
kili
Poppers! Arby's can't screw those up!

There blows your giant ego, yet again. I DIDN'T say that I love you.

No, it's not, but there still is a special "art" of pairing appropriate
fast foods together. Ever wonder why some restaruants only carry specific
items or beverages? It's because they go WELL with the food.

Unfortunetly, I didn't go to Arby's today. I didn't have time to try

WRONG. Fries go amazingly well with burgers, (and cola), which is why
every fast-food place serves them with the burgers.

They don't go well with burgers. When Was the last time you said, Gee, I'd

Wrong on two counts, Jerry.
One, fast food restaurants generally offer a full line of soft
drinks from one of the major distributors (Coca-Cola or Pepsi).
And two, who better than the customer to decide what's "approp-
riate" to drink with the food he orders? You may think someone's
a Philistine for drinking, say, Mountain Dew with his Enchirito[*].
And you may even be right. But by offering the drink the person
wanted, the restaurant attracts and retains his business.
[*] Mind you, I'm not saying that you would. Or even
that Taco bell even offers Mountain Dew. It's just
an arbitrary example.

I had never heard of Jimmy John's so I did an online search. Their menu
sounds great! It seems much better than Subway or Quiznos. In your
opinion, how do the sandwiches compare, and what are the prices like? I'm
curious as well, as to which sandwich you ordered? I don't think I could
choose! What other sub place has avocado, fresh cucumber and sprouts?
If I ever get up that way again (only in summer, mind you), I'll have to
check this place out.

"fast food" places in Europe that do sell burgers and fries (McD's) they
do sell beer and wine, or so i have heard.

Potato salad can be found at just about any large cookout. I'm not a
fan but I've seen it on dozens - maybe hundreds - of plates next to a
burger.
It's not portable enough for fast food. Count the fries on the floor of
your Ford Festiva. Now imagine potato salad laden with mayo in its
place. If you thought your car smelled bad now, it would be uninhabitable!
Dan
> that in those "fast food" places in Europe that do sell burgers and

Yes, there's always beer on the menu, at least in Italy and Germany, and you
can even substitute it for the drink associated with your McMenu.
Don't know if one can substitute beer for the drink in a happy meal menu,
LOL.
The only kind of fast foods who usually don't sell beer or wine are the ones
owned by muslims, for obvious religious issues, and those where the
alcohol-selling license is too expensive or requires too much adjustments to
the shop. In Amsterdam, for example, almost all of the kebab shops and
oriental fast-eateries are alcohol-free because it's very expensive and,
morevoer, to obtain it one must have more structures than ones who doesn't.
I remember a turkish kebab-shop owner telling me he would need to pay much
more money to the Townhall and have two separated bathrooms, which he hadn't
room for. And you can not bring in beer from the nearby pubs: he would get a
fine and, if caugth a second time, he'd risk to lose his shop license for
increasingly long periods of time. It's not as in Australia where you read
B.Y.O. near wine and beer.

I only eat one sub there, Number 5. All the others have mayo on it. Sorry.
Well yeah, but you still have to get up, change, eat something, shower,
drive there, drive home.
Would never happen, I HATE mayo. I only ate Potato salad once.. when I was
5 years old, and I only had two bites at a picnic, then put the rest back in
the bowl.
There ARE plenty of foods that are as unportable as potato salad that are
served as Fast-Food... I know, because I eat primarily in my car. If they
served it properly, in a covered dish with a spoon, potato salad would work
JUST FINE, so your logic falls apart. The reason why they don't is because
it doesn't go with burgers as well as fries and pop do.
YES!!! BECAUSE IT GOES WELL WITH THE FOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
> And two, who better than the customer to decide what's "approp-

That's why they offer a SELECTION, just like the wine list at a fancy
restuarant.
Both your counts are wrong, Geoff.
See steve, this why you always include quoated text, because too many people
forget what they had written. JL, read the text at the very top of the

And BTW yes I've said MANY times here that Alcohol goes VERY well with
fast-food, but then I usually get picked on for it.
Well, that's because your a food fanatic, or a gourmet, most people

Gee Steve, maybe becuse it's ILLEGAL? You ARE familar with laws, right?
Maybe not, becuase of all that drinking you do when you go to fast-food
places at 3 in the morning.
(snip)
Jerry, have you ever had German Potato Salad? You must have had that at
some point in your life living in Wisconsin. I grew up on the stuff! It's
a bacon, sugar and vinegar based potato salad. To me, that goes excellently
with a burger or a steak. (Not that any fast food place serves it and if
they did they wouldn't get the recipe right.) It's my all-time favorite
kind of potato salad. I, like you, don't really care for mayo either.
Besides, when you get a mayo based potato salad, it's almost ALL mayo. Hey,
where's the darn potato? No thanks, I'll pass. I make a mean German Potato
salad based on my grandmother's recipe (her mother was from Germany). It's
a good comfort food for me. :~)
kili
The number 5 sounds great. Do they do an oil and vinegar dressing? In any
case, can't you ask for no mayo on a sandwich or are there no substitutions?
kili <---- curious

LOL, around Rome there are a lot of van who sell hot-dogs, hamburger or
sausage sandwiches from theyr side, and they're all open till very late.
Since they're along the main highway circling around Rome, and since this
area is usually packed with prostitutes all nite long, these vans are called
"magna e tromba", roman slang for "eat and f**k". There can happen very
folkloristic situations around those vans, I wouldn't recommend them to
anybody who's not drunk.

Gack. That's an example of why I avoid buffets, salad and dessert
bars, and food sold out of bulk bins. Especially in places where
grubby-fingered, poorly-supervised little kids are known to be
present. If I'm at a picnic or a backyard BBQ and some little
nosepicker takes a bite of a potato chip or Dorito and sticks it
back into the dip, that's it for me: no more chips and dip for
the duration of the event.
> The reason why they don't is because it doesn't go with burgers

No, it's because people have come to associate fries with burgers
*at fast-food places.* You'll note that as well as fries go with
burgers, they're generally not served with burgers at backyard
BBQs; potato (or macaroni) salad is far more common in that context.
People sometimes eat and drink things differently under different
circumstances. For example, I order Manhattans "up" ar bars, but
make them on the rocks at home. Why? Who knows? I just do.

The point is that they offer the *full line* of soda from the
distributor -- not "only specific items or beverages" as you
state above. They don't omit any selections because they don't
"go well" with their food. They offer it all and let their
customers decide what they want.

But what if the customer chooses "wrong?" Taco Bell food all tastes
pretty much the same; the only real variation is texture. And yet,
a full range of soda is offered, not just a few selections that some
corporate fascist back at Taco Bell HQ decided "go with" the food.

I think so, or it's a special dressing. It's delicious. I suppose I could
ask for no mayo for the other sandwiches, but why when I could have the #5
without it already. I only go there at the most once a week so I won't get
sick of it anytime soon. Maybe I'll take your suggestion next time I go
there, just to try it.
No I haven't, whenver potato salad is around I get it far away from me as
possible, sometimes insulting (by mistake) the person who made it and
offered it to me. And my family is Polish, not German, so that may be
another reason why.
And I agree with that comfort food is good, there are many that my mom makes
that are comfort food, but primarily my comfort foods are from fast-food
places. I've been eating at those places since I was very small, I used to
bike to them all over town when I was a boy, like six or seven.

What is a Manhatten "up"? I am a serious Manhattan drinker, but I never
heard of it being served "up". I'm very curious.
That post was not directed to you at all, Steve, don't butt in.
Have another Beer.
I was really surprised to find a Carl's Junior restaurant (sister restaurant
to Hardees) in Irvine, California that sold beer. Obviously you couldn't
get it through the drive-thru; it had to be consumed inside the restaurant,
but they sold (IIRC) Corona, Tecate, Heineken, Amstel Light, Miller Lite,
Budweiser and Coors Lite. I used to go there for lunch every day, order a
chicken club, no mayo, (and the sandwiches used to have sprouts on them - I
haven't seen sprouts on them in years, now). I'd sneak in a beer and head
back to the office. Ahhhhhh, the good old days! There was a Denny's in
Costa Mesa that used to have a full bar, too. That was a favorite place to
head off to after work for some nachos and beer.
Snipped from Wikipedia and findarticles.com:
In 2002, CKE Restaurants, Inc. acquired Santa Barbara Restaurant Group (the
parent company of the Green Burrito brand). Some Carl's Jr. stores are now
co-branded as Green Burrito locations. At least two Carl's Jr. locations in
downtown Los Angeles serves beer: Macy's Plaza on 7th & Flower and another
located on 9th & Olympic. The Westin Bonaventure Hotel Carl's Jr. also
benefitted from its status as one of the few units in the chain to sell beer
and wine. (They forgot to mention the one I used to go to in Irvine off
MacArthur Blvd.)

So, it *can* be done, but I would assume a stiff cost on the liquor license.
Plus, to sell it at the counter, the employee has to be 21. When I was a
teen and worked at a fast food pizza restaurant (Rocky Rococo's) back in
Wisconsin, the counter person had to be only 18 to pour the beer, but
selling/pouring age may vary between states. Then again, Wisconsin laws may
have changed by now.
Hope this helps!

Uh, Jerry? The fries can be made inside the house, then carried out
to the backyard. You know, just like the potato salad and hamburger
patties were. And no oven or deep fryer is needed. When I was a kid,
my mom made them in a skillet.
> What is a Manhatten "up"? I am a serious Manhattan drinker, but

When a cocktail is served "up," it means "without ice." The drink
is served chilled, but the ice stays behind in the cocktail shaker.
Contrast "over," as in "over ice." If you don't specify a preference
when you order a drink that's commonly served either way, bartenders
and bar waitresses will typically ask, "Up or over?"
I especially enjoy Manhattans in the wintertime. There's something
very appealing about sipping one as I sit in my recliner, close to
the woodstove, while the rain hammers on the roof.

That's just silly. There are many burger places that serve beer, at least
where I live. But I'm not talking Micky D's or Burger King; obviously no
place so blatantly geared towards kids (i.e. those with "playgrounds" and
kiddie meals with toys included). I'm talking *better* burger joints.
Around here there's Huey's, well known for a fresh (not from frozen) burgers
and ice cold beer. There used to be a place called Longnecker's (for
obvious reasons - long-neck bottled beer on ice). It was patterned after
Fudrucker's but Longnecker's burned down and the owners didn't rebuild it.
There are other examples but it doesn't matter. Your opinion, Jerry, will

You are the one who is embarrassing yourself. And trust me, I'm not a huge
fan of Steve's (although we seem to be making headway, especially with THIS
ridiculous thread!) Any food joint can apply for a license to sell beer,
wine or other spirits. What planet do you live on, anyway?
Even restaurants in the so-called "dry" counties in the southern U.S. can
obtain a liquor license. Jonesboro, Arkansas is in a dry county. No liquor
stores, nope, nope, nope. But you can drink in the bar at the Holiday Inn,
because they have a liquor license. And there's a lovely restaurant called
the 501 Club; you have to pay $5 for a year membership but you can drink
there legally to your hearts' content. YOU, sir, are an idiot.

Grill a thick steak, well seasoned with salt and pepper; allow it to

Butter the crusts, put the steak between them and tie up with string.
Wrap in several sheets of clean absorbent paper, place in a press and
tighten it gradually be for leaving it for 30 minutes.
When removed it will be seen that the inside of the sandwich is

YES, but they can't be COOKED outside, and the cook ususally prefers to be
outside where the party is at.
Well he certainly implied it. Let's end the discussion, it's off-topic in
your group.
There's a difference there, Steve, and if you don't know it your dumber then
I thought you were.
I don't eat on the highway, and I don't have a cell-phone. And whenver I
have something that requires a spoon or fork I eat it in the parking lot of
hte restaurant, except for Frosty's from Wendy's which fit in my cup
holders.
And YOU, dear idiot, are now in MY kill-file. Put me back in yours too.
Dammit Stece, if you had any memory at all you would remember that last
Spring I posted about Red Robin and I think it's delicious. You must have
been drunk that night.
Only thing I don't understand is why Steve isn't one of them.
Jerry, word to the wise, Jill isn't a nice person. She pretended to be a
friend of mine for about 5 years and cut me down to the quick. I've
killfiled her, too, although I hate to say so. She *really* hurt my
feelings. All I did was ask for some help on a cake recipe and it turned
into a bash kili fest - started by my supposed friend, Jill.
She's best ignored. Truly. I'm glad you put her in her place - in your
killfile.

I miss Red Robin. They used to have a veggie platter about 20 years ago
that I'd order all the time. I've since looked up their menu online and
they no longer carry it. I guess not enough interest. It was good, though.
It had raw broccoli, peppers, carrots, tomatoes, cauliflower, I can't
remember what else, but it came with a good, Ranch dipping sauce. It may
have also come with a side of black beans. We don't have any Red Robins
around here, that I know of, so I can't comment on their burgers.
What's your favorite menu item, Jerry?

You are in my killfile and shall remain there. The only reason I see these
ridiculous posts is because you keep replying to other people. You can take
your fast food crap and shove it up your behind for all I care. You have no
idea what you're talking about. Bye!
Christy, please don't encourage Jerry the idiot. Fer cryin out loud.
Jill
What a MAROON! Sheesh, Jerry if you'd get your butt out of a fast food
drive through someone might actually take you seriously. Maybe. Might.
Probably not. Go enjoy your Whopper or whatever it is they are serving at
Subway these days. And to whoever welcomed you back to RFC, may a thousand
camels crap on your car.
Jill
Now your a mind reader? I did not "imply" anything i stated quite
openly that in Europe you can get beer and wine at fast food places and
in 4 star restaurants you would be unlikely to get a burger and fries.
People often misunderstand each other. Especially in such a medium as this.
Have aa nice day.
