I think he meant he consumes between $800-$1300 a month on fast food. Based
upon the $1300 guesstimate, that comes to about $325 a week, which seems
like a lot, but then again, he's not paying rent, bills, and, AFAIK, he
still doesn't have a car, so that means no car payments or insurance.
I'd say between my husband, the 3 cats, the 2 pet rats and I, we spend about
$100 a week at the grocery store on food. That doesn't include toiletries,
household neccessities, or any indulgences we may feel like having (i.e.
beer and/or whisky) - that's just on food for us and our "furkids".
Out of curiosity, how much do you folks think you spend per week on food?

I budget $150 per week for myself and my two kids. This includes
groceries, some beer, and the occasional bottle of yummy wine. There
is always some cash left over at the end of the month that goes into
savings.
Our fast-food consumption usually consists of a few meals a month,
usually as road food or after hectic work days.

I would estimate it to be in the 100-150 dollar range. But keep in mind
that includes Coffee and pizza. And all my meals except fo rone usually
daily. So it's a pretty sweet deal, MUCH cheaper then a sit-down restourant
or a staggering grocery-store bill.

Steve, Identity theft is msuch more then just Credit Card Fraud. But that's
the one that gets all the attention. Basically, anytime you steal someone's
identity, (like buster hymen did) then your guilty of identity theft,
irregardless of if credit was involved.

Hey, numbnutz, you had fried fish, too; even though the batter came out
gummy. I'm going to stick to my usual methods of frying fish instead of
trying to incorporate pre-fab batter. Ugh. Keeping this post semi-on
topic, it tasted just like McDonald's fish that's been sitting under a heat
lamp in a lunch rush, instead of being light and crispy. I used some sort
of boxed fish batter with beer and it didn't work. The box is now in the
trash!
TFM® makes the best fried chicken, though, I swear. He does a cornmeal mix
batter with garlic, salt & pepper and his chicken always comes out great.
Beats KFC hands down! (And it's much cheaper, too!)

My aunt and uncle have their doctorates. They have to go back each year to
write a thesis to retain their doctorate status. My aunt speaks 11
languages, my uncle speaks 7. They're both Professors; he of English and
History and she in the Arts. (My aunt is a semi-famous opera singer, by the
way.) If I ever have to phone someone if I'm on a trivia show, they'd be
the first that would come to mind. :~)
I, on the other hand, went to college for 4 years, but never got a degree
because I wanted to take the classes that *I* wanted to take and not the
ones that were required to get a degree. It doesn't matter. I owned my own
business for 10 years, I've managed businesses, I've had corporate positions
in banking departments, I've managed a corporate customer service department
for a large health club chain... you don't need a degree. What you need
are good negotiating skills, computer skills, and a command of the English
language.

Well, grocery store prices are going up, I'll give you that. Still, we try
to eat at home as much as possible. The only thing we really like to go out
for is a salad bar. You can sit down at a restaurant, Like Ruby Tuesday,
and pay $6.99 per person. Okay, that's $14.00 plus tax. Try going to a
supermarket and see if making your own salad, with all the choices you get
at a salad bar - plus repeat trips - you pay any less than $30. By the time
you buy the lettuce & ingredients (2 -3 kinds of lettuce for mixed greens,
cheese, ham, peas, eggs, bacon, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers,
croutons, olives, garbonzo beans, seeds & dressing) you've racked up quite
the grocery bill.
To be honest, I used to love Jack In The Box's salads. Kind of pricey at
$4.99, but they'd last me two meals. Sadly, we don't have a JITB here. I'm
going to have to try the McD's Bacon Ranch Salad and see how it compares. I
have yet to do that, but I will, and I'll review it.

My salads must be a lot less complicated than yours...
For my favorite, Caesar salad, one bunch of Romaine lettuce (or just
about any other kind, as a substitute), will provide 3 salads. About 50
cents' worth of lettuce. Add in a sliced tomato or two, add (sometimes)
bell pepper, cucumber, etc., and the finished salad goes up to maybe
$2, tops.
(Caesar dressing, be it Cardini's or some other brand, lasts for many
salads per $4 bottle. Vinagrette dressing, which I use in other salads,
I make out of olive oil and vinegar, naturally, and it costs pennies
per salad.)
For a salad with more meat in it, a Salade Nicoise adds canned albacore
tuna, perhaps $1 for the cheap stuff, $3 for the fanciest stuff.
For a chef salad, the cheese, ham, etc., all provide many salads for
pack each of cheese, ham, etc.
Preparing salads for two, as your calculation above covers, should be
even more economical. No way do the ingredients for two salads come
anywhere close to $14.
(I also grow some of my own tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers, but this
only comes into play when they are ready, which will be only for a few
months during the summer.)

BTW, when I want to eat at a salad bar, I go to Fresh Choice (same
company as Soup Plantation, IIRC). And even then, it's one trip to the
salad bar, where I sample several kinds of salads, add sunflower seeds,
nuts, radishes, weird stuff). The real attraction is the baked potato
bar, where I can make a nice big baked potato just the way I like it.
Oh, and they, like a lot of places, have raised their prices.
While grocery store prices have gone up in some areas, the correlation
between restaurant prices and grocery prices is relatively constant.
"I can't afford grocery stores, so I eat at restaurants" is an oxymoron.

Yep. I just posted about much less expensive my salads are to make than
what Killikinni alludes to for her salads. If she thinks paying $7 for
a salad is Ruby Tuesday is a better deal than making a salad at home,
she's delusional. "I can't afford grocery stores, so I eat at
restaurants."
Even for Jerry's burger obsession, making them at home is more
economical than buying them at fast food places.
A natural reason for fast food is that one is _away_ from home. But if
at home, home cooking is almost always vastly more economical.
(Which is why when I see a mom with her litter of chilluns eating at
"Mickey D's," I know why it is that they are constantly demanding more
welfare money. Poor people are the _last_ people who ought to be taking
meals at fast food places.)

Okay, I guess we like complicated salads. Allan wants everything in the
world in his and he eats a HUGE bowl or *two*. Not kidding. Broccoli,
celery, onion, radishes, mushrooms, tomato, green pepper, cucumber, ham,
cheese, cauliflower, peas, olives, eggs, crumbled bacon, with blue cheese
dressing. I keep mine simple; lettuce, cheese, peas, olives, croutons,
celery, bacon bits and dressing. If we go out, I may add a tablespoon of
potato salad or pasta salad in addition. I'm a one-plater, though. I can't
eat more than that. So, *that's* why it costs us so much to make a salad;
my husband is a piggy-poo. LOL. Alright, I'm feeling silly. Maybe it's
the whisky. I'm indulging today. :~)
