They're expensive without a doubt does anyone here use one and what is
your opinion on the
cost/benefit factor?

Worth the money. In order to offset your cost, instead of using
commercial lump charcoal as fuel, use buffalo dung.

Don't be ridiculous. Cattle dung is easier to find and works just as
well. I think you buffalo dung guys on the prairie are just elitists.

They're a helluva lot cheaper than a lotta metal boxes that won't last
nearly as long.
Check Kalamazoo,Wilmington,HastyBake,et al. and then come back and
whinge about expenditure/quality of BGE.
I use a diff brand of flowerpot but the idea IMO was to buy something
that would be the last cooker I'd ever need.

What about the weight? Can you get it home in a small car?

Can you move it off the porch for hurricane season?

Yes, with the optional Big Green Crane.

If it's too heavy to move, a hurricane isn't going to bother it much
is it?

Limited thinking. What if my neighbor's chair is driven into the side
of it by 80 mile/hour winds or worse?

Then it will be easier to move.

IIRC the wheeled base is optional. But it has small casters so it's not
going to be much help if you have to cross any obstacles taller than a few
inches.

If I had one and was concerned about mobility I think I'd consider modifying
an appliance dolly. And again IIRC there are two sizes of BGE's, and the big
one can be a real bitch to move.

I've seen people bring tile-covered Kamados to barbecue contests, mainly at
Lenexa, and it takes four guys to securely roll them out of a trailer.

However this year getting the Kamados out of the truck was not the main
entertainment at Lenexa. A team one pit behind and over from us had two
trailered smokers, a Lang and a Horizon. On Friday, they failed to level the
smoker before firing. They had just done a major cook a few days before in
the Lang and apparently didn't level it then either and didn't clean the
grease out. All the grease ran downhill to the firebox and when they fired
it, the entire interior of the smoker including a tall warming box at the
far end ignited. It's humiliating enough when the Fire Department has to
come over and put out your pit, but then the next day during haul out, they
failed to secure the Horizon after pulling the wheel chocks and it took off
downhill a short distance until it hit another team's trailer. Nobody will
want to be downhill from that team next year. They need to put them by the
lake.

Major fail. And major fun to watch, since nobody got hurt.

Comps sure are fun, ain't they.
When I was a reserve Wildlife Officer, it was fun just to park near a busy
boat ramp and watch the boats load and unload.
Was like a Circus and way better than TV. One guy would pull up to the
ramp in his boat, get out and get his trailer backed down and his boat
loaded and tied down and be gone in 3 minutes. The next boat would have 4
guys and it would take 30-45 minutes for them to get the boat on the trailer
and out of the water. And this was after running into and over the dock with
the boat or maybe swimming after the boat after it floated away.
And it went on and on.
No cooking today, patching fence, working on lawn mower and my wheelchair
carrier. The pin came out of the ramp and now it looks like a pretzel
Tomorrow a nice Widder Lady about 25 miles from here is feeding me. Fourth
Sunday now.
Labor day weekend it is a hog killing and pig picking in South Georgia.

We have a 10 year old Kamado that we wouldn't trade for the world. We were going thru gas bbq's in about 2 or 3 years. Yes they, ceramic cookers, are expensive, but it has paid for itself many times over. We got the wheels on the Kamado, a # 5 size, and it takes 2 men to get it up and down the stairs, 3 or 4, from the top deck to the bottom, but it wheels nicely.
The kids are jokingly fighting over it when we're gone. They say the first one with a pick up truck and friends to help schlep it, gets it!!

If it broke irreparably we would replace it immediately with a new one.
