Description: Urban legends, ala Jan Harold Brunvand.

Phucerself, Mabelle
All this talk of phone companies, combined with my annoyance over a recent billing dispute, has reminded me of something I read in some "weird news" type column more than half my life ago. It might have been in National Lampoon, not exactly known for sacrificing humour for the sake of accuracy. It said that someone managed to get a telephone listing in some "white pages"... more »

TURKEY IN THE RAW
< I have just read Sarah Palin's new book, "Going Rouge -- An American Nightmare" and, it is so funny, I actually peed in my pants.. < [link] < I loved the part where she spared the life of one turkey -- not herself, mind you -- and let the kiddies see a lot of... more »

BREAKING NEWS -- Moon Made of Mozzarella Cheese
< Boy, those NASA "scientists" apparently will do almost anything to keep their plushy jobs. < The latest is their revelation that the moon apparently has lots of water. < Amazingly, they have said so even though NONE OF THEM has actually seen the water, let alone tasted it to make sure it's water abd not battery acid.... more »

The end of the world
Everybody's talking about the world coming to an end in 2012, and all because it was predicted by the Mayan calendar.... What I want to know is, if the Mayans were such great shakes at predicting stuff, how come their calendar didn't mention anything special about 1697 when the *Mayans* came to an end?...... more »

Starving people refuse to eat food aid
...This strikes me as ULicious, with the theme of "them ignerent savages". Can't find this in searching for "famine" in snopes or The Straight Dope, or for famine and corn in Google Groups here. Anyone see this one before?

El Paso off-duty cop shoots would-be robbers
Sent to me in email from a very gullible source: [link] No date, no names from the El Paso police department, no identifiable businesses in the background, and it really doesn't look like acceptable police protocol to straddle a suspect and point a gun at... more »

dollar serial question
I received five very crisp one dollar bills in the mail today. I was looking at them to see if they were brand new, and if they were new, whether they were consecutively numbered. They're not. They do, however, they all have the same last three numbers. Three of them are different only in the fifth digit (A 66645453 A, 66646453 A, and... more »

Numbers and angles
Sorry if this has already been posted. I haven't been following this froup closely for some time. My son's grade 4 teacher sent home a powerpoint presentation that she thought (and apparently the kids also thought) was amazing. The opening is "I shared this with my students today and they really found it... more »
