The problem with Haider, according to Steiner, is not that he
represents some slickly packaged reincarnation of the 20th century's
most notorious Austrian house painter but that he doesn't understand
the resonances of the Nazi era in contemporary Europe.
"Austria was deeply involved in the crimes of Hitler, and Haider is the
expression of Austria's amnesia," said Steiner.

I suggest those who are interested in Hitler's failed career as an
artist read what was written about it in "The Rise and Fall of the
Third Reich," where author William Shirer points out some oddities in
the subject matter of Hitler's paintings.

"Within a few days I myself also knew that I ought to become an
architect. But of course the way was very difficult. I was now forced
bitterly to rue my former conduct in neglecting and despising certain
subjects at the Realschule. Before taking up the
courses at the School of Architecture in the Academy it was necessary to
attend the Technical Building School; but a necessary qualification for
entrance into this school was a Leaving Certificate from the Middle
School. And this I simply did not have. According to the human measure
of things my dream of following an artistic calling seemed beyond the
limits of possibility."
Yup, from *that* book. Naughty me.
