Just noted to friends Elsewhere that among all the other foofaraw fogging
around Michael Jackson's death, I've been running across a "Michael Jackson
is _still_ dead" meme every so often. Haven't seen this recently for any other
celebrity, and research showed that the original SNL version is now 34 years
old (and has its _own Wikipedia page_ furrfu). It seems possible that
independent invention is happening for the places I see it, but that brings
the question of why it'd happen for MJ and not for Ed or Farrah, for example.

I think that, in this case, the "MJ is still dead" meme is showing up
because people are bloody sick of hearing about Michael Jackson's
death. The other night, the memorial service was almost the only
thing (other than the ubiquitous porn) one could find on German TV.
For days (which seemed like years), Jackson's death was the dominant
news story. I wanted to stand up and shout, "He's dead. Get over
it."

On the other hand, news coverage for Ed and Farrah was almost not
there. You could have watched the coverage for both in the time it
took to eat an American or a Canadian. A JFK might have gone faster,
though...

It's no surprise that Ed, Farrah and even Karl are still dead.

I first ran across it in a Washington Post piece about MJ. The writer
was moaning about how the media were about to spend all weekend
"reminding us that Michael Jackson is still dead" but now they had Sara
Palin to kick around. I've been saying it ever since.

Indeed. I too spontaneously made that joke, riffing off Chase's joke
about Franco and about the non-stop coverage of Jackson.

In another newsgroup I was roundly condemned for expressing surprise
that Jackson's death got more coverage than Fawcett's. I was told I
was out of touch with reality for not realizing that Jackson was the
most famous person ever.

Well, I was never a fan of MJ, but he was a way cool dancer in his day,
even attracted the attention of Fred Astaire; Farah Fawcett was at best
a mediocre actress.

As The Onion put it: Farah Fawcett dies alone on national television.

Let's see what Google has to say:

Results 1 - 10 of about 195,000,000 for "Michael Jackson".
Results 1 - 10 of about 47,800,000 for "Jesus Christ".
Results 1 - 10 of about 35,200,000 for "The Beatles".
Results 1 - 10 of about 19,500,000 for "Farrah Fawcett".
Results 1 - 10 of about 1,340,000 for "Ed McMahon".
Results 1 - 10 of about 26,200 for "Keith Lynch".
Results 1 - 10 of about 3,820 for "Lon Stowell".

Wikipedia gives the same ordering, except for Jesus:

Michael_Jackson has been viewed 13502014 times in 200906.
The_Beatles has been viewed 3800945 times in 200906.
Farrah_Fawcett has been viewed 2100944 times in 200906.
Ed_McMahon has been viewed 740073 times in 200906.
Jesus has been viewed 279369 times in 200906.
Keith_Lynch has been viewed 2 times in 200906.
Lon_Stowell has been viewed 0 times in 200906.

("Jesus Christ," which has fewer hits, forwards to "Jesus." You and
I don't actually have pages, but attempts to look at our nonexistent
pages are logged anyway. These numbers are available from
http://stats.grok.se/)

So I guess my critic was right. Michael Jackson really is the most
famous person in the world. Frightening, isn't it?

Certainly. If someone shouts your name when they hit themselves on
the thumb with a hammer, they're referring to you. (Unless there's

And it's not only continuing, it's reached a new level. Today one of

What next? "NTSB rules that DC Metro crash not related to Jackson"?
