Okay, for many of you out there, you're probably tearing your hair out
trying to find the best hangover cure......or at least something that
eases the symptoms.
Well, you're talking to a tried-and-true "Hangover Veteran". I've been
in the trenched more times than I care to count. For myself, I've
found the best home concocted remedies yet available. Let's put it
this way, if you can find anything better (other than not drinking),
I'd like to hear about it.
First up, the best thing to do is "get in first" with some
preparation. In other words, things you can do BEFORE you crash out in
bed like a pickled skunk:

Drink some water before bed. I don't mean a small pathetic baby cup -
no. I am talking about a true blue honest-to-goodness Imperial Pint
type of glass. If you can down two of them, the more the better.
Alcohol dehydrates you like a shrivelled prune, which is one (of many)
reasons your innards feel like the bottom of a wheelie bin the next
morning.

A massive dose of Multi-B Vitamins. All the B's combined. Don't stuff
around with the garbage they sell at the supermarket; go straight to
your pharmacy and buy some really hardcore gear. Have one of these at
the start of the night, one when you get home, and one the next
morning. While Vitamin B is no 100% cure, it does reduce the nausea to
a considerable degree. The strongest stuff in Australia I've found
over the counter is:
Nature's Own MEGA B 150 plus L-Tryptophan (all in one)
Another Vitamin B/Hangover tablet that works is Hydrodol (formerly
Alcodol), but it's frightfully expensive.
http://www.femail.com.au/hangovers_alcodol.htm

If you're able, have something to eat before bed. Don't ask to me to
explain why, but having a feed before bed alleviates the Hell that's
coming the next morning. But in the name of God (or Allah) in Heaven,
avoid Yiros (Souvlaki) with Garlic Sauce! If you're stupid enough to
woof down a Yiros/Souvlaki with Garlic Sauce, then you've just
amplified the suffering that's heading your way in the morning. The
garlic + alcohol turns your insides into some bizarre chemical
cocktail that would beffudle NASA and the CIA combined...not to mention
make you suffer the next morning and smell like some fermented road
kill.

If you can stay awake for a little while and sober up (slightly)
before you actually fall asleep, this makes a HUGE difference the next
day. Don't know why, but it makes a difference. I think this has
something to do with how alcohol affects your sleeping rhythms, or
some such. Let's put it this way, there's been times when I've gone
out, got p*ssed upto my eyeballs, stayed awake all night without
sleeping, and ended up feeling terribly tired the next day, but not
actually hungover, as such. Go figure.

Okay, now you've read all that, now it's time to deal with the beast
the next day. What to do when Satan has you firmly in his clutches.
Okay, first thing is more water. Litres of it. If you're like me, and
your innards feel like grated razor blades, then some Eno mixed with
Iced Water does wonders. I would also strongly advise you to avoid
coffee/caffeine products bigtime.
As well as that, get some (junk) food into you, along with more Multi-
B Vitamins.
There is also one magical pill that is available that goes a LONG way
to relieving the shakes, tension, headaches, sweats, anxiety, and
general irritability that you feel. This stuff is called:

***** Mersyndol Forte *****
http://betterhealth.vic.gov.au/bhcv2/bhcmed.nsf/pages/swcmersf/$File/swcmersf.pdf

If I'll say this once, I'll say this a thousand times - do NOT take
this stuff unless you check first with your Doctor and Pharmacist, and
thoroughly read the label. As a general rule of thumb, whenever I buy
anything from the Pharmacist, I always ask two very basic questions:
Does this clash with alcohol? (Not to be confused with "exacerbate the
effects" of alcohol, which basically means a multiplying effect - a
good thing in my books)
Does this clash with any other medication/vitamins, no matter how
minor they might be.
You don't wanna stuff this up and end up seeing pink lawnmowers flying
upside down around your house before winding up in Casualty Ward.
Don't f*ck around with mixing pills, unless you're 100% sure you know
what you're doing.

Mersyndol Forte is basically like a V12 version of Panadeine, but with
a few lovely added extras. The ingredient that really makes the
difference is called "doxylamine succinate". This is a type of
antihistamine that has a strong calmative effect. This stuff knocks
the wind out of the hangover's sails like nothing on God's green
earth. And then some.

If you do decide to take some Mersyndol Forte, you wanna make sure-as-
sh*t that you've sorted out all your driving and "logistics" for the
day, cos once you take one or two of these lovelies, you'll be very
close to dozing off within the hour. What I generally do is get some
DVD's from the store, followed by a hearty serving of Hungry Jacks
(Burger King for the Yanks), then get just one or two (Mercury Dry)
Ciders on ice, lie down in front of the TV.....then (and only then) pop
two of the magic pills. Amen.

I have heard that SAMe + Niacinamide is the best cure -- I find if gives me a stomache ache.

Eating cheese works for me.

Sorry, but can you please explain what "SAMe + Niacinamide" is? Have't
heard of either of them.
Thanks.

Oh, should've mentioned this before.....you need a Prescription (in
Australia) to get Mersyndol Forte, but if you want to buy standard
Mersyndol, you only need to provide your name and address to the
Pharmacist.

SAMe is a mood elevator and antidepresant licenced in some countries but

Niacinamide is a strong B Vitamin well known as ENADA among people with
ME as an energy booster. The combination is supposed to work
synergisticly as a treatment for ME which is how I heard of it.
The poster also mentioned that it was the best hangover cure in the world.
I decided to try the combo to see if it worked for me. It does work
better than anything the doctor prescribes but has the side effect of
upsetting my stomache. I have discontinued my trails twice because of
this. Also both are quite expensive to buy.
Both of these drugs or supplements work for some people and not for
others. as we always say when suggesting a product YMMV.

I found an article online that explains what causes hangovers. It says

"Although there is no precise definition, most researchers agree that
a hangover consists of a spectrum of common symptoms, such as
headache, nausea, diarrhea, fatigue, cognitive impairment, and an
overall poor sense of well-being. These symptoms are caused by
alcohol's numerous physiological effects on the body:

++ Dehydration leads to headache, nausea, vomiting, and many other
symptoms. When alcohol enters the body, it promotes urination - well
out of proportion to the amount of fluid taken in - by inhibiting the
effects of antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin). Consume 250 mL of
alcohol (about 4 drinks) and you'll eliminate (via urination) about
1000 mL (about a quart) of water over the course of several hours. As
its name implies, antidiuretic hormone tends to suppress urination;
thus, inhibiting its action has the opposite effect. Unless you
replace the lost fluids, excess urination can lead to dehydration,
which in turn can result in symptoms like headache, nausea, and
vomiting, leading to further fluid loss and electrolyte imbalance.
Dehydration is signaled by thirst, weakness, dry mouth, nose, and
eyes, dizziness, and lightheadedness.7
++ GI upset. Alcohol irritates and inflames the stomach and
intestines. It also increases the secretion of gastric acid and other
gastrointestinal (GI) agents. Any or all of these effects can lead to
upper GI pain, nausea, and vomiting.7
++ Headache. Headache is the most common hangover symptom. Although it
is unclear exactly how alcohol causes headaches, it is known that
alcohol intoxication results in vasodilation, which may be a factor.
Alcohol also affects several neurotransmitters and hormones (eg,
histamine, serotonin, and prostaglandins) that may play a role in the
pathogenesis of headaches.
++ Congeners and inflammatory responses. Alcohol has pro-inflammatory
effects that are reflected in elevated levels of prostaglandins,
hormone-like substances that are involved in inflammatory reactions.8
The most severe hangovers are generally associated with the
consumption of alcohol containing high levels of congeners, closely
related alcohols and natural byproducts of the fermentation or
distillation processes, which contribute to the taste, smell, and
appearance of alcoholic beverages. Some congeners are thought to
elicit an inflammatory response. Drinking alcohol without congeners
may actually reduce your risk of a hangover (See below). Darker
liquors, such as brandy, tequila, whiskey, bourbon, or red wine, have
more congeners -- and a greater risk of hangover -- than clear/colorless
liquors, like gin, vodka, and white wine.
++ Acetaldehyde, a major culprit. One nasty consequence of consuming
ethyl alcohol and probably a major factor in hangover symptoms, is
alcohol's inevitable metabolism to the toxic compound acetaldehyde. At
higher concentrations, acetaldehyde causes rapid pulse, sweating, skin
flushing, nausea, vomiting, and other toxic effects. Acetaldehyde is
itself metabolized to the benign compound acetic acid (aka vinegar) or
acetate for short. These metabolic processes take time, however, so if
you drink slowly, acetaldehyde does not accumulate, making hangover
symptoms less likely. However, it you drink too much too quickly, not
only will you get drunk, but your body will accumulate more
acetaldehyde than it can readily handle without discomfort. The
result: a hangover. "

...and here's a link to an article that says that much of the damage
caused by acetaldehyde can be prevented by taking vitamins B1, C, and
Cysteine prior to and during drinking: http://www.springerlink.com/content/g414523058x71604/

Has anyone considered the possiblity that a 'hangover' is a crude
attempt to subvert the minds of drinkers hatched by the Evil Triad that
is MI5, the BBC and the Tadcaster/Burton-on-Trent brewing cartels. It
is a little known fact that both Michael Buerke AND Nicholas Witchell
have NEVER been offered places on the boards of these sinister
organisations - conclusive proof, if any was needed. Furthermore, yeast
organisms are known to be able to communicate telepathically directly
into the brains of both Kate Adie AND John Humphries. So watch out beer
drinkers! Remember, only ever drink ale while wearing your aluminium
foil protection hat - preferably earthed directly to the mains. It is
the only way to stop the massed yeast brain probe.

Hey ho. Any beer recipes on here?

[good article snipped]

What I found worked for me in the past, (because I don't drink in such a
way as to have hangovers any more) is to have the following, on the next
morning:

Strong hot black tea (very strong, to the point where you can't see the
bottom of the cup), sweetened quite generously - to the level of Coke or
even sweeter - with real sweetener - sugar or honey - like three
teaspoons per cup. Add to that a large lemon piece (a quarter to 1/3 of
a lemon per cup), and have at least two or three cups of the stuff -
eating the lemon pieces in the process (rind included). Worked like a
charm for me. Stopped the nausea and headache, and restored appetite for
breakfast.
