Chapter 18

Ron sat in the car for several minutes. Realizing he was not
participating in any way, he decided to go in and get involved. If
this Nora person were responsible, then he should confront her.
Certainly he owed it to himself and his brother to at least check out
the old woman's story. The images he saw when she touched him were
certainly convincing if they were true, but it could just be some kind
of parlor trick as far as he knew. Ron got out of the car and walked
the short distance to the house. He listened for sounds as he climbed
the steps to the porch but heard none. As he tried to open the front
door, he again saw visions as soon as his hand touched the knob, but
he was unable to turn the handle. Instead he stood there, absorbing
the scenes forming in his head.
It was like a silent war, arms waving, hands forming shapes,
mouths forming chants, as the two women, one young, the other old,
danced a ritualistic battle against each other. There was no sound
other than faint whispered chants, and no visual evidence of any
physical activity other than the movements of the two women at
opposite ends of the room. As they continued their battle, the house
began to creak and moan. Repaired cracks on the wall reopened, and
new shingles slid off the roof and onto the ground. It was like the
house was shedding all the work put into it over the last many months.
Ron retreated off the porch as the wooden planks below him
began to give way and warp. He stood several feet off the steps
watching the house appear to fall into decay before his very eyes.
Within minutes the nearly restored house returned to the sad state of
a home abandoned for decades. The walls groaned and buckled, the
porch caved in. Windows fell from their sash to the ground and
shattered, others shattered in place. The roof sagged and with a loud
growl, caved into the upstairs rooms. This was followed by the
outside walls which fell both inward and outward into the yard causing
Ron to retreat even further.
After only a few minutes of falling timbers and paneling, the
house lay in complete ruins, having caved in all the way to the
ground. Out of the ruble walked a beautiful young woman. Not the
same he had seen at the house Saturday. As he looked at her, he
recognized her as the younger version of the old woman he had brought
out her tonight. She walked straight up to him and stopped just
inches away. "Got a light?" she asked in a husky sensual voice.
Silently Ron handed her his lighter. She lit a piece of paper
she had retrieved off the ground and lit it. She tossed the flaming
paper into the pile of the destroyed house and the wood burst into
flames instantly. They were not just flames, they were somehow
different. Bright blue, and iridescent green. And they wove and
danced slowly, and made a sound like a far away scream. After less
than an hour, there was only a hole in the ground to show that there
had ever been a house here.
The young woman turned to spoke again. "There is only one
more thing I want. I have my vengeance. I made you a promise, and
I'll keep it. Go back to your brother and wait for me at the
hospital. Don't worry, I will be there soon." With that she walked
away and vanished into the night. Ron stood and stared for several
minutes slowly coming back out of the trance had had been in really
since she had touched him in the hospital waiting room. He only now
realized that he had been, and the shock of what he had just witnessed
flowed through him. Slowly his legs gave way and he sank to his
knees, shivering. Had he really witnessed all this? He must have for
the house was gone.
He could do nothing else here, so he climbed back into his car
and headed back to the hospital. He was still in a bit of shock as he
arrived, and returned to the waiting room. He had caught sit of
himself as he had entered the car, and saw that his own youth had
returned. Was this a sign she would keep her word or was the entire
thing a bad dream, a low trick? He would have to wait and see, but
for now, he wanted to see his brother was okay. It was only this
concern that helped him retain his sanity in the insane moments he had
witnessed. If, that is, he really had.

I generally don't post just linger and lurk. But your stories are always
intriguing, great work. Have you ever had them published?
