Feb 1962--Bell Dataphone ad
|
| |
Bell Telephone had ads for data transmission telephones in the
Computers & Automation magazine. The first units had various shapes,
but the unit pictured in this ad looked to be the dataphone (a.k.a.
Dataset) widely used in the 1960s and 1970s.
The text of the ad reads roughtly:

computer in 1965 movie
|
| |
TCM showed a 1965 comedy, "Our Man Flint", a spoof of spy pictures.
At the start, they decided to select a new agent by computer, based on
specs by various managers. The scene shifts to a machine room.
We see cards being punched on 026 punches, though the sound is like a
typewriter. We then see the cards sorted on Remington Rand sorters.... more »

As mentioned, bitsavers as added a collection of these magazines

They make for fascinating reading. Some advertisments tout features

Datamatic 1000, apparently the Honeywell 300 isn't, since it uses 24
bit integers instead of 45 bit integers.
In looking for Honeywell 300 information, I came across the
appointment of an individual as President of a society for Honeywell... more »

Before the PDP-8
|
| |
I see that the SPC-12 manual is on Bitsavers; I had looked for it
there before long ago, and had not found it then.
I looked now because an issue of Computers and Automation from 1969
mentioned two 12-bit computers - the ELBIT 100 and the Motorola
MDP-1000.
Those aren't described on Al Kossow's site, but I see the Computer... more »

Model 40 Prototype?
|
| |
In an advertisement belonging to a series "IBM reports to the
industry", on page 28 of the November, 1964 issue of Computers and
Automation (now available on Al Kossow's site), in the first column,
under the heading "SYSTEM/360 includes universal code capabilities",
there is a small photograph of more of an unusual System/360 front... more »
