When science fiction most recently turned up in this newsgroup, I
mentioned that a strict definition of SF (one that includes "plausible
science") relegates any story involving faster-than-light travel to the
realm of fantasy, since there is absolutely no reason to believe FTL
light travel is possible. Somebody pointed out that there was an
experiment at CERN that appeared to show neutrinos travelling slightly
faster than light (as if this meant that it might be possible to
accelerate a macroscopic-scale object to the speed of light without
using infinite energy). To what I hope is a surprise to nobody, it
looks like those results have been explained without completely
redefining modern physics.
