Subject: Why let Scientologists into this newsgroup
Regarding JimDBB's post that accuses me of being a Scientologist.
I was going to reply with heavy sarcasm, but am too sad to summon up a
sense of humor.
I am not a Scientologist.  I have read enough and seen enough of
Scientology (prior to the Charge of the ARS Brigade, mind you) to stay
well clear of them, as an institution.  I do not, however, believe such
shunning should be applied to people who happen to believe in
Scientology.  I was personally raised in a religion that went through a
long period of social condemnation and persecution.  While I have come
to believe that much of that condemnation was warranted, it still pains
me to think of the personal suffering that innocent believers suffered
simply for believing.  Religion, cult, or money making rip-off, you
cannot deny that Mr. McKean and many others believe it gives them moral
direction.
When Mr. McKean and his fellows started posting to this room, I was
deeply troubled; not only by what I believed to be CCHR's attempts to
appropriate a good cause for their own arguably ulterior ends, but also
because it was introducing more "outsider" elements - that is, non-
survivors who figured they had all the answers.
As if we haven't heard enough of that kind of horseshit from
psychiatrists or psychiatric wannabes.
But I cannot reiterate enough, Mr. McKean has shown what the vast
majority of ARS commandos have not; respect, humility and
consideration.  When Scientologists were politely asked to leave
another mental-health related newsgroup by that group's regulars, they
politely left.  And as far as I know, they haven't been back since.
All we've asked is that people from your newsgroup NOT flood this room
with posts that have nothing to do with the topic at hand.  You have
every moral right to counter Mr. McKean's CCHR posts with related
material that illustrates what you believe to be contradictions.  You
do not have the moral right to flood this room with taunting, insults
and accusations.
Shame on you, JimDBB.  I had thought that people like you and John
Dorsay could present a reasoned influence on your fellow ARS regulars
to curb their ranting idiocies.  Instead, you've accused me of being a
Scientologist.
I think that speaks loads.
