THE ON-GOING "Nuremberg Files" trial
-- in which women's health clinics are suing
several fringe pro-life groups over a web site
and posters accusing abortion providers of
"Crimes Against Humanity" -- is being hailed
by pundits as a critical First Amendment
litmus test. But as the reference to "Crimes
Against Humanity" suggests, the underlying
issue is not just freedom of speech about
reproductive rights but how this speech has
escalated into the hysteria and violence that
both defines and paralyzes dialogue on
abortion rights in the US. This trial now finds
itself in a sort of semiotic limbo, where the
issues central to the choice/life movement
are not so much about the body and law,
but unmoored icons and rhetorical extremes.
