I am going to a lake house and the owner is letting me borrow an 11' 2
man bass boat. It is rated for a 5HP max gas, but I have access to a
17 lb thrust electric. ( Boat has no motor now.) I will only be using
it in a cove of the lake. Never used an electric, so would this be
enough power to get around and could I use a car battery instead of a
deep cycle one? I don't plan on using the motor all the time and would
charge it up when not in use. Thanks.

The electric should do just fine for that boat. As for the battery,
it will do OK, it just won't last as long as a Deep Cycle would. Just
to be on the safe side, make SURE that you have oars or a paddle
along, just in case.....

Yes, there will be paddles on board. Any idea how long the regular
battery would last, for example an hour? 4 hours? Assuming it is not
full throttle, just going from one spot to the next in a cove.

You *should* be able to get a few hours out of it. Just perform a
little test - Filll a trash-can with water and run the motor in the
can, and time it. Now, subtract 25% of the time - when in the boat,
you will be putting a load on the motor that you cannot simulate on
land.

Thanks, good idea.

That small size trolling motor will run for 12 hours or more on a
regular car battery if the battery is in good shape
