We're going out for dinner. But I'll be spending the afternoon -
unless I get too frustrated - trying to figure out the GPS he got me.
I did ask for it, but being technically challenged and impatient also,
I still haven't figured out how to put a destination in! I press the
button and enter the city, but then ..... well, eventually I'll figure
it out. LOL! I think there's a bunch of stuff I have to download
too.

Gee, I could have asked for a book. I hardly ever drive anyway. I
thought maybe I would drive more if I had directions to where I wanted
to go. LOL!

How long did it take you to figure out all the options and make it
work? Gosh I even get my choice of what the maps look like. How do
I know which one I'll want? Then after I played around to select a
voice it said I may want a computer voice as that is the one that
works with traffic alerts. Hmmmm...

Gee, I don't even use all of my options. I generally have it in
map mode, and I have it oriented like the car is and not with
North automatically on the top. if I know I am going somewhere, I
research the route first. If there is a detour or backed-up
traffic, it is easy enough to see what one needs to do. I am sure
others would not like doing things this way, but it works very
well for me.

I'm not sure I have all the options figured out yet. How do you know which
one you'll want? Select one and try it for a while. I started out using
mine to go places I already know how to get to, so I'd get the feel of it.
Mine doesn't give me traffic alerts, but I usually have the car radio on a
station that gives traffic reports every 10 minutes. I do use a computer
voice, because that's the one that gives the names of the streets.

I prefer having the map oriented like the car is too, although I seldom look
at it when I'm driving. I used to check out my route with a map, or print
directions from Mapquest as a backup, but I haven't been doing that lately.
One thing I learned recently, though, is to write down the address if I've
never been there before. My TomTom tells me, "You have reached your
destination" when I turn onto the street where my destination is located.
If it's some way down the street and I keep driving, it will say something
like, "In 200 feet, you have reached your destination." I had put the
person's name in my favorites instead of the address, so the address didn't
show. I had to guess at the house. Luckily I guessed right.

The most inportant place to put in is your Home address. That way if
you need to know how to get back home a few button pushes will get
directions.

The next most important thing is to call it anything except "home"!

Then if they steal your car, they can't find their way easily to your
house and clean it out...

I name mine "Police". :-)

Of course if you always remove it from your car and carry it with you,
it doesn't matter.

It also said not to leave the mount or they could break into your car
thinking you had hidden it inside somewhere. David ordered a beanbag
holder for me that just sits on the dash, and you can take the whole
thing and slide it under your seat when you get out of the car.

Mine had a guided tour when I first turned it on and it is pretty
simple but it didn't explain how to get the signal. And I couldn't
find it on their website either, but David found a general url for GPS

Even if you remove the mount, it leaves circle marks on the windshield and
if you don't remove them, thieves know what made the marks and are liable to
break in your car looking for the GPS.

Mine only has a very basic diagrammatic indication on the screen, and no
map, but I never look at the screen when driving!

I can select on-screen step by step set of instructions to my
destination, naming each road, but I find the spoken instructions are
easier and safer to use..
