Rob brought me his contractors book of paint colors. I need to pick
an off-white. There has to be at least 200 of them! I've spent an
hour with them fanned out and looking in the natural light, the living
room light, the hall light, comparing them to the furniture, the rug,
the drapes and I am as confused now as I was when I started. I pick a
color, then change my mind. How does Cultured Pearl sound?

I once suggested to Mickey that we pain the walls and ceilings black and
get black carpets. That way she wouldn't have to clean anything, nobody
would see any dirt (unless you spilled flour in the living room. LOL

LOL! There actually is one called white wool, but it has a pinkish
cast to it. Weird!

Weird indeed, ewe would expect ochre, from the oil, or maybe greenish, from
rolling on the grass...
I am going to paint the bedroom screaming sky blue. Probably a mistake, it's a
north room and we may freeze our tushes off, but we like the color. Also toying
with the idea of scumbling in some cloud forms, hence the skim coat of joint
compound which (Oh, pleeezzze!) will hopefully finsih in forseeable future.
Oh, well, keeps us off the macadam and out of the byres..

Did you have trouble picking it? I changed my mind again and instead
of Cultured Pearl I picked Pacer White. Not as pretty a name. <g>
And I handed the 1000 colors back to Rob and said "go now before I
change my mind again!" LOL!

well not all by itself, of course, ewe have to plan the strokes a little, making
roundish mounds and sweeps instead of neat flatnesses. Then when ewe actually
apply the paint, wet the wall first with water & use (dare I say it...) lamb's
wool pads...(gasp!) or at any rate roughly wadded rags instead of a smooth
roller. I have used the technique successfully in miniature, remains to be seen

I find that the only way to find out is, as they say, 'suck it and see' bung
it on the wall then see how it looks. Isn't that the way all you ladies do
the deciding? Is mine the only one to do it that way?

Ah! I understand! It's going to be textured so it looks like clouds,
but you aren't actually going to be painting white clouds on the wall.
<g> It would be pretty though if you could find a cloud border.
OTOH at $10 a roll for those things....

Good luck!

My car is pearl color.....imagine it on a big wall Dalin....if it has a
luster you might not want that......not an easy job.
We almost drove a painter crazy on a custom home site where I worked. Lady
had left the painter a note saying she wanted the room he had painted the
day before a half a shade lighter.....He came stomping into the office
hollering will somebody tell me what a half a shade is!!! We stopped doing
custom colors after that.....most our homes out here come in Swiss Coffee
when completed.

No, it doesn't have any luster, it's just plain off-white and the
paint companies just like to give their paints strange names I guess.
<g> Actually when they mix them they go by numbers. I wonder how
many people don't pick a color because they don't like the name?

That's a funny story, I too wonder what a half shade lighter is.
Although I believe today on the paint chips I saw whites that were an
1/8th of a shade lighter than the one next to it.

I'm not sure I've ever seen a pearl colored car. It sounds pretty.

I hope you like the color you pick....Tile, also, is ordered by number.
That's why when a buyer comes in the office and says that's not the tile I
ordered that they are installing...It's a nightmare for me, because all we
have on the spec sheet is the number....
Pearl and white cars are best out here.....I've had white twice, so I like
the sheen of the pearl.
1/8th of a shade....don't mention it to the painter, ok?

When I was a child one of my aunts crocheted big, round, beautiful
tablecloths. She started with a small strawberry-like shape in the first
row, then each succeeding row of shapes got larger and larger. The color
was "ecru," a sort of brownish white, and it was my first experience with
the myriad of "off white" colors. For that reason every time I think of
"off white" the first color that comes to mind is 'ecru." Strange how
things like that stick in the mind.

Saw a 1961 Pontiac convertible done in pearl. The car had been an Indy pace
car as I recall. There was a quart of paint in the trunk. Dealer said it
was for souch -up since it was a one-time custom mix- and worth $50 in 1961
dollars.

At car shows there are now numerous pearlescent custom car colors available
from both DuPont and PPG. I saw a 1940 Ford at a show a few years ago with
a pearlescent brilliant green front that changed imperceptibly to
pearlescent white at the rear of the car. Another pearlescent/metallic
paint now available is called "chrome illusion." It looks like a hologram,
changing colors depending on the lighting and angle of view. I saw a car at
a show this spring that was at once copper and purple. Very attractive, and
very, very, expensive.

That sounds cool! My Toyota is Mystic Teal. It is dark blue, greenish
blue, or black, depending on light. My son has a light blue Toyota.
When he saw mine he said, "I thought *my* car was a pretty shade of
blue!" He will be buying a new car soon, and is determined that it will
be Mystic Teal. I love the color, but it wasn't what I wanted
originally. I was looking for one of the bronze shades, because they
show dirt (and cat paw prints) so much less. However, this is what was
available, and I'm happy with it.

Yes, I occasionally see such cars, and I like the coloring a lot.
I once heard it was wise to get a little paint if it was an

the Mystic Teal sounds awfully nice and a strong color too, perhaps next time we
can try for that. The only greenish they had at the dealer was muddy, and we
were kind of in a hurry because the old car was going wonky and he has to drive
so far every day. We test-drove a beautiful orangey/copper SUV type, but the
shocks sucked. Then we looked at a magenta/shifty red sort of compact, and hit
our heads on the liner. So that left us only the G35 (num?)models to choose
from, and they didnt have anything else with nearly as good saturation; we both
like strong colors. Didn't even find out about the color-shift effect;
(I want to say irridescence but that isnt the exact word, it's something about
splitting the bounce-light..)
until we got her home, then we were tickled purple....
(er...I presume other people also talk with their cars enough to learn gender,
fuel preferences, etc......? ;)

Val (& Little Blue Car, and Fuzzees, and all, and all....)
sigh; I am surrounded...

No, it's because paints and other spray materials are becoming increasingly
toxic and the EPA is increasing the safety regulations about employees using
them, especially for extended periods. Full body suits and respirators are
becoming commonplace, as are specially ventilated paint booths with very
detailed disposal methods for the empty cans, coupled with fairly heavy
fines for violators. Read the label on any finishing material you use and
follow the ventilation instructions. Some are really toxic.
