I have two halves taped together, ready to be glued. Top is glued.
First half messy, second half on the right much better.

I'm a little behind you. The masking tape was old and too sticky. My
second half worked much better. I almost feel like doing the first
half over, but I don't have any more CDs. What kind of glue are you
using?

I also noticed the little edges around the inside circle, well some
are colored. The old CDs were clear colored. If I make another I
will pick CDs with clear inside circles. But this will be nice when
it's done.

When you finish, probably before I do, can you put up a picture?

Mick was working on his second one too, but he hasn't posted in
several days. I hope everything is ok with them.

If I ever make another I'm going to use a glue gun. I think it would
be neater and easier.

Happy night in those mountains Sue and Stan. Getting colder now?

If I ever do get it done! I peeled off the tape on the first half and
the backing on the CD came off too leaving a "hole" of light on the
front side. Grrrr It was old masking tape and too sticky.

Stink, what some of us are doing is making a CD glitter ball in honor
of our Jim Everman who died. It was he who first came up with the
idea and put the "how to" on his website.

http://webusers.anet-stl.com/~everman/gltrbal.html

I made one years ago and hung it off my back deck. You will see it at
the bottom of his site. When the sun hits it and a breeze sets it to
spinning it throws off all the colors of the rainbow. Some are
blinding. It is really pretty. Someone got the idea of hanging them
all over the world by the members of this and the afpf group and Joy I
believe was going to send Jim's daughter a list of where they all are.

Well, no. I have an achy neck since I was in an auto accident when I

learn to ignore until the weather attacks. That can make it pretty

When I started the second half again all I had was aol CDs and they
are all a dark blue on the inside. I would have preferred light
colors. And some of the inner rings are colored and show on the
outside. On Jim's example they were all clear plastic in the middle.
David is going to save CDs for me so I can start a THIRD one. But I
hope to finish the second tomorrow or the next day except for letting
it sit overnight to harden.

I had both halves taped and glued. This morning I took off the tape. One
of the CDs I used didn't have any printing on the opposite side, and someone
had used a Sharpee to mark one side. I put the other side on the outside of
the ball, meaning the tape was on the side that was written on. The silver
peeled off with the tape, so I have to replace that CD. I tested packing
tape on a CD I'm not using, and it didn't take off the silver, so that's
what I'll use when I have to put tape on the outside to tape the two halves
together.

Same thing happened to me Joy after I had the half all glued together.
I had to start over because the CD that lost the backing was the one
all the others were taped to. :-(

I have both parts taped together now and glued. I'll remove the tape
tomorrow and pray that the silver doesn't come off. If I can wait
that long! The longer the tape stays on I think the harder it is to
get off.

That's the same one the silver came off of on mine. However, I was able to
get it off without completely disassembling the half. Two of the joints
hadn't glued properly, so I replaced the middle one and re-glued those
joints at the same time. I'll peel off the tape tomorrow and see what
happens. The other half came out just fine. Of course, I suspect that
putting the two halves together and then peeling off the tape are the
hardest parts of all.

Incidentally, after buying a protractor, which wasn't anything like the one
I had when I took geometry, I discovered it was too big and couldn't figure
out how to use it, so I just eyeballed it.

You know, I don't think it really makes any difference. I was so
exact on this one, and yet still when I taped the top half to the
bottom half I had a couple of CDs slightly overlapping others. Who
can see from a distance? Mine is ready tomorrow to have the tape
removed and it will be done. Providing the tape comes off without any
silver backing. If it doesn't I'm going to scream because I don't
have any more CDs and am running out of glue.

If Jim could see us I imagine he would be laughing his head off. <g>

Regarding the tape removing the silver backing. Couldn't you use
acrylic paint of silver glitter to fill in the spots where the tape
pulled the backing off? Then you could dab the paint in a pattern
around the ball. Jeanette

Use new 3/8" masking tape, don't stick it too tight and don't get any
glue on it where you have to pull the tape hard to get it off the
glue.

Well, when you put each half together, the tape is (or should be) on the
side that has the printing on it, which will be inside the ball. So it
isn't a problem. I tried clear packing tape on an extra CD and it didn't
peel, so I can use that for the rest. However, I can't figure out how I can
tape it and glue it to put the two halves together. I can't put the tape on
the inside, obviously, and if I tape the joints, how do I get the glue on?

Stan taped it on the outside and just glued around the tape.

Yes, I saw your suggestion and will try that too. I don't
want that surface peeling off.

I'd ask how exactly you intend to bend the hanger, but it
might be a tad hard to explain.

Oh I wish I'd thought of that. Next one I make. I'm positive the
third one will be the best yet. I just have to wait until I get 12
more CDs. :-)

When you put the two halves together Joy, you have to put tape on the
outside on either side of where the CDs join together so you can put
the glue in the middle. Just as Jim did on the inside, my suggestion
is to put a half strip of tape on either side of each CD on one half,
then when you put the two together you can just pull the end of that
strip up onto the other half all the way around. Try not to have the
glue touch the tape. It is in the pulling of the tape off the glue
that makes you pull it hard and possibly strip the silver. If you go
slow and easy it won't strip off. I've made two balls and only on one
CD out if 24 did the silver come off. Of course I didn't use packing
tape I used the 3/8" masking tape. I don't know anything about
packing tape.

BTW, when I lost the silver part on the outside of the CD it was when
I was pulling the tape off on the inside, the printed side. That's
where it comes off, not on the outside I think.
