I've had good results from cortisone, but more like yours, rather than
Bob's. The first time I had it was also in my left shoulder for bursitis.
My doctor had said the bursitis was caused by calcium spurs. Getting the
shot was horrendous - first the punching around to find the spot that hurt
worst, then sticking that gigantic needle right into that sorest spot.
However, as you say, the results were great. A year or so later, the
shoulder did start hurting again. When I was anesthetized for minor
surgery, I asked that they stick the needle in my right arm, since pulling
the left arm out straight hurt. They did that, but they most have moved
that left arm some way while I was out. When I woke up, the shoulder hurt
like crazy. That lasted for two days; then the pain went away, and it has
never come back. My theory is that my doctor was right, and the pain was
caused by bone spurs. I suspect that while I was out they yanked that arm
around in some way that broke those spurs loose.
A couple of years ago, I had a cortisone shot in my wrist for tentinitis.
After a number of months the pain came back, and my doctor sent me to a
wrist specialist. The specialist said I could have one more cortisone shot,
but the next time the pain came back I'd need surgery. So far it hasn't
come back. I think it's been at least a year and a half since that shot.
