For some months I've had considerable joint and muscle pain, like
fibromyalgia and arthritis combined, which was especially severe in my
right shoulder. My GP prescribed first an X-ray then an MRI. A visit
to an orthopedic surgeon followed. The surgeon diagnosed the problem as
a muscle tear with no arthritic damage of consequence. He gave me a
cortisone shot in my shoulder-about what I expected- as a localized pain
reliever.

What i did NOT expect was something else altogether. Before I got out
of the building I felt the effects of the shot- all over! I started
feeling better immediately, and by the next day my muscle and joint
pains had almost totally vanished. That was ten days ago and I am now
"loose as a goose," as the saying goes. I had no idea cortisone had
that general an effect. If this is what baseball players took I can
hardly blame them. Meanwhile, I feel like I could run a marathon, better
than I have felt in months.

Maybe you will be more respectful to others as individuals and to the group
as a whole. Until the shot wears off.

I am responding in kind to Republican excesses and absurd policies. The
better I feel the more aggressive toward them I am likely to become. I
am arguing policies, and only against individual
Republicans/conservatives when they attack individual liberals and
Democrats. Passivity is no way to deal with bullies.

Freaking drug addict liberal. Can you say placebo effect or psychosomatic
reaction?

A few years ago I had a terrible itchy rash, never did figure out what cause
it. Got the oral cortisone and felt wonderful for a few days. Too bad you
can't take it indefinitely but it has some pretty bad side effects on a long
term basis.

About 10 years ago the doc gave me a cortisone shot for bursitis - looongest
needle I ever saw straight down into the top of my left shoulder - and it
really did the trick, no trouble since .. sadly, I don't remember the
effects your describe. Arthritis in my right knee flared up a few months ago
and the doc gave me a shot of Synvisc to lube it .. I asked why not
cortisone and he said let's try this first. So far, so good.

I seem to remember that long ago the needles were both long, large and
painful. The shot I got was with a very small needle. I was having an
interesting conversation with my 2d gen hispanic surgeon and I didn't
even notice when the needle went in. I'm still amazed at the wonderful
general effect the shot is having. I think this discussion might be
helpful to other old folks in this newsgroup who may also be suffering
from joint and muscle pain.

I've had good results from cortisone, but more like yours, rather than
Bob's. The first time I had it was also in my left shoulder for bursitis.
My doctor had said the bursitis was caused by calcium spurs. Getting the
shot was horrendous - first the punching around to find the spot that hurt
worst, then sticking that gigantic needle right into that sorest spot.
However, as you say, the results were great. A year or so later, the
shoulder did start hurting again. When I was anesthetized for minor
surgery, I asked that they stick the needle in my right arm, since pulling
the left arm out straight hurt. They did that, but they most have moved
that left arm some way while I was out. When I woke up, the shoulder hurt
like crazy. That lasted for two days; then the pain went away, and it has
never come back. My theory is that my doctor was right, and the pain was
caused by bone spurs. I suspect that while I was out they yanked that arm
around in some way that broke those spurs loose.

A couple of years ago, I had a cortisone shot in my wrist for tentinitis.
After a number of months the pain came back, and my doctor sent me to a
wrist specialist. The specialist said I could have one more cortisone shot,
but the next time the pain came back I'd need surgery. So far it hasn't
come back. I think it's been at least a year and a half since that shot.

Re my bursitis - my doctor said it was probably brought on from lifting my
mother (she had ALZ, I cared for her at home), and he was excellent giving
the shot, really knew what he was doing .. after I saw him kind of trying to
hide the needle, I looked away, and in the time it took me to say 'okay, I'm
just going to look at this wall and think of England', it was over .. hardly
felt a thing.
