So I went to my first private lesson with this woman today.
http://reiner-art.com/gallery/349100/
Just as I expected In a few months I will have the tools to follow my
dream and am much happier. I feel like emailing my old professor at
William and Mary and asking him why he didn't teach us correctly!!! I am
going to get a great education. I was so lucky to stumble onto the
correct path. Painting is not that much different than combining
sculpture and drawing. I'm on cloud nine! D.

really? Sculpture is how I got side-tracked in art school. I meant to go
for painting and after 2 years of life drawing I got hooked on
sculpture. Is your work somewhere I can see? d.

I wonder why that is? You spend all that time in the classroom learning
the way things are to be then the real world slaps you in the face. If
you are lucky you find a mentor quick. Someone who works in the real
world and teaches you how things are. Sometimes the formal education
proves useful, the books make great paperweights, but the practical
education ends up being the one that brings the most reward.

These are really great. I loved the food. Is this fired clay? in a kiln?
I'm interested in the process. How large are they. I especially loved
the marzipan. what did you put on top? here are some of my ceramics..we
can talk shop. The other stuff is not ceramics obviously but for fabric
design. The frames are a little annoying but just click on the
thumbnails and you should manage. I really need to have my website
redone but I don't make the time. d. www.deniseford.com

Beautiful work both of you! I am constantly amazed at your miniatures Val,
and always love to see them...I make miniature quilt wall hangings, but not
that small. Have you gone blind yet?

And Denise, you are another talented lady...loved your colorful pretty
plates, have saved your site for more later. Good luck with your new
teacher, I'm glad you like her.

A childhood friend of mine grew up to be a great painter, also sells her art
to famous people:

I do some paper sculpture and love it. But it sure makes a mess and the
kitchen is the only place right now I can work. I have always wanted to be a
watercolorist and can do some cent paintings but nothing to light the world
on fire.
My drawing definitely was affected by my watercolor classes. I learned so
much about shading and that was such a boost to me. Sometimes,I add some
watercolor on my drawings. A lot of times,I will uses diluted black water
color and paint just the highlights of my pictures. It sure makes them look
wonderful. I will continue to use graphite as my main source of art.
Portraits are a little hard for me but I LOVE to draw animals.

Well, you sure picked a good teacher. I looked at her work and it right up
my alley, so to speak. I wish you all the best in your "new" career. Just
remember this word. "Practice, practice, practice". You are on the way and
the best to you.

Thank you! Period food was my specialty. Scale is mostly 1 inch to the
foot, so the boar's head for instance is on a commercial plate just about 1
and 1/4 inch in diameter. I have made some as small as 3 ft to the inch; the
peas nearly drove me sane; but unfortunately most back-up pieces were lost
in a mailing. Fortunately the original client still has his.
Yes, they are fired, but are low-fire, 'oven' clays. Process is mostly
straight modeling, clay mixed to a basic color for the food in question,
then details, glazes, etc. added after firing.
The marzipan 'sugar' is ground glass. Is sold as a stengthener for plaster
casting, but refracts very like real sugar and does not have the tedious
habit of attracting creepy-crawlies.

Janie, dont you have some pix of your painted garden? That is such an
unusual vista (besides showing where ewer little pointed head is at, off

you know you can by little kilns that plug into an ordinary outlet which
would allow you to fire to a higher cone so they wouldn't break as
easily. Are you in the U.S? You do not need 220 for these kilns. I think
they are lovely!!d.

Well, if it is keeping from going senile I wonder why I started.
Truthfully these games are full of very young players and sometimes the
results are different than yoyu would expect. They can be very childish
at times and very mature at others. I wish on the other hand that the
time was spent in something more rewarding. Painting is for me
something that is done with a roller and tray though once I thought
much differently.
