In Australia we have this quaint custom where trusty matrons who frequent
such mobs as the CWA <Country Womens Association> ...or the Red Cross....or
whatever....post newspaper advertisements six months prior, 'Claiming the
Date' of a proposed money raising event, usually a ball...... competition
charities are meant to avoid that date for their own functions, and the
ordinary community folk are meant to write those dates in their diaries to
keep it free....so....without ado...I hereby Claim the Date of 6 June 2002
for a gathering and BBQ on my new patio!! I shall provide the Pavlova and
the landscaper will bring the Schnapper for the barbie!! Let's Rock This Old
Town!!
I am assured the work will be finished for my birthday, so ...roll on
Thursday!!
Di<~~~~in party mode!
I just remembered..it is the middle of winter...bring a jumper!! :)

Di, I would love to come, and help you celebrate your birthday and your
newly laid lawn...not to mention the landscaping....(?)
Thankfully the weather in Britain has taken a turn for the better. We
are currently enjoying even better temperatures than you, so I must
decline. We are unlikely to have another couple of days like this for
the rest of the year.
I am however proposing a visit to OZ in ****** 2003 and hope to make the
trip to Adelaide after I have outstayed my welcome in Perth...LOL...Do
you think I can Claim the Date.....How about the second week in *******
2003 or there abouts....perhaps I could persuade a few others to join
us....
Bobbie:-)

Short notice for those of us who live far away. Sniff. And you'd
better not rely on that landscaper to bring the main course.

Well, Di, as you may recall, I wanted a natural-looking wooded area
and the landscape designer, after many months and discussions of
things, some of which we agreed upon, came up with her final design,
which was a flower bed. Therefore, I would expect nothing else from
YOUR landscaper.

Loes may ask us to help her do the washing-up, but that we won't do!! I hope she

How would America call a woolly jumper?
In Dutch the word jumper has been imported for those very thin things.
Usually pink or lightblue. A proper jumper is called trui. Nobody here can
pronounce that. Except maybe Graham. And the Norwegians - they do have odd
sounds too ............

I always thought that a wooly jumper was what you got if you crossed a sheep with a
kangaroo, but I could be wrong.

JUmper in Norwegian was imported from English - many , many years ago. In
Norwegian it is either knitted or crochet work.
We do not pronounce it in the English way though :-)

Okay, that's a sweater here.... Still wondering about how the
difference evolved since people have probably been wearing sweaters
for quite a while. Now my alleged mind skips to a question: when did
people start knitting?

So you have adapted the non-USian usage of the word. I wonder, then,
when that word dates to? Ah, let me drag out the OED....

Jumper
1. A kind of loose outer jacket or shirt reaching to the hips, made of
canvas, serge, coarse linen, etc., and worn by sailors, truckmen,
etc.; also any upper garment of similar shape, e.g., a hooded fur
jacket worn by Eskimos.

Mentioned as early as 1853.

Now THAT sounds like a jacket, and the last mentioned seems to be a
parka.

No more time right now.

I guess you mean historically speaking?

In Norway, we've known this techinque since the 14th century according to
history books about this craft.

Authors: Kjellberg, Anne / Gravjord, Ingebjørg /
Rosander, Gerd Aarsland / Svendsen, Anne-Lise
Title: _Strikking i Norge_
Maybe they started even earlier in other countries, I've read about Egyptian
knitting, for example. But I can't remember any dates.
The first way to knit must have been finger-knitting.

If you meant people here, I started knitting when I was four, and when I was 6 I
knitted my first pair of stockings with 5 needles : they were yellow and was I
proud of myself?!!

Twin sets. Now I have run into those in my reading and had always
imagined them to be skirts and some kind of matching top. So, it is a
cardigan and a jumper. That is hard for me to picture. Now I am
wondering is this a button-up sweater over something of the same
material that pulls on?

I am getting more and more confused. I think I wil go get my daughter
up instead of pondering this more right now.

That's what my dictionary says too, so the use of 'jumper' the way we think of
it must have been before that in England.

Clever!
It is, I think the worst trauma in my life. I was just six, had to knit a doll's
scarf, blue cooton it was, and produced the most beautiful bit of handwork in my
life. When the nun-teacher inspected it, there was nothing good about it. I was to
go home and tell my mother and sisters to teach me. Especially the last thing was
humiliating. I never told them.

Oh that's so sad!
I've always loved handicraft. My mother used to be very, very good and she
enjoyed teaching us. When I was four, my maternal grannie gave me a little kit
for girls, with tiny needles and different coloured wool. I was sooo happy, I
still have those needles.
So I started knitting and have loved it ever since. Funny thing is that my
eldest sister has never liked it, my youngest sister is very clever too. I think
it's a kind of thing that you either like or not.

No. I just said v-neck because it is quite common, and to show that
there is no collar. It could be a scoop neck, or square, or whatever
would fit over a blouse with a collar comfortably. Usually they do not
have high jewel necks, unless they were meant to go with a turtleneck
sweater. You know what we call a jumper .

Oh, so do ours, Di. I just didn't quite know what a jumper was. Now I
see that it is a pullover. We had twin sweater sets, and wore pearls
with them, when I was in high school. I suppose ours were the same as
yours. Blake

Our cardigans button up the front Blake... Di.....:)

A jumper is what you call a sweater I believe.... usually woollen. I

Oh, I had forgotten about that. The top half of the navy uniform (WWII)
was called a jumper. It hung down and hid the however many buttons on
the trousers. It was supposed to be easy to skin out of in case they
fell overboard or the ship sank. (pleasant thought.) Blake

JUmper in Norwegian was imported from English - many , many years ago.
In Norwegian it is either knitted or crochet work. We do not pronounce
it in the English way though :-) Kelly
So you have adapted the non-USian usage of the word. I wonder, then,
when that word dates to? Ah, let me drag out the OED....
Jumper
1. A kind of loose outer jacket or shirt reaching to the hips, made of
canvas, serge, coarse linen, etc., and worn by sailors, truckmen, etc.;
also any upper garment of similar shape, e.g., a hooded fur jacket worn
by Eskimos.
Mentioned as early as 1853.
Now THAT sounds like a jacket, and the last mentioned seems to be a
parka.
No more time right now.

Is a jumper always without sleeves? Because we would call that a
sweater vest. A pullover usually means heavy wool with long sleeves.

Look in your chest of drawers for a woolly vest with sleeves that you
