I just had one of 'those' weeks. I finished up my
office temp assignment, and then the temp agency said
to go away. I had worked very hard, but the agency
does not want me anymore. On the other hand, at the
arts & crafts show, I sold a painting. Just a little
something to cheer me up. I only WISH art was profitable
for me. It is not.

always that way. Not saying you lose your temper just that you are both
artistic. She just finished a huge window size picture of a Blue Heron. She

When my mother-in-law gave up her home and moved to an assisted
retirement home she asked me if there was anything I would like and I
chose that picture. And it hangs in our family room now on the wall.
Artists tend not to advertise, but it really is a competitive field so
what's wrong with a little ad in the paper? If you do landscapes, how
about painting people's gardens that they are so proud of?

BTW, if the temp agancy was doing a land office business, they would
have hung onto you for dear life. I keep hearing bad news from small
businessmen. They say nobody has any money, so they aren't spending.

Thank you to all of you for your kind replies and suggestions. Yes, I
do sell about 6-8 small paintings per year, at outdoor sales. Actually,
I have done some house and church portraits for people. Not many, though.
For one thing, around my area, men are thought of as artists, not women.
I hear it often. I hate to complain, but that bugs me. Also, the economy
is not good anywhere lately. Maybe I will try to advertise more in the
future.

Now I forget, is any of your work online? Did you answer the q re
oil vs watercolor? Do you work from photos?
BTW, when I first read you post, I thought your temp job had
ended, on rereading, I see the temp agency cut you. I hope
there's another agency for you to work out of.

Congratulations on selling a painting! :-) It's not an easy feat
considering the competition, especially these days when people are getting
tighter with their money. Paintings are hardly a necessity for the average
consumer so selling even one is a good indication your work is marketable. I
smiled when I read your comments regarding male artists. If that is the
perception in your area perhaps you could see the prejudice more or less, a
challenge. :)
Some galleries are open to special exhibitions where they will present works
for a limited period of time. You would first need to gather a few artists
who were willing to participate in a group show, of course. Check out art
groups or clubs in your area that might have members willing to join in...
Choose a catchy name for the group ("Wet Paint" was ours), invite -everyone-
you know to the opening reception, price wisely, and be willing to help the
gallery hang works, clean up afterwards, etc. It's a fabulous way to get
exposure and sell paintings.
Best of luck in the job market. Perhaps one of your local art galleries or
museums might be in need of your skills and, ultimately, represent your
artwork.

Yes, I mostly do watercolors. I paint in the den room of my house.
I guess I still have my website on Yahoo under the title of ArtByMLH.
No traffic there, though. Anyway, yes, the temp agency cut me. Oh,
what a time! I have some large bills coming in this winter. Last
winter there was no heat in my house because my central heating unit
died. This year, I was going to replace it. Instead, I have large
doctor bill to pay. Also house insurance all at one time, and house
taxes all at one time. Also my car is about to fall apart (I've been
warned). The only thing I really need is income to keep up with the
things that I do have (such as some insurance). What a rant this is!
Sorry, most of my relatives are deceased. I don't have anyone to
tell even Good news. Sorry. I will shut up now.
