There was a poetry contest in the newspaper. All schoolchildren were
encouraged to enter an original poem. A lot of entries were printed
before the final winner's poem, and all sounded very original. The poem
that won was one I had memorized in childhood, had been published before
in a book, and had been recited in school. The judges should have
known. I wrote the newspaper a letter and cited the original, and said
I thought that was unfair to all the other children who had entered. I
got a letter back saying that it is hard to tell what is and what is not
original. But the contest was never repeated in subsequent years, to my
knowledge. And the newspaper adopted a policy of not printing any
poems.
