Scope for imagination here. I'm one of those challenge setters who likes to
leave room for maneouvre.
2,500 words. I want to walk away from the story thinking it's finished. I
don't want the arty, disconnected ideas we've had in a couple of challenges
this year. I want you to tell me a tale. Beginning, middle, end.
Take the first letter of your own maiden name (if female) or your mother's
maiden name (if you're male) and click the appropriate link below.

Your story should start with your character in or observing the scene in
that painting. You can update the scene to modern times by all means
(clothing etc.).
During the course of the story, your character should be in or observe the
events in one of the other paintings listed - any one.
That's for your first entry. You can have three. For subsequent entries ANY
two pictures can be used - one to start, one to include. No other rules.
Don't tell me what pictures you are using. One of the ways I'll be judging
is whether I can recognise the two paintings from your description alone.
There'll be an overall winner and a "first entry" winner - the entry in
which you use the maiden name. You can cheat of course - only you will know
if you do - and that should be more than enough to stop you.
Hope you enjoy it.

This from the guy whose first challenge was full of specific words that
had to be included? Hmmm?

But it's nice confusing you with a mixed up jumble of images.

What about unmarried women or those of us who didn't change our names
when we got married? I guess my maiden name's my name. Okay.
> Hope you enjoy it.
Sounds like fun, Alaric. Now, let me go see what scene you've thrown me into.

Anyhow, I have a small problem with this challenge. My mother and I have
not been on speaking terms for years. I called her after I saw this
challenge and asked her what her maiden name was. Although somewhat cartoon
like, she responded
"#!!*?$&!!$%!" And then she hung up.
So, I don't know which picture to look at. Any thoughts?

Nice one, mate. I like this idea a lot.

I did and got some poor Manchester City supporter screaming his head off at
another loss. I wanted a nice little talking animal story to ease me back
in. What are you going to do about it?
Anyways. ain't you supposed to be half way up the Congo River in a teapot?

I hope you get lucky and don't get "The Scream." I'd hate to do that.
When I say observing the scene in the painting, you can't get away with
having the character looking at the painting itself. The scene must be
transferred to reality.

Are you married, Andrew? If so, take your wife's maiden name? If not, ring a
married lady friend at random and ask for it - er - the maiden name.
AND MAKE UP WITH YOUR MOTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! <g>

Heh! one thing - the characters have to be *in* or observing the *scene*,
right - not the painting itself? So I couldn't have a protag in the Louvre,
looking at the scene as painted...?

Hope not. Otherwise my computer's gone doolalley.
Course, you CAN do a talking animal story. I wouldn't want to stop you.
Course I wouldn't. Maybe it'll get a mention in the January challenge.

Off till January. I can live with that.
It's my good luck. I'm looking forward to what you talented folk make of it.

By the way, Mom says 'hi." (I didn't know you two had met.) She said to
ask you if you were missing a blue sock and a pocket comb.
Is there something funny I going on here? Mom's almost 80.

Oh, I'd love to have "The Scream". It's my son's favorite painting. I'm
lucky I don't have to go with my mother's maiden name; otherwise, I'd be
writing about a man standing next to his wife while holding a pitchfork.
-Sue
Well, speaking as one who has the Scream,
"Yuuuuuuuuaaaaaaaaaaaaagggggghhhhhhh!!!"
<sniff>
You're not supposed to tell him. Shhhh.
The Scream is great. I can think of three or four different stories to
go with it. I'll have to get mine done fast, so I can write a Scream
one. :)
He knows my last name, so I guess he knows which one I got. Oh well.
I'm dull witted, Alaric. I haven't clicked on any of the links yet, but,
let's say, there was a painting of a meadow. Do you want the character
actually in the meadow?
Like:
The sun was hot as it beat down on my shoulders, but I didn't care. I was
lost in the beauty; daisies-hundreds of daisies-dotted the landscape, and
somewhere, I could hear running water.
That type of thing?
So, you would want the story to start somewhere that's in the painting that
we choose?
Am I reading this right?
Like I said, I'm dull-witted.
Sorry.

Very cool, Alaric. Should be fun. Reminds me of your history
challenge. The time you put into these is one thing that makes this
group rock.
My painting will definitely be a challenge, given its content and the
artist, and how the hell to leap to one of the others!!!
I dicked on Derrick's challenge. Don't know why I couldn't produce
anything more than two pages, especially given it had so much room for
the writer's own direction.
Yielded some good reads, though.

OKay so you want a beginning, middle, and end but in which order?

I did a drawing of it long ago, but changed it into a self-portrait.
Reminds me how long its been since I've been to a gallery. Some of these
paintings are here in Chicago. I may just have to go make a trip.

Yes.
But you'll be relieved to know it's nothing to do with the blue sock.

Hello,
No doubt you already know this, but I'll mention it because otherwise
you've used noted classics. The link above isn't an original Dali; it's an
"Homage to Salvador Dali" created with Bryce 4 and Poser 3. I'm am (of
course!) a fan of the surrealists.
Anyways thanks for the challenge. I hope to get something together. :-)

Too late to change, damn it.
Can't believe you've been gone this long and don't have something new
