http://www.runnersworld.com/article/printer/1,7124,s6-243-410--13221-0,00.html

from the article:

Tell me about a memorable run during the campaign that really stands
out.

Oh, my gosh, the one that really stands out I'm embarrassed to death
to repeat. I went for a run at John McCain's ranch a couple of days
before the debate with Joe Biden. My favorite thing in the world is to
run on hot, dusty roads. I don't get enough of that in Alaska, so I
was in heaven. And there were plenty of hills, so I knew my thighs
were going to just throb and my lungs were going to burn, and that's
what I crave.

I like running alone, and having the Secret Service with me added a
little bit of pressure. I'm thinking I gotta have good form and can't
be hyperventilating and can't be showing too much pain, and that adds
a little more pressure on you as you're trying to be out there
enjoying your run. Then I fell coming down a hill and was so stinkin'
embarrassed that a golf cart full of Secret Service guys had to pull
up beside me. My hands just got torn up and I was dripping blood. In
the debate you could see a big fat ugly Band-Aid on my right hand. I
have a nice war wound now as a reminder of that fall in the palm of my
right hand. For much of the campaign, shaking hands was a little bit
painful.

I don't remember news reports about it.

Heck no! I made those guys swear to secrecy. And I probably should
have gotten a couple stitches. But I was insisting with these guys,
"Absolutely not, let's just wash it out." I appreciated how much care
they took to help me out. So anyway, I have a little scar on my hand,
and I've seen a couple of pictures from the debate or of me waving to
someone on the campaign trail with that Band-Aid and I think, nobody
else knows about it.

So the Secret Service guys kept silent?

They did! And I have this great respect for them that they've kept
silent all these months later.

ehh.....so you looked at all of them huh.

I figured that last one might elicit some arched eyebrows. Some of the
quotes attached to the pics are pretty humorous. I particularly like,
"sweat is my sanity". The <thighs.....throbbing> image was kind of
racy too.

and, "I used to joke around with John McCain during the campaign about
coming jogging with me. And once I asked him what his favorite
exercise was, and he said, 'I go wading.' ...."

It elicited a dry heafe for me.

And of course she had to drag her poor kid into the photos just to be on the
safe side.

What a total deadshit that woman is.

The Palin-hate phenomenon is a truly incendiary one. I think she's
never really been forgiven for that sarcastic bitch-slapping she gave
Obama in her nomination speech. The shocked Obama-loving media came
down on her like a ton of bricks from every direction and it really
has never stopped ever since. Some folks are still recoiling in horror
from the mere fact of her existence. C'mon; Obama-Biden won. All's
well with your world. Just try and enjoy the leg shots.

Eh, typo. Meant to write "dry heave". And no, not related. To be honest
with you, middle aged women with fat ankles and plump thighs just dont do it
for me. I like a woman with a fine cut of leg and bit of style about them.
Of course YMMV.

> And of course she had to drag her poor kid into the photos just to be on
> the

>> What a total deadshit that woman is.

>The Palin-hate phenomenon is a truly incendiary one.

Hardly.

Most people who see a person berating others for not adhering to the "family
values" they preach, and then it transpires that that person feels that her
own family is exempt from those "family values" will instantly characterize
the person as a hypocrite, and rightly so.

> I think she's never really been forgiven for that sarcastic bitch-slapping
> she gave
>Obama in her nomination speech.

That is an absurd statement. In my case, that speech is the furthest thing
from my mind and in fact your mention of it is the first time Ive even given
it a second thought. Reason being it was hardly worthy of more than a
moment's thought in the first place.

BUT.........what I do object to in her political stumping is her crossing
the country and seeking to divide the people based on her personal and
myopic judgment of "real Americans" versus the rest. That is divisive,
arrogant, uninformed, elitist and just plain stupid Sure it might appeal to
the Joe the Dumbers of this world, but she seriously "missunderestimated"
the American public if she thought that sort of small minded nonsense would
win her votes across the country. And as Nov 08 showed, I am 100% right in
that assessment .

She not only cheapened her own 'brand" but denigrated and smeared anyone on
the other side of her politics and people don't vote for someone as
simplistic and backward thinking as that. Its 2008/9 for crying out loud,
not 1930/40s.

So tell us please, where do you stand on her campaign style?

>The shocked Obama-loving media came down on her like a ton of bricks from
>every direction and it really
has never stopped ever since.

Oh please, that is truly pathetic. I'd say you are about the only one who
holds that view, the rest of us were simply appalled at her lack of
knowledge, preparation, aptitude and temperament for the job of VP.

You'll note there is no mention in my previous statement of her in personal
terms, rather it is a simple reflection of her aptitude for the job.

> Some folks are still recoiling in horror
>from the mere fact of her existence. C'mon; Obama-Biden won. All's
>well with your world. Just try and enjoy the leg shots.

Gee, and there I was thinking you may indeed have a salient and well thought
out point of view in regards to her professionalism and ability to do the
job of VP, instead you seem bogged down in yesterdays thinking of "us versus
them".

Oh well, you can lead a horse to water and all that.

What astonishing hypocrites and liars you loons are. Here's
what you'd just written about Palin the previous post CliffB
was responding to:

>>> What a total deadshit that woman is.

Nothing personal about that at all! :-/ LOL at you, and
your pathetically clueless, loony existence. At least you're
not alone. Washington Post online has a piece this morning
on how the loon-written, anonymous-citing Vanity Fair
article has ended up helping Palin.

http://voices.washingtonpost.com/thefix/morning-fix/070209-morning-fix-a-sarah-pal.html?hpid=topnews

I read that piece this morning when there were only a
handful of talkback posts in the comments section at
the bottom of it. But the four or five there were Loon
Nation at its best. There's no such thing as a Lonely
Loon at a Palin Derangement Syndrome gathering.

Even the rest of us can learn something from the lunacy
though. For example that Vanity Fair is still publishing.
Who'da thunk *that*, eh? And they're getting by with
literally 8-month-old recycled FOX News! Literally,
that's what it is. A few days before the election, Steve
Schm... er, and anonymous source or three within the
McCain campaign started looking towards their next
gigs and decided to run preemptive damage control on
their own incompetence by scapegoating Sarah Palin.

So they leaked anonymous made-up b.s. to FOX's
Carl Cameron. Carl reported it, and upon hearing it
Shep Smith went into his Chicken Little mode on the
spot. It was amusing to watch, and now even more
amusing to learn that Vanity Fair is so tree-huggingly
committed to saving the planet from global warming
(or cooling, or climate change, or whatever they're
calling it these days to fit the crisis to the facts) that
they're recycling 8-month-old FOX News hot air.

Apparently it was Schmitt or someone else high up in the campaign
spilling their guts to William Kristol...Kristol didn't want McCain to
win, not because of Palin, but because he knew no R was going to win
again immediately after Bush. I don't know why they won't let her
alone...can you imagine beating up on a female democrat like this?
They tried at first with Hillary but found out it failed. Palin won't
run in 2012 but will eventually run as a US Senator my prediction.

Not to Kristol, to Carl Cameron of FOX News and a few other media
people just before the election. Prior to that, in Spring or early Summer
2008, Kristol was basically the first of several people to tout Palin as
a potential McCain choice for VP.

The dynamic since just before the election is that a few unnamed
anonymous sources who worked in the McCain campaign dis
Palin, while Kristol and named people including some from within
the campaign defend her. Others also deny they were the
anonymous sources. Steve Schmidt was a prime suspect just
by process of elimination at the time, and because he fit the
profile. Kristol basically names Schmidt as one likely source
of the Vanity Fair piece.

> Palin won't run in 2012 but will eventually run as a US
> Senator my prediction.

No, I don't think she'll run for Senate now and I wouldn't
rule out 2012. She has a book scheduled to come out
next Spring and it'll sell huge. At that point I think she'll
step down as Governor and let her Lt. Gov take over so
he can run as an incumbent in November 2010 if he
wants to.

Her reasons will be that she hasn't yet decided on a run
in 2012, she'll be doing the book tour, campaigning for
Republican candidates in 2010, focusing more on national
issues and so on. So all that would detract from devoting
all of her efforts to being Governor for the remainder of
her term as well as a second term.

She could wait until 2020 to run for President and still
only be 56. If she doesn't run in 2012, I'll go out on a
limb and predict the Republican nominee is Rudy Giuliani.
I think both Palin and Huckabee would support him over
Romney in a heartbeat, and that's all Rudy would need
to win the nomination.

Exactly. Kristol is on Palin's side...or Palin is on Kristol's side,
depending how you look at it. Kristol and a bunch of other crepuscular
Reep lizards supposedly discovered and subsequently sold Palin to the
national conservative leadership as a hot thing. In hindsight Palin
may already have been positioning herself to be sold and already
looking to springboard beyond the control of this first group of
backers.

Modern conservatism is structured around cliques of power brokers,
heavyweight pundits, key party leaders and, above all, financial
backers. Triads or apparats might be a better term. The point is that
you don't have broad-based coalitions building support behind
particular candidates as the Dems do. Rather it's tight networks of
well-heeled, seasoned pros, some cooperating, some competing, looking
for puppets to recruit.

Pretty, pretty puppet, eh?

Might save her making another monumental jackass of herself on the national

Nope, and Palin doing today what I predicted she'd do in
another 6 to 8 months may even make the scenario all the
more likely.

Giuliani, Huckabee and Palin are all authentic. Romney
is the Max Headroom of the party, as inauthentic as it
gets and more slippery than his hair.

That's why you see Giuliani and his wife posing with
Palin and her husband at the Yankees game, and
Huckabee the Likeable on his weekly FOX show
interviewing guests and playing his guitar in country
music segments. They're the folks and with the folks,
while Romney and his backroom people and network
are busy behind the party scenes stabbing Palin in the
back and on their way to buying the nomination.

This doesn't make Romney a bad person. :-) Politics
is a tough business. Being a rich, inauthentic, slippery
weasel may be more a virtue than a vice on the road
to becoming President. Republicans aren't inherently
against such a candidate if they're perceived as capable
of winning.

The Pew Research poll a few weeks back has Palin at
73% favorable among Republicans, with Romney next
at 57%. Palin's favorables are even higher among some
key parts of the base, for example 80% among those
Republicans describing themselves as conservative.

So she's loved by the base and she can bring out the
crowds and raise money. People love Rudy too, and
to some extent the nice guy Huckabee. People in the
party loved Reagan. Romney, not so much.

If Palin runs, and Romney runs as expected, one of
those two will be the nominee I think. But I think it's
now no better than 50-50 that Palin runs in 2012.
If she doesn't run, I think Romney is unbeatable for
the nomination unless Palin supports one of the other
candidates. Rudy, Huckabee, or Pawlenty would
all have a decent chance of winning the nomination
over Romney if Palin supported and campaigned
for them. I think the one she'd be most likely to
support is Rudy.

Rudy was the frontrunner last time until his strategy of
abandoning the early states blew up and he couldn't win
Florida. With Palin endorsing him, I think it becomes
a race between Rudy and Romney and Rudy wins.
Huckabee did well in Iowa last time but realistically
I don't think he can see any chance of winning the
nomination in that scenario. He doesn't much care
for Romney (to understate it some say) and would I
think also endorse Rudy. Rudy would win Iowa and
quite possibly New Hampshire, and it'd be a rout after
that. Romney would get out by Florida at the latest.

If Palin doesn't run in 2012, I think she might also take
herself out of any VP nomination. Been there done
that and the job itself is kind of a joke. The next time
she runs, if she does, it'll be for President. She might
agree to some other role in a Rudy Administration.

Right now I think it's 60-40 that Obama's administration
is headed for a Carter-level meltdown, in fact possibly
worse though that's a tall order. Whoever the nominee
is for the Republicans would have a very good chance to
win in that scenario.

The rest of your analysis I mostly agree with, but Rudy is done. His
mantle as "Hero of 9/11" is gone, '08 proved that he's a very tough
sell to the religious right and there is no way for him to go back in
time to unfuck his messy personal life. And he's pushing 70 and had
cancer. He's done, finito. He might run for governor but he'll never
be a serious candidate for president again.

You have extreme blinders onto think that Obama is in trouble. But
even so you're forgetting your history. Reagan was a telegenic,
two-term governor running against a president who'd been abandonded by
half his party, dragged down by a stagnant economy and ensnared in a
hostage crisis that was virtually impossible for him to resolve. And
Carter _still_ almost won.

Leaving aside the fact that the vast majority of the nation still
blames Bush and the Reeps for our woes--and seem inclined to do so for
the forseeable future--there are no Reagans in waiting for the GOP.
None of the mooted hopefuls have the gravitas today that Reagan had in
'77.

Or as Gerald Ford said of Reagan, "He doesn't color his hair, he's
just prematurely orange."

Starting with the cancer issue first, it was prostate cancer. Not only
isn't it high fatality, most with prostate cancer end up living so long
after the diagnosis and treatment that they end up dying from other
causes.

As for age, if Rudy won in 2012 he'd be 68 when he took office in
2013. That'd be a bit younger than Reagan was (he turned 69 about
two weeks after taking office), and 4 years younger than John McCain
would have been when taking office if he'd won. Average remaining
life expectancy for a 70-year-old male would be into their late 80s,
well beyond Rudy's age even if he ran for a second term. When he
left office after 8 years he'd be 76.

As for the messy personal life and being a tough sell to the religious
right, it was an issue that he'd overcome last time enough to be the
frontrunner for an extended period. More than anything it was the
primary system being frontloaded with states he was weaker in that
sunk him. Yes that would be a problem again, which is why his
path to victory would require Palin and ideally Huckabee support,
and others too.

As for 9/11, I disagree that wouldn't resonate anymore. It doesn't
to the moveon.org crowd, but they're irrelevant to this analysis. To
others, he's America's Mayor and they remember how he handled
it. The more Obama gets used as a doormat and is in sync with
dictators like Chavez, the more it'll resonate come 2012.

Your rationale doesn't hold, so your assertion is even weaker.
You also massively underestimate the premise, which would be
the support of Palin and ideally Huckabee.

No, he's revealing himself to be a leftist ideologue more and more
every day, and an incompetent just like Carter. He's a much
better communicator than Carter so that helps him, as does the
mainstream media completely in the tank for him to date. But
as things get worse, not better, domestically and internationally
because of his policies and approach, he'll be done. Things
could turn around in spite of him, but as I said I think it looks
like 60-40 he's Carter II.

> And Carter _still_ almost won.

Good Lord check your facts it only takes a minute these days.
Reagan won 44 states and by 489-49 in the Electoral College,
and by almost 10 points. Obama's margin, which was clear
compared to the two Bush wins, pales by comparison. Just
under a million votes in total, in seven key states, made the
difference in the Electoral College.

Quite the opposite at the time. Reagan got dismissed as an
ex-actor, and a right wing nut, and a folksy know-nothing and
all the rest by the loons of the day. The impressionists would
go that route too, Bedtime for Bonzo jokes and so on, and
even after he was elected it was falling asleep at the cabinet
meetings. Carter, on the other had, was said to be one of
the smartest Presidents ever.
