At the Make Up Trade show this weekend, one of the highlights for me was being
able to watch professional artists doing demos. While there was a lot of
spectacular special effects work being done and the body painters at MAC were
painting an exceptionally beautiful boy pink, my favorite demo was at the Fred
Segal booth by a woman who works on "Friends", I think her name is Robin
Seigel, but I may have that wrong. She did a beautful, simple "make-up for
television" demo that made me want to run home and haul out all my neutral
colors! She used all Nars because each artist doing a demo at this booth used a
single line. However, you could get a feeling for which products from this line
she particulary liked and actually used.

Her model was definitely attractive but went from pretty/gawky to stunning/
beautiful while still looking like herself. It was all about enhancement. And
it was not a quick process. Robin started with the eyes. I missed the very
beginning ( argh!) but she seemed to be working from both the Pandora duo (
black/white) and the American Beauty palette (she mentioned that she loved this
palette). Very neutral eye, built up very slowly - in layers. It reminded me
that it is easier to add than to take away. And it was not a cookie cutter
design. She would put on some shadow, then look at the model and then add a
little bit more. Very blended, very soft, no strong colors. A little bit of
lining, although this was tweaked more as the make up progressed.

After the eyes were done, she applied liquid foundation using a sponge. She
used a small amount and concentrated coverage where it was needed. I realized
that I use WAY too much foundation. She then used concealer to cover up
imperfections (with a brush) and to contour. Yes! Darker and lighter concealers
were applied to contour, then blended! Applied from the tube, blended with a
sponge, I think. Malibu multiple was then used on the cheeks, then powder.
After that, she went back to add powder blush (the two colors from the Lust For
Life palette, mixed, with a comment that she loved those blushes) and more
oomph was added to the eyes and more liner - not a very dark color, a khaki
(the darker color from Calypso duo, I think) . Also individual false eyelashes.
Not just to fan out the corners but interspersed through the whole lid,
concentrated over the center to open up the eye. This made a HUGE difference.
Actresses communicate so much through their eyes and this just pulled the focus
right there. Then she applied mascara, using her finger as a lash guide -
encouraged curl, kept the false lashes aligned and de-clumped all at once.

She used a brush to do the lips from one of the palettes ( I think American
Beauty). She mentioned that while she might do a lighter lip for real life, she
tended to go a bit darker for television because it looks better. She used a
clear gloss on top of that.

As she was doing all this, she also answered questions. She said that she
doesn't always do things the same way or in the same order. Someone asked if
she always did eyes first and she said often, but not always. She does usually
build up in layers though.

As I mentioned before, this made me come home and start playing with neutrals
again. It was a BEAUTIFUL make-up, natural, yet polished. It gave me a good
idea what to shoot for next time I need photos taken. And yes, while those
girls from Friends are lovely, we would ALL look considerably lovelier with
this woman making us up. She was very talented, I thought. Her technique seemed
more about revealing beauty that imposing a set idea of beauty on a face. I
think this is really important when working on comedic actresses -- you want
them to look beautiful , but you don't want anything masklike as that would
interfere with their expressiveness.

consider this the fair notice on this event! It will be mid to later June
2003 at the same location!
They have deals on hotel rooms and air fare! Realize you can *easily* drop
200 dollars on make-up and factor in eating! ( 10 per at a sit down or so)
anyway... plan now!!!

I'm So bummed that I wasn't able to make it. It sounds like everyone had a
blast at the show and I would have LOVED to have seen the Friends makeup
artist. I always think the women on that show look amazing! Maybe next year
for me.. I'm glad that all who went enjoyed themselves!

I believe their first one was in London and according to their
website, it'll be there again:

Business Design Centre
52 Upper Street Islington
January 25 & 26, 2003
9:00am - 5:00pm

I recommend you keep checking their website for details:

I think you can also e mail them. They are really good about
responding to e mails and more than likely dates are set for next
year's shows.

I think so too!

One question: How much of the American Beauty palette
did she really use? You said for blush she used the Malibu
multiple and a combination of both blushes from the Lust for
Life palette, so she must not have used any of the blushers
in the American Beauty palette.

And you said she used shadows from the Pandora and Calypso
duos. So at most she used a lipcolor and maybe a shadow from
American Beauty. Do you recall?

I think she used all of the shadows from the American Beauty palette. The way I
wrote it was confusing because the color from the Calypso duo that she used is
in the palette. That palette also has the yellow from Tiger Lily and the soft
brown from another one -- Madrague, maybe? and one other color I don't recall.
I considered buying the palette (after watching the demo) but when I looked at
the list of colors, I found that I owned most of the eye colors in duos
already, so I just pulled out my Calypso and Tiger Lily duos ,which I haven't
used for awhile.

Also, I'm not sure exactly how she used the Pandora -- I missed the beginning
of the demo and it took me awhile to edge up close enough to hear-- but it was
out with the two palettes she was using. I think she may have been using the
white and the black to mix with other colors from the palette -- I didn't see
any harsh black or white going on. There was a gray I couldn't account for in
the palette - so I suspect Pandora was somehow involved.

She didn't use the blush from American Beauty palette at all, and now I'm not
entirely sure she used just the lips from American Beauty either. I looked up
the colors in that palette and they seemed mostly light except for Tangier. so
it may have been just tangier, or she may have mixed that with something from
the Lust for Life palette. The result was was a warm, like-your-lips but darker
color. This was definitely not a single palette look. She used one palette for
eyes (plus another duo) another for blush ( plus a multiple) and possibly both
for lips ( plus gloss). I'm not going to get peeved at myself for not being
able to do my face from a single palette ever again.
