Help preserving hair color

as possible. I have not yet shampooed my hair... So, how
long should I wait to shampoo? Should I switch to an
intensive conditioner? Should I continue using my Clairol
detangler/shine enhancer/SPF spray?
Keep in mind that my hair is midway down my back. I want to
keep it that way, or even get it longer. So if there's
anything I can do to protect my presumably now fragile hair,
I want to know!

I've colored my hair quite a few times over the years. I always tried to wait
about 48 hours before a shampoo, and with something like Castings, i used a
really gently shampoo (i used Matrix Essentials for color treated) I also used
L'Oreal ColorVive conditioner.
When i had my hair highlighted blonde, or used Feria --i upped the
conditioner with a weekly hot oil treatement. I also always used Biolage Daily
Leave in Tonic for detangling and light conditioning (i usually blow dry
straight).
I've found that with products like Castings (Natural Instinct etc) the hair
isn't left all that fragile (but obviously it is not the same as virgin hair).
So, the main "obstacle" is to keep the color true rather than worrying about
alot of breakage or dryness.
Has anyone tried that Revlon Colorlock shampoo? is it a waste of money?

I love this!!! I used to use Belle Color, then changed to Hydrience when
Consumer reports said it lasted the longest (Belle Color just didn't stay, but
I loved the product). After a year, I really wanted to go back to Belle Color
(better colors for me, easier to use, better effect). Well, I bought the Color
Stay combo (shampoo and conditioner) - they were on sale, very cheap, and I was
thrilled with the results. The Belle Color did not disappear ( I keep an eye
on this patch of gray that I have) as quickly. You're supposed to use the
Color Stay Shampoo and Conditioner for one week after you color your hair, then
you can switch to other products. The conditioner feels absolutely wonderful.
My only complaint is that the scent is somewhat boring. But that I can live
with.
So, a big recommendation from me!

My hair stylist told me that many intensive conditioners, pacs, etc. can
really "take" the color from your hair. I have found that my "color" lasts
longest using products specifically for colored hair and not general
products that say in small print OK for colored hair. I really only use
Aveda purescriptions with color in it so it deposits color and Pola simfree
for colored hair. rjudith

My hair is streaked blonde, and I use the Pola Simfree shampoo as well. It is
a wonderful shampoo for bringing abused hair back to life, and it doesn't
affect the color.

Emily, you're in school right? So the combination of Pola and Aveda might be a
bit of a stretch for your budget?
I haven't used the Pola, but I have used the Aveda and as rjudith says, it's
excellent. One option is to just buy the color-depositing conditioner, since
that is what is more effective than the Aveda color-depositing shampoo(s). I
think you can use it just once or maybe twice a week for it to be effective.
(In addition to the custom stuff, there is also the regular color-depositing
shampoos and conditioners Aveda carries, and they might be a tiny bit cheaper.)
People also have had luck I guess with the Artec stuff, but I've never found it
so I can't comment on it. Again, the conditioner alone might be an option if
you don't want to spend a great deal of money but want to preserve your color.
The Revlon stuff is colored shampoo/conditioner, not color-depositing (you can
tell the difference by what the labels say). Which isn't to say it doesn't
work for folks. Just that it it's not the same as the Aveda stuff.
It is the process of drying which helps leech color from hair, so washing it
less frequently might help as well, particularly with a Level 2 color.

Yeah, just a bit *g*. Aveda is a bit hard for me to find,
but I can do it. The price might be a bit much to swallow
tho.

Ok, that actually fits well. I have one of the Aura
shampoos, which should be milder than regular drugstore
stuff, and the price doesn't give me heart attacks. Then if
I can find color depositing conditioner :) I'll be in
business.

Good thing I don't dry my hair much. I used a level 3 color
(Clairol Hydrience), so we'll see what happens.

The Aveda Purescriptions shampoo is $10 for a 7 oz. bottle and sold only in
salons and at Aveda stores. I use this only 1 or 2 X per week and a bottle
lasts me 20 weeks. I think I pay $95 for color every 10 weeks so in
comparison the shampoo is quite reasonable. rjudith

Plus, my hair behaves better on the second day. I love the ColorVive line from
L'Oreal. It keeps my color true and shiny and smells heavenly.

I agree - although I shower every day and just use water - can not stand the
rain noise on shower caps. I have noticed that the L'Oreal ColorVive line
is the only one that advertises sun protection for hair, but have yet to try

color safe shampoos and conditioners I have used, these have held the color in
the best for me.

color. I love the sauna, and straighten my bangs everyday, so this doesn't come
as great news. Also, don't use hot water when you wash your hair, as it also
pulls out more color. Also wait at least 48, and preferably 72 hours, before
washing your hair after coloring it!
