Hi everyone,
I thought this would be the perfect place to ask you guys
this question since I trust everyone's opinions here.. And since this is the
place where I started to form my *love* for makeup, I thought you guys woould
be able to help me out.
I got two job offers-- one as a makeup artist for Versace at
Nieman Marcus in Palo Alto, CA, and one as a makeup artist at the new Sephora
store that's opening in Valley Fair in Santa Clara, CA (hello to all the bay
area afer's!!).. The thing is, the Versace position is going to be paying more,
while the Sephora position will be paying less (about a $4 difference). But,
I'd have to drive all the way to Palo Alto (I'm in San Jose-- about 35 miles..)
Sephora would be a lot closer. Both jobs will be offering benefits. Sephora
does give out bonuses quarterly, so it might makeup for the pay difference
between both jobs.
I interviewed with both managers, and both are super nice and
laid back. I could picture working for them both.. Versace attracts me since
the pay is better, it's a lot more slower paced than Sephora, and I'll get the
Nieman Marcus discount =), also don't have to wear a uniform... Sephora
attracts me because of all the access to the lines, plus I'll get to learn so
much about them. I also *love* this store so working there would be even
better so I could use my discount...

Sorry this is so long..I'm so confused here.. Hopefully you
guys can give me some advice!

Thanks, Lorie

if it were my decision, I'd probably go with Sephora, because of the
variety, and the atmosphere seems to be a more comfortable atmosphere to
me than Neiman Marcus

Hi Lorie,

First off, congratulations on two jobs offers from two prestigious
companies. That's terrific. In answer to your question, I think Sephora
would be a better career move if it gives you access to more lines and you
end up learning more. It would also look great on your resume in the future
if you decided to try another place as a makeup artist.

Good luck,

Wow, what a decision to have to make! Neiman Marcus always seemed a
little stuffy to me. I like Sephora for its variety and atmosphere.
and I have a long commute and would love to get a job closer to home.

Sephora gets my vote, but whatever you choose, congratulations on the
new job!!!!

I have a friend that worked as makeup artists for Neiman Marcus and later for
Sephora. It would all depend, I guess, on what is more important to you. If
money is more important, I would take the job that pays more. Even with the
commute, you would still probably make more with the extra $4 per hour. I have
to tell you though, my friend enjoyed the atmosphere MUCH better at Sephora and
the people working there. The working atmosphere at Neiman Marcus was VERY cut
throat and high pressure for sales.

Hope this helps with your decision

Hi there
personally I would think that Neimans would be a good choice. It is a bit
farther but their lines are high prestige ones that Sephora doesn't carry
such as Chantecaille, BB, and others. While I am in the minority, there is
the NM discount, the less frenetic pace exc on those special NM events and
other things too.... you could learn quite a bit at NM and there is
significant cache in having that name on your resume

Hi- Isn't it a nice feeling to have a choice when job hunting? Congrats.
That aside, I thought back on my working years and these are the things which would
influence me.
Commute time: I believe in living as close to a job as possible. No one's paying
you for all that "windshield time". The way gas is, it's a real consideration.
Chance for advancement: speaks for itself.
Percieved pressure, from boss and/or job requirements.. You want to be able to
leave the job when you leave it. Sleepless nights aren't worth any money.
Health insurance. I always say my Blue Cross card is my most valuable thing I own,
after the cat, of course.
Employee discounts wouldn't be that important to me - they might tend to undermine
my overall budget.

My thought is that you're going to spend a TON of money anyway, so why not go
where you'll make more. $4/hr makes a big difference & you can still shop and
learn at Sephora off-hours.

Knowing you could be making more doing the same thing somewhere else might eat
away at you.....

I vote for NM.....

Congratulations-

I can't really give advice on this since the answer would lie with *your*
priorities and not mine. I just want to say that working at Sephora would be
my dream job- if I wasn't already in a career that I love. The access to all
the lines would be the main draw and the shorter commute would be a factor, but
then again $4.00 is $4.00.

Let us know what you decide.

Although I think the most important aspect of a job is that you enjoy doing
what you're doing, like being where you are and the people you work with, $4/hr
is quite a difference in pay. If there's not a big difference in how you think
you'll feel at the two places, I'd go for the money.

>$4/hr makes a big difference

not if you live in Michigan, hehe.

under that circumstance, the $4 would be spent on gas to get 35 miles to and
from work. ;)

Congratulations! Versace is very slow paced but some of the SAs have
been working for years so you would learn a lot of tips etc. to
improve your skills. The lady at NM who sells CDLM is excellent. As
you might know you'd probably have to cover other counters too. Make
sure you know up front exactly how many hours a week you would work
since, as we all know, dept. stores like to cut back on help and have
them do more to save money for the store. Let us know your decision.

I have to chime in here. Neiman Marcus is extremely cutthroat to work for
in cosmetics. Those ladies are sharks. I have seen them in action (Tyson's
& Washington DC). You do receive commission, but you need to be very
aggressive.

Sephora may pay less & you don't get commission, but I know someone who
started out at the very bottom & is now a regional. I strongly suggest that
Sephora might be the way to go.

Do a little research and try to strike up some conversations with people at
the different stores. See what the overall vibe is. With an added commute
and possible disadvantages, the additional $$ might not seem as attractive.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for all the advice. I've been to Nieman Marcus many
times, and it's soooo slow in there.. The Versace account executive warned me
about this and told me straight out that if I was the type of person who wanted
wanted a medium to fast pace work environment, this store would not be it.
(The San Francisco store does 4x the business that the Palo Alto store does,
just to give you guys an idea..)
I'm definitely the type of person who likes to keep busy and
meet a lot of people, so Sephora might actually be a better fit for me.
They're still trying to work out a budget, and the manager was really impressed
with all of my knowledge of the lines.. (thanks to alt.fashion!) She really
wants to have me work at Sephora and is trying to work out the pay with the
regional manager.
In any case, I'll let all of you know what I end up deciding.
That way, any afer's who are in the area can come visit me.. I'd love to meet
you guys!

As a former Macy's employee, I know an employee discount can be pretty seductive.
However, if you can discipline yourself and your spending, it's a boon. Not only do
you have the discount, you work in the store and know when things are going to hit the
rock bottom price. I have a huge ivory silk wrap that I bought for just under $8.00,
etc.

The big issue for me would be the commute. $4.00/hour would be enough to convince me
to undertake the daily drive. Assuming 2000 work hours per year, that's $8,000. But I
think you need to do the math on what the commute is going to cost you.

As far as lines, you'll have access to lots of nifty lines at NM. As a customer, I
prefer shopping at NM to shopping at Sephora. Better lighting, better informed SAs,
more relaxed atmosphere. Again, I'd pick NM.

Big congratulations on having two good offers.

Those are the SA's. The MA's are on straight salary, no commission. I think
you'd do great in either job and there is no "wrong" decision here. That said,
I'd vote for Neiman's. Being in a small store (Sephora) can get somewhat
claustrophobic after a while. Plus, the retail hours aren't great. Neiman's
gives terrific training on all the lines, a discount on anything in the store
(including an extra 30% twice a year!) and you can wander around and lust after
everything on your breaks. They don't open early and stay open late during the
holidays, either.

I second everything Val says. This is from a makeup veteran who still works
20 hours a week in retail makeup.

As someone who has a long commute (about the same distance you mentioned) I
would suggest you take that into consideration. Try taking the drive a few
times at the hours you would be normally working to see what the traffic is
like at that time. Heavy traffic can double or triple commute time, and you
find yourself living by the traffic reports on the radio. It gets old fast.

I'd suggest NM. Far more prestige, appear to be better training
opportunities. And Versace is a wonderful line. Sephora is the 5 & 10, a
grocery store of cosmetics and not a very clean one. Yesterday I was in
their flagship at Rockefeller Center and they can not even keep that stocked
or clean - disgusting testers. I have never found staff at Sephora
knowledgeable. And about the commute - it takes a minimum of ten miles for
your car to warm up and run efficiently so if you have less than a ten mile
commute you are doing your car more harm than good. Plus heck we at
alt.fashion really need a good person at NM - particularly with Versace.
Yesterday in NYC, I couldn't even find Versace. Gone from Bergdorfs and the
Versace boutique was no longer on Fifth - moved or closed? rjudith

Hi Lorie, here's what you do when making decisions that are evenly split.
Write each on a piece of paper, fold up and place in a bowl. Shuffle around,
and pick one out. Whichever you choose, it will either be the one you
secretly wanted, or you'll think "Oh no, I wanted the other one!" Either
way, you'll have your instinctive answer. (What can I tell you, I have
trouble making decisions......do I?)
