Mr Blackwell has seems to have plenty of company in this newsgroup. :-)

Now, having trashed the fashion criminals, let's hear who you think was the
Best-Dressed at the awards.

Ohh, welllll...

Andie MacDowell!
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/p/nm/20020121/en/mdf116620.html

Yes, I'm kidding. Winner of the "If ya got, it, flaunt it" award though.

I prefer colorful, yet tasteful . Very difficult to find amongst all the
basic black.

Take Allison Janney for example;
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/p/nm/20020121/en/imdf21012002003555a.html

Halle Berry also wrapped herself up nicely:
http://dailynews.yahoo.com/h/p/nm/20020120/en/imdf20012002222318a.html

Most tasteful: Enya:

Men have very little leeway in these little fashion contests I would give a
nod to Billy Bob Thornton for having some sene of style and realizing he's
not at a funeral unlike Tom Hanks.

OK, you may now launch a full-scale attack on my fashion (non)sense. :-)

I thought Jennifer connely looked amazingly beautiful. Love the thick
eyebrows - they really frame and compliment her face and I believe that
most actresses eyebrows are too thin.

I thought Nicole looked great -- even with the pulled back hair (and I don't
usually like her Icy look).

SJP - looked terrible. she's a size zero, yet looked unattractive (darker
hair and bad smoky eyes) and kind of voluptuos in her dress.

Annette Benning looked very hip, pretty and tasteful in the white tuxedo
suit - took me a few minutes to figure out who she is, but for 45-50 she
looked amazing. I think she's has some minor surgery or Botox/ micro
dermabrasion or something.

Jennifer Aniston's hair was darker and although probably closer to her
natural color, was not as pretty/flattering.

Sela Ward is as beautiful as ever, but getting too skinny.

There were a lot of people beautifully dressed. Ironically, some of
them were spouses and girlfriends.

In my opinion, best dressed were:

1) Cate Blanchard;
2) Andie McDowell;
3) Kate Winslette.

for Men:

1) Kelsey Grammer (always looks fantastic);
2) Sean Puffy Combs;
3) Charlie Sheen.

I think I'm the only one but I thought Angelina Jolie is gorgeous -- and she
wore lipstick !

Also Jennifer Connelly (SP!) was beautiful and elegant as well. I remember her
in Mulholland Drive (not the Lynch one) -- she was a bit more curvy and still
beautiful -- but she's grown into a very sophisticated look.

Halle looked great, but when doesn't she, I just don't care for that brown.

The person I thought was best dressed, I cannot think of her name, she was not
nominated for anything and her picture is not in that slide show. I'll keep
looking. She was in that other, now defunct, hospital show that also starred
Mandy Patikin. I sat by her once waiting for our cars in Century City at the
Shopping Center and for the life of me, I cannot think of her name. You would
not believe how thin she looks in person and it was right after she had had her
twins. I believe twins anyway. Can anyone help with her name? E kept getting
shots of her.

Okay, yes, she looked great, thank goodness the Morticia days are behind her,
but I am so sick of the whispers and the kisses between her and Billy Bob
Thornton. I mean, what was wrong with this girl in the first place that she

Interesting. My husband and I were talking about how beautiful

and not Hollywood chiclet perfect. I for one think that big old fake

Tell me you don't think Halle Berry has the most beautiful smile you've ever
seen. She has the straightest, whitest teeth and she is a beauty.

I think Jennifer Connelly is beautiful too, I just think she'd be more
beautiful with her teeth straightened. I didn't especially notice that the
color was off, just the straight need to be straightened.

In about 15 minutes, I am taking my daughter to her orthodontist. I feel
straight teeth are important for someone's self-esteem, the integrity of their
mouth which is affected if the health and bite is affected. White teeth are
important too, otherwise the world would not be inundated with toothpaste
commercials to make your teeth white and those bleaching strips. Straight,
white teeth are beautiful and the way that God intended them to be. Nature
makes the imperfections.

Either you're some blasphemy-spewing High Priestess of Dentistry or -- more
likely -- simply high. I can't figure out whether the above snippet is
hysterically funny or one of the more absurd sub-epiphanies reached midway
during a particularly eventful lysergic-acid-diethylamide journey. All I
know is that your daughter is in pretty sorry hands if her mother-guided
path to self-esteem is via obnoxiously blinding Hollywood-billboard
cookie-cutter choppers. To put it more concisely: YUCK!

Incidentally, I have ridiculously white, straight teeth. My boyfriend's are
not. There's something about irregular teeth (and even irregular color --
within reason) that is sexy as all get-out.

I think Halle is a hotty, and she does have a beautiful smile... But I

Yeah, but there's some people who *need* braces for health and bite, and
some people who wear them to attain "perfection". And IMHO society's idea
of perfection is overrated.

>Straight,
> white teeth are beautiful and the way that God intended them to be.

Think of The Wife of Bath in The Canterbury Tales. :O) Her gap was the
loveliest thing about her, according to the narrator and what was considered
the norm for perfection in that era. Humanity's idea of perfection is so
fickle.
God makes us who we are, and *that* is how he intended us to be. (Although
I hope He doesn't mind if I fiddle with a few things. :O)

Actually this poster is not a high priestess of dentistry (although
judging from her posts she spends a suspicious amount of time
at the dentist); she is instead someone who routinely, indeed, constantly,
spouts ONLY tacky new-money opinions. And chiclet-glow-in-the-dark
teeth, unless one is born with them, are, like porn kitchens, very
new money and very very tacky. They are not as tacky as bragging
but they are still tacky.

Actually, in the 14th century, having a gap between your front teeth meant
that you were a red hot mama. It wasn't a sign of
perfection. The Wife of Bath had been married five times. She
was rather a coarse person, too. I'm thinking a combination of
Madonna and Elizabeth Taylor.

IIRC, in Chaucer's day, perfection was blonde, gray-eyed, with small,
thin, cherry lips, a high forehead (they used to pluck their hairline to
make it higher,) small breasts, and a pot belly--that last made you look
fertile.

Thankful to be living now,

Priscilla

p.s. I had a gap between my baby teeth. When I was five I looked like
Terry Thomas. Alas, it went away, as did my hopes of becoming a red hot
mama.

LOL, well, so now the truth comes out, you red hot mama. Do I take it we are
hearing your newest school subjects with the paintings?
Some art student once approached Josh Hartnett that she would pay him 25 bucks
if he would pose for her. He was on his way to one of his premieres, said he
was late for a premiere for a movie of his and she said "okay, 30 bucks," hehe.
She obviously did not recognize him. I thought about you and all those naked
men you must be painting in class now. LOL. I really should get back into my
painting. I probably should take a class, hehe.

I think you're thinking of "Giovanni Arnolfini and his bride" (1434) by Jan Van

I originally thought "Vermeer" and had to look it up.

Oh, isn't he though. I had seen an interview with him before, but I saw him in
Pearl Harbor, the movie and now I'm in love. Peter knows it, LOL. I told him
I want Josh Hartnett and he said, "oh, that's nice sweetie." ROTFLMAO!!!!

I was lovin' Martin Sheen's black attire. Wow.... he looked at least 10
years younger and much slimmer, too. James Gandolphini looked hot, too,
as did John Voight (distinguishedly handsome more so than hot) and
Benjamin Bratt. Hugh Jackman pissed me off. He is such a gorgeous man,
but that outfit he had on was just all wrong...

Angelina Jolie looked nice, but she's always got a vamp-effect going on.
Last time (or was it the year before?) it was her dress (Oscars, not
GGlobes) and this time it was her eyebrows, which looked tattooed on to
her lower forehead, like that nasty looking girl Monica, who took second
place on the last series of "Big Brother". Oddly enough, Jolie's brother
Jamie's eyebrows looked just as scary last night. He has an odd fixation
with foundation, beige lipliner, and eye makeup, that youngster...
;-)

And even scarier was the fact that for the first time in my life I
actually felt that Billy Bob Thornton looked handsome. He had a
reaaaaally nice tan and was clean shaven out in public for once in his
life. Big improvement, BillyBoy, but lose the goofy "I wish I was Samuel
L. Jackson" black beret, Dude, and have your wife lose the Cruella
DeVille eyebrows.

She's really boring looking. I agree. And what is up with her 80's Dale
Bozio from The Missing Persons hairstyle? Ewww. Did you hear that her
diamond necklace she was wearing cost her $65 thousand, though? OMG... I
almost fell over when I heard that tonight on television. Another real
Double Bagger is Ron Howard's wife.

She is very dowdy looking, as is Rita Wilson, the wife of Tom Hanks.
Rita dresses really cute and at least wears good makeup, however, unlike
the other two. Speaking of makeup, I couldn't belive how horrible Rachel
Griffith's (From Six Feet Under and the movie Hilary and Jackie) looked
last night. I dunno', though. She seemed *totally* tanked.

I thought that Heather Locklear looked like such a Farrah Fawcett
circa-1976 wannabee. That was hilarious. A *cocktail dress* for the
Golden Globes?!?!?! Whuuuutever! That might've worked for her hot pink
cocktail length wedding dress in the 80's with Tommy Lee, but it just
looked so dumb last night. Nice turquoise cockle shaped stones in the
neckline, however. Dresses with a bejewelled neckline are kinda' neat
that way.

Amen, but may I fact-check your poesy? Unless the daughter's orthodontist is
named Jesus (a possibility in California, I 'spose), the girl's alleged
Colgate grin is thanks to Mom's Vuitton purse. If I recall correctly, she
was being taken to the doctor's chair to boost her self-esteem thusly. Were
we to take this train of thought to its logical conclusion, her daughter was
one of God's failures, at least in the dental department -- either that, or
evil Nature intervened. I suppose rationale is that blinding whiteness is
close to Godliness. In any case, God couldn't have been terribly fond of
Mother Theresa.

Yes, I've heard of "Hedwig ..." I never got around to seeing that film

College was a while ago for me, too, but I remember my art history prof talking
at length about the "pregnancy." She said something about Van Eyck
exaggerating the symbolism in the pictures (the pointed shoes, the raised
hands). I also remember that the circular painting within the painting is
loaded with detail, each of the circles is a portrait in itself.

I love his sense of color and light. I always thought his regal portraits were
fantastic.

Oh, the lipgloss shades he could have invented (hahaha).

I thought Jennifer Connelly was the Belle of the ball.

Nicole Kidman looked great imho as well.

Loved Kate Hudson's dress and Halle Berry's too.

I thought Portia De Rossi and Angelina Jolie looked scary..must have been the
eyebrows.

As for men-

Ewan McGregor..sigh. I thought he looked HOT!! I was hoping he would win, just
so I could hear him speak :)

Simon Baker and Hayden Christensen are easy on the eyes too, and Denzel was
looking good.

It is also very interesting to note that a moron
with an internet connection remains a moron.

One of the many annoyances of the online age is
people of limited intellect and education who
present themselves as *soi-disant* authorities
on any given subject simply because they Googled
for information-- flawed information in this case,
and lifted directly from someone else's web site
to boot. Tsk tsk.

The name of the female figure in Jan van Eyck's
_Arnolfini Wedding Portrait_ (1434) is Giovanna
Cenami, not "Cerami", an error found in the
following essay whence AF's village idiot gleaned
her poorly digested secondhand comments:

http://www.english.uiuc.edu/klein/_disc1/0000002b.htm

The bride's contours can be attributed to the
aesthetic conventions of the Late Gothic, not
a shotgun wedding. One could also argue that
Giovanna's maternal pose, with her hand upon
her womb, emphasises her new role in society
as Giovanni Arnolfini's wife and the future
bearer of his children; a role reinforced by
the presence of a statuette of Saint Margaret
in the background (St. Margaret was the patron
saint of safe childbirth).

In any event Jan would not have risked offending
a rich and powerful figure like Giovanni Arnolfini--
a titled Italian merchant who settled in Flanders
and wielded great economic influence at court--
by depicting Giovanni's beautiful young bride
as an unwed mother.

This most famous and enigmatic of double portraits
hangs in the National Gallery in London. I was
fortunate enough to see it in person and was dazzled
by Jan's technique-- his lapidary colors and meticulous
attention to detail are astonishing to behold.

If anyone would like to learn more about Jan van
Eyck or 15th century Netherlands painting, instead
of Google I recommend James Snyder's _Northern
Renaissance Art: Painting, Sculpture, the Graphic
Arts from 1350 to 1575_ as an introductory survey.

(Aside to the illiterati: this is a rectangular
object comprising consecutive sheets of paper
bound together in a volume; also known as a
"book".)

ObFash: the clog-like wooden shoes in Jan's painting
are called pattens. They were worn outdoors to protect
soft-soled medieval shoes from mud and rain.

They do, and she wasn't. The confusion is due to people in our time not
understanding certain aspects of the styles of *that* time.

Yes--St. Margaret is on the bedpost, which would be just where you'd
need her while you were in labor in the bed. Also, keep in mind that
the "pregnant" look is a combination of stance (shoulders back, belly
forward), the then-current ideal body type (small breasts and larger,
protruding belly), and the fashions of the time (that many gathers will
make *anyone* look pregnant).

He didn't, because she wasn't, and the people of that time would have
known that. The psuedo-pregnant look was as popular in its day as the
rail-thin-with-a-boob-job look is now, and would have been just as
familiar to people then. (Lucas Cranach's Eve in his painting of Adam &
Eve is a classic unclothed example of the body type in question, FWIW.)

...and would be taken off indoors for such an event not just because
they wouldn't be needed (although in some castles they might be,
sanitation not being a priority...), but because the couple is, in a
sense, on sacred ground while they take their vows, and taking off your
shoes is a sign of respect to God. (At least that's what I was told
during my Medieval art classes.) Also, IIRC correctly, there's a little
dog in the painting, which symbolizes fidelity. I'm sure there's more
symbolism at work, but I don't have my textbooks in front of me,
sorry...
