So, would someone like to tell me what these four have done? I'm
ignorant about a lot of stuff pre-1987, and the only thing I know is
that Kane created Batman, and presumably a lot of his supporting cast.

Bob Kane created the visual look for Batman
Winsoy McCau is best known for his strip "Little Nemo in Slumberland"
Alex Raymond was the force behind the "Flash Gordon" comic strip
Hal Foster invented Foster's Beer and Foster children.

Hal Foster invented "Prince Valiant". Windsor McCay is the god of
animation: "Little Nemo" doesn't ring a bell? Alex Raymond invented
"'Flash' Gordon."

Sigh.
