"Woody Allen's character is a struggling and insecure artist in New York. He is
having an affair with Christina Ricci's character, a dense and self-centered
young girl. Jason Biggs is Ricci's boyfriend, and when he finds out about the
affair, he confronts Allen. Meanwhile, Allen must avoid Danny Devito who plays
Christina Ricci's father, chasing after Allen with a loaded shot gun."
Thoughts anyone?
"Broadway Danny Rose II: The Next Generation"?
Hmm. By "artist" I suppose they mean a visual artist like a painter? This
feels like it could add a bit of interest and variety to the Woody-character
tradition. Don't get me wrong; I like just about all of the characters he has
ever played. But it would be interesting to see him as someone creative other
than a writer, professor, comedian, or other wordsmith (leaving aside the
criminals and lowlives he played in the broader comedies like Small Time Crooks
and Take the Money & Run, Jade Scorpion, etc). For instance, we know what kind
of novels Harry Block writes and we know what kind of stand up comedy Alvy
Singer performs. But what would paintings by a Woody Allen character look
like? Would he be the last of the great brooding abstract expressionists? A
"pop" artist or postmodernist with clever and ironic visual commentary on
contemporary NY culture? A portrait painter who secretly hates his snooty
upper class patrons? A landscape painter who hates nature? My God, the
possibilities are endless!! And, if he is "struggling" then maybe the
character will live somewhere in the city other than a posh Upper East Side
luxury building near Central Park. This looks like it could be one of his more
unique and challenging films. Of course, I'm only basing my speculation on a
small paragraph of plot summary, but it was still fun. Either way, I'll see it
at least twice like I always do!
This sounds hilarious - Woody Allen has taken a lot of flack from the
press for romancing younger leading ladies, and it sounds like he is
addressing this angry response directly in the plot of this film -
this could make for some powerful and honest comedy. Plus, Woody
running for his life was hilarious in "Broadway Danny Rose". I can't
wait to see it.
Actually, I wasn't aware that Woody was going to star in this one. The
other main characters are so young (Ricci, Biggs etc.), so the fact
that he - once again - is going to have an on-screen affair with a
lovely, young actress who could be his granddaughter doesn't please
me. It doesn't get easier over the the years to buy it.
Anyway, I do look forward to seeing him playing a "struggling and
insecure artist". That sounds like a lot of "classic Woody" fun.
