i haven't read of "discontented" pigs in any of P.G.W's books yet..though there is a mention of "contented" pigs in 'The Mating Season" Chapter 8 page 86. Hope this was helpful. :) cheers.

Hi Marilyn, thank you for your reply but i knew of the "contented
pigs" occurence (used google...)

to give a bit more context to my question, my recollection of the
story is

"a friend of Bertie writes a successful, wildly amusing novel about
his years in public school

the lawyers of the school cite him for defamation on the only basis
that he can't prove that the sausages served at the refectory were
made of discontented pigs, as he wrote in his book

it seems that he will soon retrieve himself pennyless and labeled as
a libelist

needless to say that the good chap's fiancee doesn't like to marry a
libelist, in particular a pennyless one and she turns her gaze on
Bertie, until Jeeves restore happiness"

to me it's more PGW-ish than any of my fantasies, but i can be
wrong...

I think the novel you're looking for was published in the USA as _How
Right You Are, Jeeves_ and in the UK as _Jeeves in the Offing_.

Bertie's friend didn't actually write a "novel within the novel" as you
recollect; instead Reggie "Kipper" Herring is a writer for a literary
magazine who is assigned the task of reviewing the memoirs of the
headmaster of the school that Bertie and Kipper attended. He assailed
the headmaster's book as not reflecting the former inmates' point of
view, but the cracks about the breakfast sausages were added by Bobbie
Wickham to Reggie's manuscript review...she had found his stories about
them funny and thought they should be published, without thinking of the
legal consequences. Must be that red hair....

i read _Jeeves in the Offing_ 35 years ago, probably the first PGW
novel i read in english... now i have to dig it out, no?
