Every time I read a book now I start to imagine it with utena characters. Which
books would fuse well with utena?

Here's an idea I had:

Having managed to completely stump myself trying to work out the details of an
utena/dune fusion I have hit upon another utena book fanfic idea thing.

Utena and Catch 22 AKA revolution 22

They're both about people striving for utterly meaningless things and trying to
escape from a closed little world right? i'm unsure if it'll actually be set in
the medditeranean or just written in hellers narative style. Here's a potential
cast list:

starring utena as yossarian

anthy as the chaplain or natelies whore or lucrezia or ARGH BRAIN STUCK

akio as colonel cathcart

chairman ohtori as general dreedle

mikage as major major major major or possibly the dead man in yossarians tent

mitsuru as ex pfc wintergreen

miki as nately

kozue as natelies whore (I thought about juri and shiori for this but miki is
naive enough and juri isn't)

touga as 1st lt. milo minderbinder

saionji as captain black

chuchu as hungry joe

wakaba as snowden (don't think about that too much, her role is basically just
to be dead)

keiko, aiko and yuuko as "yo-yos roomies"

one of the hundred duellists as the soldier in white

Nanami as aarfy

Sir, you are an evil, evil man. :)

There are parallels, certainly... but I'm not sure how close it is.
The point in Catch 22 is that Yossarian is trapped in a nonsensical
situation against his will, and in the end he has to realise (a la
Wargames) that the only way to win the game is not to play. Utena
isn't really trapped against her will - she chooses to stay in the
game, even when explicitly given the chance to leave. It's her sense
of hnour that traps her, not the rules of the game...

Why thank you.

Well utena also realizes the absurdness and evilness behind the game, which is
why she tries to free anthy. No anthy no game.

Or how about this? Reverse it gender wise with touga and nanami.
In both cases it's the innocent one trying to impose good values on the whorish
one. Hey if I did that then mitsuru could be the whores kid sibling.

More:

Tokiko or one of the shadow girls as nurse ducket

Juri as chief halfoat with the teacher she scared as captain flume

Kazuya as huple

Ruka as orr (because he realizes how evil the game is and graduates, albeit by
dying) "I'm just here to enjoy the decadent academy lifestyle...WITH
APPLECHEEKS!"

Perhaps mikage as the doctor (I forget his name) who is supposed to be dead but
isn't, I forget his name. Damn too many ghosts.

Shiori as...well there are so many people who care only about themselves in
that book, there's a lot of spots open for her

Hmmm... The castle in the sky is really a Spice induced dimensional rip
caused by some kind
of Tleilaxu poison ingested by a Guild navigator. Utena and the rest of the
duelists find their way in
and discover it's a portal to Seitch Tabr. Paul/Muad'ib enlists them in the
fight against the Harkonnens. Utena
is taught the Wierding Way and ends up killing Feyd. Paul takes Utena as
his second wife while Touga marries
Irulan. Akio and Anthy use the spice to enhance the Ohtori students' mental
capacity and create a super
elite student body to rule Earth.

Another fanfic idea, No Need for Duelists: Tenchi Masaki is sent to
Ohtori for his last semester. Will Utena
discover that he's a *real* prince? Will Ryoko fight Utena? Will Tsuwabuki
come to his senses and fall for
Sasami? Will Chu Chu eat all of Ryo-Ohki's carrots? What posesses more
power, the Sword of Dios or the Light
Hawk Sword? Is Akio working for Kagato? Is Anthy just an avatar of Lady
Tokimi?

OK, time to turn in...

Except the kiryuus. Their mental capacities are unfortuenately too low to be
enhanced.

Also: Curried high trip body switching would be different with other memory...

Well, that hasn't _quite_ been done, although someone (shanejayell, I
think) wrote Ayeka and Ryoko into his/her silly super crossover fic
that took place at Ohtori, IIRC.

I wrote a silly "Utena vs. Tenchi" deathmatch sort of thing in
response to a thread at the AIC Anime BBS that was entitled "Utena vs.
Tenchi, ChuChu vs. Ryo-ohki: Who Will Win?" I had it take place at the
Masaki Shrine, however, not at Ohtori. I thought I had saved it to put
on my Web site, but I can't find the file at the moment... If you're
curious and/or bored, you could probably do a search for it at the AIC
BBS, though.

The results, btw, as voted for by the AIC BBS members, were that
Tenchi and Ryo-ohki won. Considering the site of the voting, that
wasn't at all surprising, although it also kinda makes sense.

I thought about re-writing it into a mildly more serious story, but
there are several problems in crossing over the two universes. First
is just the tone and atmosphere is very different, so it would be hard
to mesh... Utena has a strong dream-like quality which makes much of
its "magic" seem more metaphorical, whereas the events in Tenchi, as
fantastic as they may be, are all pretty solidly "real" in that
universe. The comic tone of my crossover made it slightly easier, but
still... it's hard to quantify certain things particularly in the
Utenaverse.

Secondly, the difference in power levels--particularly if we're
talking the Tenchi OAV--is enormous, making any sort of combat
incredibly difficult. The cast of Tenchi consists of gods, demigods,
descendants of gods, and people who otherwise get their powers from
gods (I am not including Kiyone, since she is not an OAV cast member).
Washu is a fallen god who has lost much of her original power--and
look how amazingly powerful she still is! On the other hand, with the
possible exception of Anthy, Akio, and Dios, all of the characters are
ordinary human beings. Many of them are top athletes or incredibly
brilliant, but still only on a human scale--most of the Tenchi
characters are still going to far far far exceed them. And even with
the Himemiya Triad, most of their "magic," if you take it as literal
magic, is primarily illusory in nature; little beyond the
suped-up-by-anthy-Sword-of-Dios can do any sort of actual damage.
Compare this to Tenchi's Light Hawk Wings that can safely absorb the
energy of a forming Black Hole so that people standing at the point of
the Black Hole's creation survive the event... it's just not going to
work, at least not if you're doing the sort of combat or space
adventure one associates with the Tenchiverse. And even if you get any
of the Tenchi characters involved in an Ohtori swordfight, most of the
characters either have training or reflexes or strength superior to
any Utena character.

All that said, however, if one is going to consider a Utena/Tenchi
crossover, one might note some odd similarities... Ryoko was hunted
down by the entire universe, brainwashed to serve a powerful lord (who
incidentally is essentially her "brother" in that they were both
created by Washu, as is indicated in the True Tenchi Novels), and
ultimately sealed in a tomb where she could only astrally project
herself from until her kind-hearted prince came to rescue her. She and
Anthy could have some interesting conversations. Utena and Tenchi both
have similar values and goals and would probably be happy to work
together if given a common purpose. Akio's ability to dig into
people's pasts, discern their deepest desires, and then use such
things to manipulate into serving him would be interesting, given that
most of the Tenchi characters have very traumatic pasts, unrequited
loves, and so forth... (the only problem is is that once he got shown
for what he was, he'd be made so much smear on the carpet by an angry
Ryoko). Akio and Washu are both in some senses, in some
interpretations, "fallen gods"... what if Akio tried to get his hands
on the Three Gems and unleash their power?

Also following the god theory... there are certain interpretations
(supported somewhat by the manga but not particularly the other
versions of the Utena story) that say Anthy, Akio, and Dios were
gods... if you put them in the Tenchi Universe, they would have to be
underlings of the Chousin (i.e. Tsunami, Washu, and Tokimi). They
would not necessarily directly serve them, but they would certainly
ultimately have to answer to them in certain situations. How would the
Himemiyas react to find "Washu-sama" in mortal form in Japan? Tsunami
assimilated with a Juraian child?

Certainly there would be some interesting conversations and
possibilities here. But balancing it all out, threading it all
together, would take quite a lot of work, particularly if you wanted a
semi-serious story. A very comic story or spoof would be easier, as
you could avoid certain technicalities, of course.

Well, I've babbled enough. Sorry if I'm bursting your bubble... Tenchi
and Utena are my favorite anime, so it's something I'd naturally be
prone to think about, and probably far too much for my own health. If
you're pitching this as your own idea you might work on, by all means
go for it... I hope the quibbles I listed would be helpful in
narrowing down and cleaning up story possibilities.

Well, crossing the two universes could prove to be quite amusing if you
threw in elements from Tenchi Universe
or even Tenchi in Tokyo (Yugi's worlds vs. Washu's Dimensional Tuner vs.
Akio's projector)

That's the challenge of a crossover, melding the proper proportion of
elements from
each series while keeping the characters "in character".

If Tenchi were fighting only with a wooden sword that he trains with
Utena might
stand a chance. The question is whether he'd ever duel for Anthy. Besides,
with the
Juraian ring on his finger her has no room for the Rose signet :-)

Anthy seems too dull to interest Ryoko. I'd think that Saionji and Touga
would be hitting
on her. She in turn would clobber them. She'd probably find Nanami even
more distasteful
than Aeka.

I'd think that he'd end up with a nasty burn like Kagato did (with
Katsuhito
snickering in the background :-)

Maybe Akio as the 4th Megami?

Based on some of the silly stuff on www.tmffa.com a x-over spoof would
be
*very* amusing.

I'm actually about 3/4 done a Tenchi/Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfic and
have the
beginnings of an Utena/NGE crossover, too. Maybe I will sit down and write
a Tenchi/Utena fanfic.
...stay tuned

Well a couple things:

I've always thought of dios as having been the protector humanity, before he
fell, so all the modern ages bad stuff (war, poverty, nuclear weapons, tyranny,
etc.) are his and anthys faults. I see him as having been a kind of patron god
of humanity. Thus he could be considered a god too.

Also, akios power is different from, say, ryokos. He's an illusionist. He
displays incredible power, just not generally in the boom-bang-blow-shit-up
type way. He manages to manipulate the memories of HUNDREDS of ohtoris students
to make them forget nemuro/mikage, he keeps ruka from dying, he projects
everything in the duelling arena, etc. With the power he lost he'd be on a
level with a chousen, or at least kagato.

PS: how about utena/lovecraft? What if akio were actually nyarlethetop? eh?

If Akio is Nyarlathotep, then I guess that would make Dios Azathoth the Idiot
God, and Anthy would be Shub-Niggurath, since both are mother-goddess types. So
I guess that huge octopus baloon in Anthy's closet is actually an avatar of
Great Cthulhu? ^^

It would solve a mystery. I'd been wondering "why an octopus". We should
be glad it wasn't a Pokethulu.

This assumes that the SPGs are referring to Ruka, or even telling the truth
about him, in that episode. For all we know, neither Mikage nor Ruka are

Taking SKUtena at face value, it's very easy to see why most crossover
fanfics
started with the series run into trouble very quickly. Most of the major
series that
spawn fanfic tend to be either shonen martial arts death machine series
(Ranma 1/2)
or maho shojo/sentai series (Sailor Moon) and when you look at crossing the
characters from those series into the universe of Utena, you come to one
conclusion
very quickly: the Utena characters are hideously outgunned. Nobody at Ohtori
can fight
anywhere near as well as the main characters of Ranma 1/2, and as for the
Sailor Senshi...
Akio's ability to manipulate time and space/cast illusions pales next to the
power of
Sailor Pluto and the vision of Sailor Mercury.

You've already discussed Tenchi and his cohorts. At best, Akio may be a god,
if
he has the power of Dios, but for most of the series he does not. He's
trying to
regain it. How can he possibly deal with the whole Masaki clan and their
friends?

There was a good reason why Sho-i Tanaka stuck to using secondary characters
from Ranma 1/2 and other manga for "Shojo Kakumei Ukyo". If Ranma had shown
up at Ohtori in anything like his normal fighting condition, carnage would
have ensued
whether he was boy-type or girl-type. Ditto for Shampoo, Ryoga (who appears
only
briefly and is quickly ushered offstage), and most of the main characters,
not excepting
Tatewaki Kuno. Doing otherwise with them would have required a lot of
bending and
twisting of characters, and there was enough of that going on already
without
complicating matters.

I could see doing a crossover between something like "Marmalade Boy" or
"Sakura
Diaries" and "Utena", but anything else? You'd have to find a way to
(believably)
power up the Duelists of Ohtori or explain how the other characters lost
their combat/
magic skills. Good luck.

That's the beauty of series like Utena and Neon Genesis Evangelion, you
can't take them at
face. There's much more "under the hood".

I'm about 3/4 of the way through the SKU/NGE crossover fanfic "Fane of
the Firebird", pretty deep
stuff and a good darkfic.

That's the problem with so much fanfic, it focuses on confrontation and
conflict. It's harder to
get inside the heads of the characters, second guess the original writers
and imagine how they'd
interact. OK, so Utena would last about 5 seconds against Goku, but neither
would Puar or
Oolong, still both are interesting and amusing characters in the DB/DBZ
universe. We wouldn't
need Utena in the World Martial Arts Tournament in order for her to be a
viable part of a well
written crossover. Then imagine her being trained by Master Roshi (he'd be
drooling over her :-)
along with a young Goku and Krillen. I think she'd make fast friends with
Bulma and maybe
catch Yamcha's eye? Write on...

That's up to the imagination of the fanfic writer. SKU is filled with
interesting characters
besides our heroine. Imagine if Tenchi was sent to Ohtori for a semester.
Suppose Kagato wanted the projector? Suppose Washu got her
hand on it? Suppose *Mihoshi* got into it's inner workings! Watch out
Ohtori!

Hmmm... lots of possible interesting tie in's with:

Tenchi Muyo - Akio is an expatriate Juraian with motives possibly in
conflict with Yosho
NGE - Akio is a member of SEELE, Anthy is Rei's long lost sister and a
secret backup Impact trigger. The Marduk
institute recruits Utena as an EVA pilot.
El Hazard - Makoto finds that the projector reacts to him in an unexpected
way
Dominion Tank Police - I dare anyone to try this :-)

You can do both. You aren't limited to only face value or only NOT face value.
You can go by only what's presented... or you can explore.

No need for a harsh generalization like "You can't". ^.~

Kevin isn't... he's just exploring the situation from a Face Value ethic ^-^

A Good point and always a good way to explore situations. Like one of my regular

Sorry for scarring anyone with that line ^^;

Sounds like Tenchi Universe. Not to put a damper mind you. But He seems more the
Yugi type. In Full on Exile and sealaway... not just off on another
planet/dimension biding his time till he regains the power of dios and heads back
for what's his.

Could be a relic I can buy this...

More of a matter of why? You'd have to have an angle for why first. Following a
criminal? I'd leave him to the place. Probably laugh at Saionji's apron and taste
Saionji's Glorious Omelet. Investigating a lead... reminds me of Touga sending
Utena off to the arena...

Anyfey, I'm getting a strong impression you love crossovers to pieces ^^;

Which is why I originally said crossing Utena over into other worlds
is difficult... it's quite dreamlike and metaphorical in many
respects, it's not quite like a lot of other anime out there, so to
blend it with other worlds, you've got to tweak the ambience a bit...
and risk losing the Utena "feel."

Note I am not saying you _can't_ cross Utena over with other anime...
I just said it was a challenge.

<snip>

Certainly you don't _need_ combat in fanfic. However, particularly in
fan fic that's focusing on anime in which combat is a commonly used
plot device, it sometimes helps to get the right "feel" for the anime
to through some combat action in. It doesn't have to be a major point
of the fic, or a major event, but often it helps set up the setting or
mood appropriately. And if handled well, combat can certainly help
character development, by showing how characters work together (or
don't) and seeing what motivates them in a fight. That's certainly the
case with Utena and the duels. The actual swordplay is less important
than what we learn about the characters and their motivations during
those scenes. The duels are merely a useful device to get us to that
point.

The challenge in crossovers is that IF -- and I said "if" in my
earlier post and I'll repeat it again -- you are including combat as a
plot device or some such, you have to be very careful in how you're
going to handle balancing power levels. I think one of the original
examples of the Tenchi/Utena crossover was "What if Tenchi joins the
duels" -- the answer is, should he intuit her as a valid threat, Utena
Toast. Or something else along those lines.

Crossing over TM! and SKU would be difficult because you'd have to be
very careful with what goes on--the powers and skills and knowledge of
the characters permeates even their everyday excistence; encountering
this, the SKU characters would probably be at a loss of what to do.
And yes, if you worked this out right, this in itself could make an
interesting story. But you have to work to give everyone something to
do and something to talk about beyond, "You can walk through walls?
Wow...." You would have to be a master of dialogue and subtle plot
moving, and you'd have to work hard to mesh in the more subtle
metaphors of SKU with the more blatant booming symbology and cosmology
of TM!

It's all possible. It's just not going to work as your typical "Xboy
vs. BoyX Deathmatch!" Which you already agree with, I think, so I'll
move on...

Ryoko and Ayeka would follow and zap every girl who looked at him.

If Tenchi found out about the duels, he'd probably work to find the
source of what's causing it and try to end it... the hard part of this
is that he could easily push Utena out of the revolutionary limelight.

It'd be hard to do a crossover romance because of Tenchi's already
huge harem... but I'm sure there could be some cool friendships
developed. I'm sure Tenchi and Utena would get along very well...
except Utena would be the first to tell him to just grin and bear it
as far as the gaggles of screaming girls go...

It'd be fun to do a little comedy fic, where Tenchi and Utena
commiserate about unwanted and painful glompings...

> Suppose Kagato wanted the projector? Suppose Washu got her
> hand on it?

In all honesty, not to start off sounding like I just want to crush
your ideas, but... Washu can create her own sub-dimensions. Kagato is
not Washu's equal in strength but pretty powerful and knowledgeable.
The projector would probably only be of passing interest to either of
them. After all, TV Washu created a device that could _send_ you to
the world you desire, not just create an illusion of it. OAV Washu is
much more powerful than she is. The projector's well within her
capacity of understanding.

But wait!

On the other hand, she'd be impressed an Earthling could design such a
thing, so of course, she might take a little time to track down its
creator...

A story of two pink-haired scientists with memory problems and past
love pain... the man who never aged and the woman who refuses to grow
up... all goes well, until Mikage forgets to call her "Little"
Washu...

> Suppose *Mihoshi* got into it's inner workings! Watch out

Mihoshi: Oh my! Is that a planetarium projector? What's this button

Mr. Akio? Mr. Akio? Is that you I hear growling?

> Hmmm... lots of possible interesting tie in's with:
>
> Tenchi Muyo - Akio is an expatriate Juraian with motives possibly in
> conflict with Yosho

Well, Yosho's OAV past is pretty well fleshed out thanks to the True
Tenchi novels, so it'd be hard to work that in... but... well, there
are four royal clans. Perhaps Akio lost his royal tree...

I always thought it'd be interesting to make Anthy and Akio former
underlings of the Chousin... imagine what Akio might do when he
discovers the great Washu has lost her godhood as well...

Or perhaps the fall of Dios is a myth based around the story of a
great interplanetary hero gone bad, where the hero and his sister
escaped the wrath of their galactic persuers on planet Earth. But
they're still not cleared for their crimes... and Mihoshi picks them
up on her wrist-com one day...

Or for utter silliness... somehow, the Masaki crew is nearby when
Anthy makes a new batch of curry. Jury's in Ryoko's body, Nanami in
Ryo-ohki's.... hilarity and mass destruction ensues...

The only other SKU crossover I thought of, one largely comedic, was
one with Love Hina... largely because I'd love to see a Kendo match
between Saionji and Matoko. ^^

Knowing too much Love Hina for my own good, I believe that the kendo girl's
name is Motoko. As in Major Motoko Kusanagi.

Hmm... Considering Love Hina and Utena, I have to say that maybe a good
premise would be Hinata Inn being somehow linked to Ohtori?

Well there's enough weirdness in LH to justify it. "Wow so that's what's in the

Yes. I have my theories about why some characters do what they do in
the series, but it's too easy to get lost in a wilderness of mirrors trying
to
figure out who really is telling the truth and when. For that matter, what
is the "true" version of the events?

It's quite possible to do character studies and other stories that don't
involve conflicts
between the characters (and there have been some very fine ones done for
Utena)
but when you're doing crossovers you have to make an extra effort to
understand
not only the characters but the situations that brought them to the place
and time
the story has them existing in. If you don't make that effort as a writer
you wind up
blowing out your readers' suspension of disbelief, unless you're trying to
be funny -
which is even harder to bring off than a straight prose piece.

Yes, SKU is filled with interesting characters, but just plopping characters
in
from other stories won't do. How did they get there? What limits are there
on
their powers (especially in the case of Tenchi) that are going to keep him
from
leveling the place once he perceives the evil at work there? This was my
point.
You can write anything you want, but if you're just going to plop characters
in
and play with them then you're wandering into Gonterman territory, a land
where nothing makes very much sense at all except as a tool to make the
author feel good about his cleverness and creativity.

Besides, any SKU crossover of length that deals with even some of the events
is going to involve the duels, and that brings Utena into the picture. If
not Utena,
then somebody like her who can be used (and abused) by Akio and Anthy.

"Fane of the Firebird", fun to read as it was, never answered the question
of
just what most of the NERV folks were doing at Ohtori in the first place.
It captured entirely too well the gnostic "WTF is going on here?" feel of
the later NGE eps after Anno went crackers.

I have to agree with Eld here. Appealing as the Puma sisters are, why would
they
be at Ohtori? Also, a world sufficiently screwed up to require Tank Police
isn't
going to have much room for an Ohtori in it.

I think that's why there are so few good Utena xovers out there.
It's *too much* of a challenge to write it.

As you may or may not remember, Sho-i T was somewhat
disturbed at the way SKUkyo turned out....much more serious
and far less comedic than originally intended, and that may have
been because Utena is much darker than Ranma 1/2.

They are in fact a recurring theme in the anime for that very reason.
The duels are the vehicle by which many of the characters' conflicts are
resolved, since so many of those conflicts revolve around (or are made
to revolve around) Anthy and her powers.

Quite frankly, I don't see how you could do any kind of extended

Right too much of ElH requires the rest of the cast. A Fic crossing the two I'd
expect the rest of the cast to show up at some point. A Mental given even in my
"I can buy this." ^-^

Afterall anything Makoto gets to goof with Jinnai will want for himself to see
what all the fuss is. Since he's self appointed Rival and all.

Heh... well I'm the guy who gets a module for a game and reads something lame
like "PCs hear of treasure and go looting. Adventure ensues." and just twitch.
Sure after they start things get better but having to pitch to a group of people
that the next module at face value is just a treasure hunt... and they're all
already equipped doesn't bring them in. Why were THEY told? How was this
knowledge gained. Who in the group was told? Heck... How was it broached? Will
there be distraction along the way? Anyone out to stop them even taking the rumor
up?

Afterall a party of say mages being told about a mysterious dungeon in say Amn
(mage hating place) should be naturally suspect that the rumor isn't just a big
flonking trap of some kind.

Both easier and harder to apply the same to fanfic... easier... no players...
harder... you can't just ASK for motivations. Not everyone has Ikuni-san or
Anno-san in their backpocket. And with Ikuni he probably wouldn't tell you anyway

Yup. That's what's happening with my SKU crossover and my SKU fusion.
I'm not saying now if they'll be *good*, just that these challenges are
real and I know if I ignore that, I *will* end up with not-good.

Which is why I snarkily threw in that Eagles snippet. It fits the plot(s) of
Utena all too well...a lot of hearts do get broken over the 3+ seasons of
the duels, and not all of them mend by the end of the series. Any crossover
has to deal with that...and as much as we all like our happy endings, at
least
one character from Utena ends up alone at the end of it all.

Ukyo should have had somebody to console her at the end of SKUkyo,
but unfortunately things just didn't work out that way.

*kneels* I humbly beg your forgiveness for, in typing hastily,
substituting a most erroneous "a" instead of the most exalted "o."

That would certainly work. Or even if they weren't precisely linked,
but very similar in "power" and in the closedness of the world.

Hinata is much less sinister than its purposes than Ohtori though...
people live in their dreams there, but the people there are brought
together to see both the fantasy as well as the reality in their
dreams--and perhaps most notable is the "brought together" part. Utena
fought the tide to forge healthy friendly bonds with others at Ohtori.

A comparison done in narrative format would be most interesting...

Likewise, if we move back to Tenchi (which is the only other anime
which I'm obsessive enough about to pick apart well) much is learned
about the characters through the combative scenes. It's not that Ryoko
kicks ass that's important... it's why she's doing it and when... and
we learn to see the difference between the "demon" Ryoko that
assaulted Jurai and the 700-year-later Ryoko that playfully picks
catfights with Ayeka (and come to think of it... putting the two
together... why Ryoko in her "demonized" state didn't kill Ayeka
during the assault on Jurai even though she had every opportunity.)
Likewise and moreover with Tenchi--his Light Hawk Wings appear when he
and his loved ones are in danger--it's not that this incredible power
is "cool," it's that it's indicative of something very special inside
Tenchi that's connected directly with the power of his heart.

Now didn't that sound cheesy? ^^

That, or Mihoshi ends up turning on the duel arena and ends up
fighting with someone... all is quite chaotic until a figure descends
from the castle... a figure with long flowing dark turquoise hair and
an orange headband... she merges with Mihoshi's body and Mihoshi
emerges triumphant.

The arena is, nonetheless, trashed to all hell.

The same could be said of LH. It's overall much more silly than SKU
but it's still got some very deep themes and issues that pop up in it
from time to time... themes and issues that have to do with when to
hold onto your dreams and when to let them go...

Baseball manager, source of many good quotes over the years.
At the beginning of his managing career, when he was running the
hapless Boston Braves (later Milwaukee, still later Atlanta) a
barber accidentally nicked his throat hile shaving him. Durocher
cracked, "Don't cut my throat. I may want to do that myself later."

I've been tempted to take a look at LH, but I need to quit the deficit
spending on anime and manga.

Blame Jeep! He's the original.
Ryo-Ohki is Kajashima's nod to Max Fleischer. They both can pass through
solid matter and I believe Jeep
also has telepathic powers. Now if only Chu-Chu had half as much brains as

Hey, if you can figure out what the plot of that is, could you fill the rest of
us in? Between that and "Miyuki-Chan in Wonderland", I have sworn eternal
enmity against every form of CLAMP anime inflicted on the eyes of man.
Well, maybe I'll cut Magic Knights Rayearth some slack. That made sense.

This makes me think of when I saw "Freddy Vs. Jason" this weekend. People have
long known that having Freddy fight Jason would, despite being real cool, be
hard to pull off. Freddy is a disembodied spirit who lives in dream-land who
kills with mind-games rather than just brute force, while Jason is a big brute
with little mind to speak of. Yet they still managed to believeably pull it
off, which goes to show that a healty imagination can overcome all sorts of
theoretical obstacles.

This is another excellent point. When doing an anime xover, why do Godzilla vs.
King Kong when you can do the Jetsons Meet the Flintstones instead?

No, I'm afraid that Motoko seems to have forgotten more about Kendo than
Saionji will ever learn. ^^ The gnarly tricks she can do with her sword could
conceivably make her a match even for Kenshin - she prolly wouldn't win, but
she'd be no 'gimme'. Start Sai off on someone easy, like Raijuta or Utsutsu

There is no better if done well. A plain comedy can flop when a lemon might shine

be well written and funny and something to enjoy. As would a well done non stupid

No no no... this proud KOME White Knight will not let the likes of
Akio touch her beloved Mihoshi. Most likely he'd be using her, and I
could not accept that. (And if Tenchi got wind... heck, depending on
the version, if Kiyone got wind.... buh-bye Mr. Ohtori...)

Likewise, I imagine Akio fans would not want Mihoshi to get anywhere
near him in that way... really, either way you look at it, there's too
much danger of him getting hurt!

That's true. ("Green-Haired Moron Devastation Style Form 2!") Then let
me put it this way... I'd still love to see Saio and Motoko interact.
They both have this Samaurai-vision of themselves; they both take
themselves way too seriously... I can see it in the form of a silent
Samurai movie, the way Motoko's first ep was done...

I could see a very, very silly fic with Mihoshi trashing the tower as
only she can... possibly as an attempt to arrest Akio for something
(and of course probably something entirely different than what he
thinks it is... "I didn't know the age of consent had risen!" "Huh?
What does that have to do with unlawful littering?")

OR

Using specifically OAV Mihoshi, I could see a very serious fic about
the two of them dealing with the past and hiding from it. In the OAV
it's mentioned that Mihoshi was a very good police officer who burned
out, resulting in her clumsy antics (note in the OAV she's a good cop
(if insubordinate), she notices things no one else does, her physical
prowess is actually quite impressive, etc.... she's just very very
absentminded and has a very innocent demeanor)... many have theorized
that her childlike-manner is a way to cover up for a past she doesn't
want to come to terms with... have her meet Akio, who dreams of
returning to his past self... the result could actually be quite
interesting.

And KK vs. G is another example of series incompatability... King Kong is
merely the size of a house, while Godzilla is the size of a skyscraper. The
solution? Just make Kong bigger... And the original screenplay was based on an
American script which had Kong fight Frankenstein - again, a major size
discrepancy... The solution? Have Victor von Frankenstein create a new Monster
out of parts of large animals, elephants, rhinos, hippos, etc.

Naive? Yes. Young? Not compared to most of the people he seduces (save
Mrs. Ohtori, I guess)... Mihoshi's got almost 10 years on Utena.
Theoretically, she's about the same age Akio at least _looks_ ...
unusual for him to persue... ^^

Yes, but in that scenario, I can't see it getting into much of a lemon
before everything goes crazy. You'd probably get some breasts flying
around and that's about it. Or he asks her to nibble on his ears...
before he realizes she has fangs...

Mihoshi: Just apply direct pressure, Mr. Akio!

Well, some of the Tenchi characters _are_ well over a thousand years
old and don't act anything near it. So there you are.

And come _on_... I'd say her mentality's at least that of a fifth
grader. No really... she's giggly and innocent. But a kindergartner
couldn't face down Kagato with a steely gaze and a (unfortunately
inneffectual) laser pistol.

Yeah, well, with Mihoshi, the breasts flying around _could_ have been
the cause of the damage...

You seen some of the new OAV3 art yet? (www.tenchiweb.com -- Japanese
site) There's this top-down shot of Mihoshi in that little pink tank
top *drool*

> >Or he asks her to nibble on his ears...

I have _yet_ to see Excel saga (plan on it, but haven't done it yet)
so I couldn't say.

Mihoshi's pointed canines are tiny but always there--it's not an
affectation of mood, as it can be with some anime characters. Every
member of her race has them, along with the elf-like ears.

I doubt, seriously, they could do much damage... except to say "I
doubt _insert innocuous word here_ could do much damage" when
Mihoshi's involved really has little meaning...

promise breasts will be flying in it, somewhere. ^^

Nope Mihoshi's fangs are REAL. Anthropomorphic Great Cats slowly evolving into
people almost indistinguishable from terrans... with the occasional throwback
like her boss's boss. ^^ Wouldn't put it past a fanfic to link Outlaw Star and
Tenchi just on the Mihoshi and Aisha Clan Clan being distant relatives from
different parts of space.

Of course, when talking about a crossover fanfic involving kendoist
samurai-wannabes, one must not forget the option of including Tatewaki Kuno.
Just picture the sparks if he fell for Anthy (in his amazingly superficial
manner) and started his usual antics...in front of Saionji.

Relatives? No, but I could buy the Ctarl-Ctarl being distant ancestors of
Mihoshi's race. They lost their vestigial fur, lost their tails, and were much
reduced in the ears, and lost the ability to transform.

Now that is a superb setup for a R1/2/Sku x-over! Two high-strung kendo freaks

That was also implied... but in FANFIC the more absurd the more likely to be
already written. So that's why I said relatives.

Don't have to explain anything I know both species. Not al;l have lost their
fur... not all have lost their tails. They seem to still be transitioning. They
even still have 2 different colored eyes still too. Though those could simply be
throwback traits.

Whee SF/SFan Biology @.@v

As for transforming who knows maybe Mihoshi's been to Henshin Dynamics ^-^

Ah, but don't let his role as comedic foil distract you from the fact that he
is,
in fact, very good at kendo. His ego may only fit in such structures as the
Tokyo Dome, but he's not bad at what he does at all...remember that he
does manage to get a serious hit on Ranma early on, which takes some doing.

That's

Haven't found it yet, but then I did spend the weekend in Cedar Rapids
getting tips on writing, learning stuff about cows, and watching a fansub
of "Full Metal Panic Fumoffu", which was just fabulous & sidesplitting.

Add Knowledge, lose Sanity, just the way I like it. ^^ I wonder if John Carter
of Mars is any relation to Randolph Carter? ^^ Randolph did make it to the moon
once, on the backs of some flying cats...

All I know about cows is that they're tippable. Hasn't Full Metal Panic been
released in the States?

I believe they're cast as uncle and nephew in that piece.

And don't forget the snipes. I think FMP just came out over here.

ADV has released the first season of FMP, which I have half of since Best Buy
had
them for $19.95 a pop, so they probably have the second season (which I'm
told "Fumoffu" is) licensed as well. First season isn't as funny as what I saw
of the
second season, but then I wasn't sleep-deprived when I watched the first season
at home. Well, not much, anyway...

Yes, that's right. The Uncle is a senior officer in the Cat Army and the nephew
is a new recruit. They help Randy out by annihilating some Toad People or
Night-Gaunts or something, I don't recall which...

It's something Bonta-kun (a large teddy-bear-lookin' mascot critter) says all
the time.
Who knows what it really means?

I never see the Prize Patrol, I only ever get the Doom Patrol...

If it's a teddy bear, it means "Downy sheets make things snuggly soft!"
