Purpose

The Terry Ortman FAQ is a Frequently-Asked-Questions document,
posted as a courtesy to provide some basic answers for those who
have questions about Terry Ortman's rabid ravings.
-
Who Is He

Terry Ortman, apparently also known as The Watcher, is the author of
a Traci Lords FAQ posted in alt.fan.traci-lords.

Some posters in the alt.fan.traci-lords group have offered a different
FAQ as being more representative and appropriate to the topic of
discussion in the group. This other alt.fan.traci-lords FAQ may be
found on the World Wide Web at the following URL:

http://dupasoi7.home.mindspring.com/aft-l/faq.htm

It should be noted that this is no more official than the Terry Ortman
version of the FAQ. Which FAQ is more useful and answers more questions
is left as a research exercise for the reader.
-
What Does He Claim

Terry has been seen to claim himself as being the "APPOINTED FAQ
MAINTAINER for the Traci Lords newsgroups". Further, Terry appears
to feel that this conveys administrative privileges, such as the
ability to forbid the posting of certain topics or forbidding certain
users from posting.
-
What Really Is

A FAQ is a Frequently Asked Questions document. The purpose of a FAQ
is to answer questions that new users in a group may have that relate
to the group.

Any individual may post a FAQ. A good FAQ will actually address one
or more topics or questions that frequently appear in the group. There
is nothing special about a FAQ. It is a post like any other. FAQ
maintainers are self-appointed.

A newsgroup charter may list guidelines for the operation of a newsgroup,
including topical guidelines and other administrative policies. Such a
charter must be posted as part of the newsgroup creation procedure. The
Usenet group "alt.fan.traci-lords" does not have such a charter, and
therefore does not have any such content rules.

A moderated newsgroup may have a moderator that controls and directs the
content in the newsgroup. "alt.fan.traci-lords" is not a moderated
newsgroup. Terry Ortman is most certainly not the moderator.

It should therefore be obvious that Terry Ortman has no special role in
the administration of the Usenet newsgroup alt.fan.traci-lords, and in
particular that Terry Ortman has no authority to prohibit any topics or
users from posting in this Usenet newsgroup.

A DejaNews search for "Terry Ortman" can provide entertainment for an
entire afternoon.
