well, I'll tell you my story .....

The first Tom Robbins book I ever saw was Still Life With Woodpecker -
my sisters friend had lent it to her, but she hadn't read it yet. I
thought it looked kind of neat, but didn't really look at it closely
(even though I was a huge bookworm - go figure, I must have been
mightily distracted that day, but I still remember exactly where in
her room it was sitting). Then ages later it seemed, I was browing
at a bookstore by my house (I was in high school and really bored with
the stuff we were reading in school) looking for something new. I
landed up talking with the store manager and she suggested that I try
Even Cowgirls Get the Blues. I remembered the authors name and
picked it up .... and feel completely in love with it! Even though I
love to read, there haven't been that many books that I can say I
immediately and completely fell in love with (except for Harriet The
Spy and On The Road) I read it from cover to cover and was
desperate to read more! I immediately bought Still Life With
Woodpecker, loved it and then picked up Another Roadside Attraction
and loved it. Then, by a strange coincidence, a few months later I
landed up working at the same bookstore, hired by the same manager
that recommended the book to me! By that point I had devoured all
his books and was desperate for more. I was actually pretty lucky
because I got to read three amazing books right away - then I was
stuck for months waiting for a new one! Torture! (it still is
torture!) I used to scan the upcoming book release lists for a new
Tom Robbins book. Then one day there it was on the list - Jitterbug
Perfume! I actually landed up being in England when the book came
out, bought it, read it while I travelled and LOVED it. Those were
the golden months.

Now to race forward to the present day - as much as I love reading his
stuff, Skinny Legs and Frog Pajamas haven't made me feel the same way
Jitterbug, Cowgirls, Still Life and Roadside made me feel. I find I
still go back to these books to re-read, when I haven't felt compelled
to do with Skinny Legs and Frog Pajamas. But, while I bid my time
waiting for another book to come out, when I'm in used book stores I
always check out the "R" section to see if I can find first editions
or different editions of any of his stuff.

And that's my story! (hope it wasn't too boring!)

By the way - anyone out there know if another book's on the way and
when???

Peggy

That's a great story, Peggy. According to the interview Ooola did, Tom
isn't yet working on a new novel.
