Did Han Solo really shoot Greedo first in ANH?

Hello,

I am watching Star Wars: A New Hope (Special Edition) with my friends and my
favorite scene is the one where Han Solo is confronted by Greedo in the
cantina. I find it really cool the way Han is able to remain calm as Greedo
shoots first and they Han coolly fires back with a shot of his own, felling
him.

One of my friends claims to have watched Star Wars: A New Hope when he was
younger 10 years ago with his brother and that he distinctly remembers Han
shooting first after saying "I bet you have...". I highly doubt this as it
completely makes Han Solo's character much worse. In fact, it makes him
some kind of vile anti-hero.

If this is the case (though I doubt this), I much prefer the Star Wars: A
New Hope (Special Edition) version of this scene by the sounds of it. I am
glad that George Lucas corrected this abomination as it has no place in a
classic film series such as Star Wars. I think that anyone who would prefer
the old scene is akin to someone who hates the brilliant character of Jar
Jar Binks.

However, I have seen the original "Empire Strikes Back" and I must say that
ESB: SE is far superior. I especially enjoyed the part where Luke is
screaming for his life in SE instead of falling silently in the original.
The latter makes Luke look like a reactionary, right-wing blowhard (strong,
silent type) while the former makes him seem more realistic, not afraid to
express his fear and emotions.

With the changes in the SE, I think they have made Star Wars more
politically correct in order to prepare audiences for George Lucas's
greatest masterpiece thus far, "The Phantom Menace". True Star Wars fans
will agree that TPM far surpasses the original trilogy (ANH, ESB and ROTJ)
although TPM is only slightly better than ROTJ. However, some cynical
so-called Star Wars fans have attacked this superior film and have abandoned
the SW franchise. These are traitors to the vision of George Lucas.

I think that these so-called fans are what I would classify as "Han
Solo/Boba Fett/Darth Maul" fans. These idiots prefer the darker side of
Star Wars instead of its more positive and more politically correct side
(Jar Jar Binks, Ewoks et al).

Now to get a few things off of my chest. I'm sick and tired of you racist
homophobes who don't like Jar Jar Binks. Star Wars is about poltical
correctness, diverisity and multiculturalism, and if you got a problem with
that: sod off you stupid wanker! You deserve to be branded and imprisoned
because you are a hate speech criminal. Jar Jar haters are no better than
the "forces of darkness" that the visionary Lucas has spoken out against.

I have a question for you Jar Jar haters: if everyone hates Jar Jar so much
then how come TPM is the highest grossing Star Wars movie of all time? Can
millions of true Star Wars fans be wrong?

The truth is Jar Jar Binks and TPM make ANH and ESB look like shit, OK? Jar
Jar is a much more interesting and more inclusive character than that
mysoginist
Han Solo. His fans are typical male chauvinist anti-choice pigs who voted
for the right-wing racist cowboy George Bush. If you don't like Jar Jar
then you are not a true Star Wars fan. Racists like you deserve to be
stripped of your civil rights. I believe in freedom of speech but hate
speech like this should be banned and its practicioners should be imprisoned
for life.

VOTE DEMOCRAT IN 2002!

The scream you hear Luke when he gets beaten by Darth Vader and falls, is
that of the scream you hear in Return Of The Jedi from The Emperor. It's
the same sound effect, only inserted in to Luke's situation. That really
pissed me off when I heard that.
I also hated the fact that the music in ROTJ was changed in Jabbas' palace.
I liked Lapti Nek alot better than the new song with the new character.

Your friend is right. Greedo never got a shot off. I never understood why GL
had to go back and make it all PC. I mean either way you look at it, it was
self-defense on Han's part. Greedo had no intention of letting Han get out of
there alive. His sole motivation was to bag Solo for the fame anf fortune
involved in accomplishing such a feat. Too bad for him that Han was faster and
more cunning on the draw.
Anti-hero? Not at all. Look at Greedo's motives/actions. It was clearly an act
of self-preservation and defense on Han's part. Besides, the way they redid
that scene make the whole scene look really cheesey!

All in the name of being politically correct. The SE scene was terrible. It was
perfect just the way it was the first time around. What would you know what
belongs in Star Wars? From what you have stated, you appear to be a second
generation fan of the OT, whereas I am the first generation fan. Meaning I grew
up on the OT, I saw them in their original formats. There was nothing wrong
with them before. Ok, maybe the clock scenes in ANH, but other than that,
nothing wrong at all.

I think making them more PC was based on the idea that our society has shifted
that way and he doesn't want to upset the masses. But I say, who cares? Are we
going to go back and change everything that was made pre-PC era just so that we
don't offend everyone? I think not. I think that great masterpieces should just
be left alone as they are, unaltered.
Ever hear of the phrase, "you can't duplicate perfection"? Well I think it
applied here.

Really? I was always a Luke Skywalker fan, a far cry from the dark side. And I
prefer the OT, for the most part in the original form. PC is a crock of crap.
PC is for the fools of the world who don't want to acknowledge the world for
what it truly is: a very dark place and humanity is in the middle of one giant
cesspool.

Star Wars is nothing about being PC, never has been and never will be. It has
always been a simple Space Opera. That's it. You are reading way too much into
a simple story.

You make it sound like he carried the whole of the film rather than the film
actually having some good content all on its own. Now I am no Jar Jar hater,
but I don't think he soley made the movie a success. He just had a very small
part in it.

>

Why, because there is more current special effects attached to the film?
Comparing apples to oranges in that respect. The technology has changed over
the last 27 years. Of course technologically speaking, TPM is going to make ANH
and ESB look second rate. But to say that it is shit? You are so woefully
messed up.

I can see that you are politically driven here. So what does real life politics
have anything to do with Star Wars? Answer: Nothing. You have just proved
yourself an idiot. Who are you to question the status of fandom of anyone
around here? Growing up I was always annoyed by Han Solo and he's one of the
best kick ass characters in the story. Does that make me any less of a Star
Wars fan? No.
George Bush a right-wing racist? That's a good one. Think of this crap all by
yourself? Are you even a citizen of this country or some idiot from foreign
lands blowing smoke because you don't like the way this country is being run.
The fact of the matter is we finally have a President who is thinking of his
countrymen first instead of his own political agendas. He has offered hope to a
country that was devastated last September. He is doing all he can to secure
peace in this cesspool of a world that we live in. Bush is far from being a
racist. He is a humanitarian!
So if you believe in the censorship of hate speech then you yourself should be
censored, right? Do us all a favor and shut up. You are an annoying troll!

Cinema tickets were cheaper in 1977, so if the same number of people went

Not only is the sound effect the same, but it was also used in pretty much

Why does this make Han Solo vile, or a jerk? I think it shows sound
tactical sense.

Think about it -- there's a guy sitting across from you, pointing a
gun at you, who's just told you "That's the idea. I've been looking
forward to this for a long time ..." -- leaving no doubt from context
that he's about to kill you with his gun.

You:

A. Let him take the first shot, and pray that he'll miss from a range
of FIVE FEET -- a range so short a wall-eyed baboon couldn't miss.

B. Recognize that he's going to shoot, so SHOOT FIRST. Granted
there's still a possibility he'll pull the trigger by reflex, but
you've a better chance of survival then if you just sit there saying
"take your best shot".

Second Law of Gunfighting -- he who shoots first usually wins.

So, IMO Solo made the correct call in the first movie, and detracts
neither from his character nor from his tactical ability. The SE
version makes him look like an idiot. Yeah, so Greedo missed -- but
that miss was so lucky it had to be director's intervention. Both the
miss and the second shot made the whole scene much less believable as
far as I was concerned.

For the most part yes. However, I hate the changes at the end of the
movie. The way they added the "shuttle going back to the SSD", how they
changed what Vader said and how the music changes so abruptly at times..
Those changes don't fit very well into the surrounding scenes.

Political thread ... (why are the Jedi ghosts telling me to move along,
move along?)

Maybe we really need to practice a bit of "All I ever needed to know I
learned from Star Wars."

ESB :: Lando :: "I had no choice, they arrived before you did."

Right. Whatever. At least Lando tried to make things better. There is
a real-life leason there.

As for dealing with your bounty, it seems you can:

(1) Carbon Freeze,
(2) Disintergrate,
(3) Catch them in a net and barbeque them later ...

etc.

I'm a hell of a lot less certain that people don't have choices.

The poster is correct -- the first rule of gunfighting is:

1. Bring a *gun* to a gunfight.

Corrollary: Do not bring a knife to a gunfight. Do not bring your
three black belts in Aikido, Karate, and Jujitsu to a gunfight. Do
not bring a piece of paper proclaiming "peace in our time" to a
gunfight. Bring -- a -- GUN!!

For those who are interested, there are a couple different Rules of
Gunfighting on the web, including
http://www.joeislove.com/article.asp?id=67 , which doesn't have MY
rule #2 but pretty good, nonetheless.

One of my favorite scenes in any classic Western is in El Dorado. Cole
(John Wayne) takes on as sidekick a kid named "Mississippi" (a young James
Caan). The kid carries knives, as he can't shoot to save his life. Cole
stops at a local gunsmith's shop and gets the kid a shotgun, with a
diabolical history and a stock and barrel so sawed off they almost aren't
there any more. Once Cole and Mississippi get out in the desert, they try
it out. The kid aims it at a cactus a few feet away and pulls the
trigger. The cactus is *obliterated*. The Duke grins and rides off
chortling, "Well ya can't miss with that!"

Well we were at war with the country that was giving him free sanctuary. The
fact that there is a new government in place in that country helps little in
finding the man responsible for the attack on this country. But then again this
new government is supporting our cause in blowing the shit out of the hills
where bin Laden is reported to be hiding out in. Of course they would, we are
ridding them of their enemies in the process. I would think that appealing to
the nations in requesting that they not support this man was a necessary and
peaceful step on his part. Those that chose not to adhere to our request
obviously drew sides in this conflict. They are now the enemy.

Not directed to the above, but in general:

I find it interesting that a thread about Han shooting Greedo turns into
a discussion about humanitarians / bombing Afghanistan in response to
Sep. 11, 2001 / the U.S. President.

While I've found it interesting who on this list thinks humanitarians
bomb people (frightening too), there is a bit of difference between
shooting somebody with a gun pointed up your nostril -vs- say using the
Death Star to take out a planet 'cause you found a terrorist who lived
on that planet and who had stolen some secret plans.

In other words, I'd be curious to see those of you continuing this
debate to bring the topic back to a common ground (aka Star Wars).

Holy crap on a stick, I live in The Empire? I've always had a hunch Bush Jr.

Republic.

Actually, if there is a bright center in the US, you're probably in the
state that is furtherest from it. :p

Naturally it follows that somebody like Lucas would keep revisiting the
same damn place over and over again, hence the celebration.

I thought the first rule was Bring a Gun.
The second rule is to put a iron plate under your pancho and dare your

You're close. Look up Rio Bravo. Same movie, different actors except for
the Duke, and the kid is called Colorado. In El Dorado, the drunk sherrif
is played by Robert Mitchum.

Unfortunately though, way too many of them rehashed the "stampede the cattle
