Heard that the other day!!
I'm kinda curious now, kicked around a few names of who SHOULD be and who
probably is for various reasons.

Gotta think it's a recent one like Madonna, or Mariah due to the fact of
huge exposure and more population to scoop them up!

As much as I love Shania, find it hard to believe she outsold either of
these two, with only 3 "official" releases!!

Throw someone like Aretha Franklin into to mix with 50+ releases over 40+?
years, and ya gotta start wondering who's doing the counting?

Anyone have a "good" source for the records? Think I heard this blurb on ET
the other night!

BZZZZZT!!

Wrong answer! Alanis _was+ the highest-selling female artist for a single
album, for _Jagged Little Pill_. This was recently surpassed by Shania's
_Come On Over_.

I gotta think that the one that's still ahead of her has to be someone with
quite a few albums out, not just 3 as both Alanis and Shania are at (and
Alanis's third is a live EP.)

These figures only represent US sales and not international. However,
Shania's 28 million is very impressive because it only represents 3 cds:
"COO" at 16 million,
"TWIM" at 11 million and "ST" at one million. "COO" is the best selling
cd by a female artist ever. True, Alanis Morissette's "JLP" has sold 16
million but it's probably already been passed up by
"COO" which is still selling well at the present time. Just a matter of
time until it hits 17 million.

Thanks Edward!
These # 's seem a lot more in-line with what I thought with a couple of
surprises. Would still like to see some accurate Int'l stats! Might even out
a couple of those surprises. Anyone?

No problem there!
What we (I) am looking for are legitimate stats for "ALL - Time FEMALE"
record\disc sales!!

Again, as much as I luv the lady! Don't think she is the #2 ALL-Time sales
Leader! (as quoted in the original post)

Edward, already supplied some North American Stats, Looking for WORLDWIDE
#'s if any one has a link, would be grateful!

Thanx again,

I believe the answer is Britney Spears (despite her being a new-comer).

So she did finally break the mark?? Where was the 21 or Millionaire
style confetti that should've fallen all over the Shania-scape at the
record achievement??

(Or, should I say, the double record, because then she would've broken
Garth's country record as well...)

You cannot quote a satistic without qualifying it.

The highest selling artist for a single CD (Jagged little pill - 16
million)

Come on over 15 million was the last figure I saw - about a month ago, so it
may by now have reached 16+ in which case would be number 1.

Shania is the only Female singer to sell 10 million back to back - Woman in
me and Come on over. She has also broken all sort of records for the
Female/Country categories.

It is possible that other singers eg Madonna have sold more as a total but
when people refer to Shania it is relating to a single CD.

So everyone is probably correct. :-)

If you want to start another (related) topic here's 2 questions to start -

Which CD album has had the most singles released from it ?
Will every track on Come on over eventually be released as a single ?

She was certified 16 Million almost immediately after the release of
the International version of COO in the states. Many thought it a bit
of inflation of numbers, and they may have been proven correct -- there
has probably been a nice bump in sales, but not enough to get 17 X
platinum, and break the genre and gender records.

Agreed. And the expectations will be so high for her next one.

Easy, COO. I think a Janet album had 8 singles, but COO has had 10.

I think it's run it's course.
