James is pretty much as he appears to be, so "I" don't see where
Bullock would have gotten that idea. However, this approach would
unleash her fatal weakness.
Bullock favorite type has always been the 'bad-boy'. Nothing wrong
with that... bad boys need girlfriends and their girlfriends need
bad-boys. But Bullock is a reformer. When she couldn't transform her
past boyfriends from badness, she'd drop them and find a new bad-boy.
Reforming bad-boys is usually an exercise in futility, since they
usually change only when they want to (eg. when they're plumb wore
out). "I" know this because almost everyone I've worked with for the
last 8 years is a bad-or-former-bad boy. I'll bet even those close to
her are wondering what's going on here. Why would she suddenly keep
an unreformed bad-boy?
"I" think the answer is surprisingly simple. At first, Bullock
thought James was much worse than he is. After a time, she found he
was less bad. This is the same path a reformed bad boy would take:
from bad to less bad. So, in a way, James has reformed. He was still
the same guy, but much more importantly, he was much better than he
had appeared to be to Bullock just a few months previously.
Since James was "reformed" (he was no longer a !KILLER!), he became
suitable marriage material to Bullock. This was, after all, the only
bad-boy she ever knew that got so much better (turning from !KILLER!
into what he always was and probably always will be).
And it seems to be working for her. She's found the reformed bad boy
she's always wanted and he's found the woman who'll never ask him to
reform.
