Farewell Tokyopop Magazine (10/27/2000)
Tokyopop Magazine (Foremerly Mixxzine) will cease it's publication run
as of
its November issue which will ship in a week to ten days. "We still
believe
in the magazine's potential" comments Matthew Galgani, director of
editorial
for Tokyopop, "but the investment capital is missing to make it the
success
that is could be". According to Matthew the Tokyopop.com website will
become
the new focus for much of the content that was in the magazine, "The
content
won't change, just the medium on which it is presented."
The decision to discontinue the magazine is in part owed to Tokyopop /
Mixx
Entertainment's recent diversification into areas other than
publication. In
addition to Tokyopop's publication arm they have recently moved into the
home video market and are expecting to ship their first DVDs in the next
few
months (no product announcements have yet been made) as well as the
soundtrack market and several other areas. As a result of their focus on
other aspects of Japanese Entertainment some decisions obviously had to
be
made, and the discontinuation of Tokyopop as a Magazine was obviously
one.
Tokyopop/Mixxzine's 3 year history has not been without the occasional
controversy, particularly the way they handled the original
diversification
into to seperate Magazines (Smile and Mixxzine at the time), however in
the
time since, while Tokyopop will be discontinued, Smile Magazine has come
into it's own as a relatively successful Magazine.
Tokyopop "members" will be informed via e-mail this weekend of the
decision
to discontinue the Magazine. Mathew asked us to pass on one last piece
of
information to readers of Tokyopop Magazine who are reading this, "Thank
you
for your support over the past 25 issues."

now now, if all the stupid people are gone, then where shall my amusement
be? ;) personally, i'd like to see Mixx bite the dust and then have all their
liscenced manga picked up by Capable translators and rereleased and
continued ^_^

It's come full circle, and I'm happy.
Mixxzine (later renamed to Tokyopop) started out as an all manga magazine and
then changed to just another modern pop mag with kewl reviews, interviews and
stories. Whatever uniqueness it had was totally lost.
Smile started out that way and then changed format to all manga. If you
haven't checked it, please do. It is ALL manga and has some great stories.
Many folks have slammed Mixxzine because they lost their focus and carried out
some rather murky deals, like making distasteful changes AFTER the renewals
came in. However, they have actually done a decent job with the translations.

O_o;;; Good grief... has the Pink Spore clouded your mind already that much?
Especially their "translations" always were the *utmost* bullshit! Actually,
calling them "translations" in the first place is just plain *wrong*, since thy
often nothing had in common with the original. So their adaptions were one of
the most horrible things in their manga, together with their extremely crappy
retouch work and their awful fonts.
I *really* hope Mixx croaks very soon, and some othjer company picks it up -
preferably one which has actual translators and not teletubbies on drugs (those
Mixx guys are all teletubbies on drugs, anyway).

IT'S PARTYTIME! EXCELLENT! ^__^
Tenchi, have you actually _read_ any of the Mixxzine translated Sailor Moon?
I've really only heard two complaints. The expressions have been Westernized
to some extent (Bunny says "I want Pringles" instead of "I want pudding") and
the translators were not sharp enough to recognize a poem by Yates written in
Japanese. So they translated it back into English rather then simply restoring
the original poem. I've been reading all their Sailor Moon. None of storyline
has been softened or altered that I can tell. If anyone has examples to the
contrary, I'd like to hear it. The same goes for the rest of their manga.

Except that's not going to happen. Mixx is doing _exactly_ what many of the
users on this newsgroup have been begging for. Shoujo manga. So they call it
Chix Comix? So what? The content is real and actually quite excellent. Sailor
Moon, Card Captor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, all great stuff. The Smile
magazine has dropped the kewl format and is now a pure shoujo anthology; SMSS,
Peach Girl (which is exceptional) and many others.
The Tokyopop magazine was a stinker and I'm glad they are dropping it. That
means they have in effect returned to their roots. All they have is manga now,
no reviews, no editorials, no more sideways formats. I think it's a great step
in the right direction and I wish them luck.
