Well, I'm hardly a fanartist (but I drew my character's Morphin'
Ol' Broom ^_^) but I think they do. I know I used Paintshop Pro 5 to do a
few clean ups after scanning it in.
Ah what the heck, what's the harm in plugging some MUN resources
ne? ^_^ As a MUN student, Ryan, you have access to the MicroComputer
Workstation Resource Center in the Henrietta Harvey building. (MWRC) Lots
of stuff to use there. ^_^ Basically a graphics/printing/special lab that
offers stuff not in the other labs. The only thing that costs money there
seems to be sending something to one of the printers. ^_^

Well I use PSP 5, which I just absolutely LOVE, to touch up stuff. And
sometimes when I'm REALLY bored, do things from scratch. Though I admit I
still haven't figured this 'layers' thing out yet....
And I REALLY had to use it to fix the Cast Portrait since there were
mistakes I wanted to fix and places where it ALMOST but not quite lined up
(since it was on two seperate sheets). So, I really use my CG program lots.

i also use Adobe Photoshop (it came /w the scanner). it has this nifty "instant
fix" button that usually fixes things that're all-around too dark & stuff like
that.
Tokoz ;)
The following picture was a scanned black and white pencil sketch
colored in with Paintshop Pro 3.0, although the "Publishing" letters at
the bottom were added in the same program later:
http://www.strangepaths.com/pookpub.gif
I just used the fountain-fill tool (the one that looks like a bucket)
and then zoomed in and fixed little inconsistencies (making sure to use
the eyedropper-tool to color-match first) with the paintbrush tool
(making sure to set the width of the tool to 1.) A handy tool for
shading is the Airbrush tool (looks like a weird squiry pen in 3.0, a
spray can in 5.0) set to a fairly low opacity, like 20% does the trick.
Paint Shop Pro 5.0 also does most things much better than 3.0, I've
found, if you can manage to get a copy of it :)

IMO, Painshop Pro and Adobe Photoshop do an equally good job. AS just has more
bells and whistles.
(they're FUN bells and whistles though ;)
All my CG colouring is done using the Magic Wand select tool. It lets me airbrush
highlights onto a specific area without mucking up stuff around it. Then there's
the old Flood Fill (the bucket) and airbrush. Don'tforget you can adjust the
tolerance so that you can get a neater fill and clean up all the greyscale
anti-aliasing that happens when you scan the drawing.
Take as an example the 'Magic Club' pic on my page
http:www.backmeup.net.au/~mimi/ow.htm
The clouds are freehand airbrush, as is Mimi's hair. The rest is 90% Magic Wand
and various gradient fills.
But you'll get that with any paint program. It often takes a while to learn
exactly how to use the tools to get results you like.
99% of it is experimentation and surprise discovery.

Adobe Photoshop? Oh, gross ^_^;; I tried it once (the 4.0 version), and I can
only say it's an absolute piece of crap! :(
If you want a really good image editor, I can recommend Micrografx's Picture
Publisher 7. I'm very content with it ^_^ It can do alot of things that dumb
Photoshop can't, and it's also way more user-friendly.
I dunno about version 8 of it which is already out, but it's probably even
better... I'll get it whenever I get the chance.

Just a waste of time and money... don't get yourself that AS crap! ^_^;; If you
want a *really* good image editor who is far superior to it, get yourself
Micrografx's Picture Publisher 7 or 8. ^_^

<eyebrow disappears into hairline>...you know, there are *nicer* ways to put
an opinion forward. "I prefer MPP7" would have sufficed rather than trashing
my choice of software when I have only used AS for a little while, but picked
it up VERY fast and got results I was happy with. You may as well be a
watercolour artist telling Rembrandt that oil paints are crap. (and no I'm
not Rembrandt by ANY stretch of the imagination, so put the barbs away..)

Right, you could beat her about the head with the Big Sarcastic Stick.
^_^

Very nice results, too, I must say. She was doing some art for a
project of mine with amazing speed *and* phenominal quality. I know
precious little about paint programs, but juding from Amy's ability to
use them, Adobe Photoshop works for me. And if it looks good in end and
you like the way you got those results, then near as I can tell, that's
all that matters.

Amy always turns out fabulous work. But I'm afraid I must somewhat agree with
the Hostile One that I don't really like Adobe Photoshop too well. <shrug> But
only for the reason that it's too hard to figure out for us stupid people. I'm
not gonna go around calling AS a piece of crap just because I happen to be too
dumb to figure out how to use it. <shrug>

Yes, it's quite nifty indeed ^_^ It's even §þ΃ƒÿ, I'd say <bg>

You only used it for a little while? ^_^ Well, perhaps there's still hope for
you. ^_-

Yes, her art is quite nice indeed... I only think that she could still do
better if she had a halfway decent paint program, or even much better if she had
a really good one, like Picture Publisher 7 or 8.
>Amy always turns out fabulous work. But I'm afraid I must somewhat agree with

See? Someone else who has seen the light! ^_^
><shrug> But

>not gonna go around calling AS a piece of crap just because I happen to be too

Speak for yourself, dear... With me, it's just because I doesn't want to waste
my time. Yes, I openly admit it - I used AS myself sometime ago ^_^;; Back then,
I had no idea which paint program would be best, I just wanted one that could do
more than Paintshop Pro 4 which I used before. So I thought, "Why not try AS 4?
It seems to be quite popular..." I needed quite some time to learn how to use
it, but there was a lot that irked me, and after all the time I had inveszed I
wasn't too content with my results.
Sometime then, when I cursed once again about the many deficiencies of AS, I
decided to go and look for something better. First I though of Corel, but then a
friend of mine told me, I should try Picture Publisher 7 and went on about how
great it was. I thought, "Ok, let's give it a try... Can't be worse than this AS
stuff." When I tried it out, I noticed that it took me much less time to learn
how to use it, and that it was even quite userfriendly - something that AS was
completely lacking. After a short time already, I got much better results
already than I ever got with AS in all the time I had used it. When further
working with PP7, I finally realized what a piece of crap AS was compared to it,
and from there, I never touched AS again. Since then I've been very content all
along with it ^_^
So, I think that was long enough now... why don't you go and find out for
yourselves? You can d/l a FREE trial of Picture Publisher from Micrografx's site
at http://www.micrografx.com ^_^ Just try it out and see if it works out for you
- after all, it's free, so you don't have anything to lose there, and I'm sure
you won't be sorry for it. If you like it, you can get yourself the full version
rather cheap, or if you invest a little more, you can even get the new version 8
of Picture Publisher ^_^
(And no, I don't get paid by them for this.)
>> > I'll use what I like, sue me :P

If you insist... <takes out cell phone and dials up a lawyer> Just a minute...
