A Page from Ami's Diary...
I am weary tonight. I've spent hours reading. As usual, I'm trying to stay
ahead in all of my classes. Sometimes I wonder why I drive myself as if I
am behind when I am not. But, I always have done it this way and there
have been times when it really paid off. Objectively, I must admit there
have been even more times when it did not matter. Even so, I cannot forget
that a bad grade could undo a lot of my hard work if I allow myself to
relax. So, I push myself. It's my own private competition.
The other girls look foward to the day when they can put schoolwork behind
them. But I have many years of school ahead of me. After I complete my
formal education it will be vital that I keep myself current by reading
medical publications and attending conferences. For me, studying will
never end. I explained that to Usagi. I told her that I thought constantly
learning new things was essential in keeping the mind alert and productive
over a lifetime. I'm not sure if she agrees with me, but she did grasp
that this is what I believe and that it's important to me.
There have been times I've wondered if there was anything to me except Ami
the Brain or Studying Ami. I've come to accept that I am those things and
that is not wrong. Using my intellect is something I need to do in order
to create the life I want for myself and fufill the promise of a good
mind.
I've come to terms with this, but I've also accepted that I cannot allow
myself to hide behind my studies or those labels. There is a world to
experience and it is best experienced first hand. I learned that the hard
way.
An incident I feel was a turning point occurred recently. Michiru, an
excellent swimmer, challenged me to a race. On a typical day for me, I may
have reacted differently than I did that day. But, if I had all I would've
gotten out of the experience would have been some exercise. That
particular day I was out of sorts and I felt confused about how to respond
to the situation, so I let her win.
She became somewhat cool toward me about this and I did not understand
why. I was hurt. I'd only wanted to be her friend. Then I learned that her
friendship was not dependent on whether or not she won or lost. She has
enough confidence in her own abilities that she wanted to compete at the
top of her form against another swimmer who was going all out to win. The
important thing, I learned, was to give everything my best and not to be
ashamed if I do well.
It is very logical. If I were a weak swimmer and swam my best would I be
ashamed because someone else was faster? I don't think I would be. So why
should I worry if strong swimming allows me to be the victor? There is no
reason other than a cultural construct that says that might be "showing
off." If I purposely arranged a match with a poor swimmer, perhaps that
would be what I was doing. But, I knew before I started that Michiru was a
very fast swimmer.
I don't mind giving my all academically, but I think I might have been
holding back in other aspects of my life. If not for this simple swimming
race, I would not have learned the lessons that I have been able to apply
to some of the very issues that have been bothering me.
I also learned that people strong in spirit and self confidence want to
see you do well and will like you more, not less, for it. I realized my
friends were like this. They never asked me to slow to their pace. Instead
they value my intelligence and praise my ability to do well in school as
well as think strategically under stress.
It's interesting how a small incident can be so enlightening. But our
lives are built of these small moments of learning and realization. So
often our "teachers" don't intend to teach us anything at all. They just
do. I think this must be what people mean when they refer to "the school
of life."
It is nice to steal a few moments to reflect, but now it's time to get
back to work. Perhaps I'll just curl up with my history book and read
myself to sleep.

(Haruka asking Usagi about sacrificing someone in order to save others)
Usagi-Even though you can justify it, what about those being sacrificed?
Can we simply forget about those making the sacrifice?
I can't save myself and ignore those who are suffering.
It may be hard by yourself, but I'm sure you'll find......
a better way without sacrifices. If we get together,
I'm certain!
Michiru: Usagi, you're so sweet...

A good choice for Ami's entry. One of the few episodes that show her
interest in anything but the academic. Here is yet another clear
vision into what motivates the senshi that we love so much. Keep it
